Volkswagen’s new Tayron large SUV opens for orders in the UK this week, complete with ICE and PHEV powertrains and five- or seven-seat versions.

Priced from £39,850, the newcomer sits between the Tiguan and Touareg in the Volkswagen line-up, delivering a successor to the Tiguan Allspace and competing with rivals such as the Peugeot 5008 and the closely related Škoda Kodiaq.

Government research into the enablers and barriers that commercial fleet operators and drivers face in adopting electric vans is now out.

The report on ‘EV adoption and smart charging for electric vans and commercial fleets’ was carried out by transport consultancy and research firm TRL for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) prior to the UK general election in July 2024.

The new car market rose 2.6% in 2024 while EV uptake surged thanks to record fleet uptake.

New car registrations reached 1.953 million last year, up nearly 50,000 on 2023, while battery electric cars (BEVs) took a record annual volume and market share at 19.6%. The full-year growth follows a flat December that saw 140,786 units registered, marking a marginal 0.2% decline.

Fuel prices rose for the third month in a row in December, but remain close to late 2019 levels, new RAC data shows.

Petrol finished 2024 at an average of 136.9p across the UK, up a third of a pence (0.36p), while diesel rose two-thirds of a pence (0.67p) to 142.9p. Petrol has increased from 135p at the start of October and diesel from 139.5p, according to the RAC Fuel Watch.

A rise in road surface dressing volumes for the first time in 12 years marks “green shoots of recovery” for the UK’s pothole-ridden roads.

The Road Emulsion Association (REA) has reported an increase in the manufacturing, sale and use of bitumen emulsions for surface dressing since last year, which was the lowest reported volumes on record.

Initial charges for the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels have been confirmed after the Transport for London (TfL) board signed off on proposals.

The tolls will come into effect when the new Silvertown crossing opens in the spring and are required as part of the development consent for the new tunnel.

More than 14,000 drivers are expected to call out the AA on Miserable Monday (6 January) in one of the busiest days of 2025 for car breakdowns.

Flexible rental firm Liquid Fleet has reported a 12.5% rise in the number of probationary rentals over the six months from June to November.

Osprey expanded its charging network with more than 300 rapid and ultra-rapid charging bays in 2024.

The new additions took the total number of charging bays in Osprey’s network to over 1,300. This includes 27 all-new ultra-rapid charging hubs, where the majority of the new charge points are located in line with a growing driver preference for charging hubs.

Used car average values fell in December but the outlook for January and beyond is optimistic, Cap HPI has reported.

December average values dropped 1.5% or some £260 in the three-year-old, 60,000-mile bracket. Across this demographic, approximately 60% of cars fell in value, 35% remained stable and 5% saw an increase.

National charging network Be.EV is installing three ultra-rapid charging hubs in Northumberland in a bid to drive sustainable tourism.
