🌍 Chants to Cool the Earth: A Global Broadcast 🌍

Join us on October 21st for Chants to Cool the Earth, part of the Sounding Planetary Futures series by UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab. Featuring Guarani & Kaiowá Indigenous shamans from Brazil and electronic music legends A Guy Called Gerald , Matt Black Tune, and 'Youth' Glover, this global broadcast merges Indigenous rituals with cutting-edge sound technology.

The Guarani & Kaiowá believe their sacred "chants to cool the earth" can help restore ecological balance, and by broadcasting globally, we amplify their voices and ancient knowledge.

This broadcast builds on a four-year collaboration between UCL MAL, the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS), and the Guarani & Kaiowá Indigenous communities. Together, we’ve blended traditional wisdom with innovative technologies to rethink how we approach ecology, sustainability, and cultural heritage.

We extend our gratitude to the British Museum 's Endangered Material Knowledge Programme, UCL Knowledge Exchange and Innovation, UCL Grand Challenges, UCL Global Engagement, Hill Fernandes, and others who have made this possible.

Multimedia Anthropology Lab (MAL)

The UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab (MAL) is a student-led research network aimed at developing innovative methods for anthropological practice. In a world where new technologies offer new ways to gather data and present research, MAL experiments with mediums such as sound, film, VR/360 video, graphic novels, drawing, sculpture, and installations to explore how they can contribute towards alternative forms of anthropological thinking. If anthropology is to remain relevant today we must develop new forms of practice which can dialogue with more diverse audiences, collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, and disrupt existing models of thought.
