Flowing for just over 2,600 kilometres across northern India, the Ganges is more than just a river. For Hindus, it’s the Mother Goddess Ganga herself and a focus of religious devotion for tens of millions of people across the world. It’s also a vital source of water and life for more than 40 per cent of India’s billion-plus population. And yet the river is being sullied by the very people who revere her. Every day, around three million litres of sewage is emptied into the Ganges – and only about half of that has undergone any kind of treatment. The river’s waters are so dirty that it’s considered one of the most polluted waterways in the world. The June issue of Geographical is out now. As a girl, growing up in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Nemonte Nenquimo grew up with a sense that outsiders – or cowori – were a threat. Her childhood was a tug-of-war between the traditional lifestyle and values of her Waorani people and the encroachment of the Western world. In this month’s cover story, British journalist and photographer Graeme Green interviews the Indigenous leader about her environmental activism and her successful fight to protect her forest home from oil drilling.
Geographical May 2024 19 April 2024 < 1 minute May 2024 The snow leopard lives in some of the harshest conditions on Earth, where its thick grey-and-white coat renders it almost invisible against the rocky, snow-covered mountains of Central Asia. In the May issue of Geographical, Stuart Butler is on the tracks of this elusive ‘ghost of the mountains’ (as it is often known) in India’s Ladakh region, where snow leopard tourism is helping to support both the big cats and the residents of the remote mountain villages that live alongside them.
