NEW BAROQUE — Ada Witczyk, violin | HOWLEY • DE LILLO • PETSHAFT • SKÖLD • GORMAN-TYSOE [FHR160D]
Excerpts from 'New Baroque' [FHR160D]. Released 26 Jan 2024
Ada Witczyk, violin adawitczyk
NEW BAROQUE is an album of contemporary music, pushing the boundaries of creativity and what is possible on baroque violin.
In early 2023 Witczyk commissioned former winners of the Růžičková Composition Competition to compose new works for baroque violin. The results will surprise you with new ideas and very distinct musical languages that each composer represents. Both the roughness and lower tension of gut strings offer a wide palette of colours that Witczyk has used to present each of the five pieces and the stories behind them.

"Vestiva: not only our red thread throughout the album, referring to one of our favourite madrigal hits "Vestiva i colli", but also a metaphorical motto: "dressing up" the music with colours, diminutions, trilli, accenti... (as the hills, the "colli", in the original madrigal text are dressed up with flowers) in the balancing act of pure flexibility and absolute punctuality or momentum - creating spoken "words" with a minimal, reduced instrumentation and without actual sung text." 'Caoineadh' - Irlandiani
Here's a little excerpt from 'Caoineadh' the first single (released 18-08-23) from Ilandiani's 2nd album 'Smock Alley' (released 15-09-23). 'Caoineadh' (meaning to cry/weep in Irish) was written by the ensemble's cellist, Carina Drury, and is based on the traditional Irish air 'Caoineadh na dTrí Muire'. The 2 cellos and violone (double bass) in this track, creates a really gorgeous, lush timbre.
