On 5 September 1940, Luftwaffe fighter ace Oberleutnant Franz von Werra was shot down over Winchet Hill, Kent. Franz von Werra holds the distinction of being the only German prisoner of war to have escaped British-Canadian custody and to have returned to N**i Germany.

An incredibly charismatic, inventive and self-confident man, von Werra was 'the one who got away'. This remark became the basis for James Leasor's best-selling book, 'The One that Got Away', which tells the full and exciting story of von Werra's two daring escape attempts in England, and his third and successful bid for freedom: a leap from the window of a prisoners' train in Canada.

Enduring snow and frostbite, he eventually crossed into the then neutral United States. On returning to the Third Reich, via Mexico, South America and Spain, von Werra rejoined the Luftwaffe and continued to fly. Yet on 25 October 1941, von Werra was killed when his ME 109 fighter crashed into the North Sea owing to engine failure.

The book is based on von Werra's own dictated account of his adventure coupled with first-hand accounts from many of those involved. It makes for a compelling read.

First published in 1953, it was probably the first book about WWII to give an objective and fair view to both sides and, as such, was an immediate sensation. It was later turned into a 1956 film, with actor Hardy Kruger starring as von Werra.

'The One that Got Away' is available from Chiselbury (address in bio), Amazon and all decent bookshops

Today is the 79th anniversary of VJ-Day.

Always overshadowed by VE-Day, it is nevertheless a day to remember the sacrifices made in the Far East in WW2.

Followers of Chiselbury will know that we have recently published the brilliant 'Forgotten Armour' by which keeps that memory alive. However, today I would like to remember my father, James Leasor, who wrote a number of books about Burma, which we are pleased to publish.

At the end of the war, his patrol had entered a jungle clearing near Moulmein in Burma just after Japan had officially surrendered. He recalled:

"There was a rustling in the undergrowth, and out charged a bad-tempered water buffalo with a sign in English tied to its tail reading: 'Is the war over?'
We shouted 'Yes, it's over,' very loudly, whereupon a group of Japanese officers emerged, thanked us very much, and disappeared into the jungle.

Monday 19 August marks the 82nd anniversary of the ill-fated Dieppe Raid. At Chiselbury we are proud to have published two books on Operation 'Jubilee' - 'Green Beach' by James Leasor and 'The Man Under the Radar' by Linda Nissen Samuels. Both feature the amazing adventures of one man, Flt Sgt Jack Nissenthall, who volunteered to go on what could have been a su***de mission to learn more about the state of German radar development.

As Nissenthall knew the secrets of Anglo-American radar technology, he was given a personal bodyguard of sharpshooters from the Canadian South Saskatchewan Regiment. Their orders were to protect him, but in the event of possible capture to kill him. His choice was to succeed or die.

The story of what happened to him and his bodyguards during the bloody Dieppe raid is one of World War II's most terrifying stories of personal heroism. I was fortunate enough to meet Nissenthall and the encounter is recounted in 'The Man Under the Radar':

"When my father, James Leasor, was writing the story of Jack Nissenthall's secret Dieppe mission, published as 'Green Beach', Jack came to stay a number of times at my parent's home in Wiltshire.

I remember Jack saying, during a family supper in what must have been the school holidays, that he was going to show us something that helped win the war. He then produced from his pocket a small cylindrical, metal object with some holes drilled in it. He then told us how it revolutionised the accuracy of radar. It was seemingly just a routine supper to a teenage boy, and yet it was one of those fascinating evenings that you remember for the rest of your life".

This is not just an ordinary Japanese officer's sword from WW2. This example, on display in the Museum in Edinburgh Castle, was taken as a trophy of war by Trooper Vernon Jenkins of the 3rd Carabiniers on the Irrawaddy River in early 1945.

Two of Jenkins' fellow tank crew members, including Captain Hubert Cornaby, the A Squadron Leader, had been killed by it, before Jenkins finally dispatched the sword's owner in desperate hand to hand combat INSIDE the turret of their Lee tank. For his outstanding bravery, Jenkins was awarded a Military Medal.

Could this action inside the claustrophobic turret of a Lee tank be the closest combat any tank crew fought in WW2? Read the full story in stunning book 'Forgotten Armour: Tank Warfare in Burma'.

The book is available (address in bio), and from Amazon and all good bookshops.
