A grassroots organisation is making history by launching the UK’s very first heritage month to recognise and celebrate East and South East Asian (ESEA) communities living in the UK. September will mark the heritage month, created by .n (Britain’s East and South East Asian Network), a volunteer-led group that aims to fuel positive representation for ESEA people, with the goal of getting it recognised by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Putting a spotlight on particular ethnic communities is not a new thing – after all, the UK currently observes Black History Month (October) and South Asian Heritage Month (August). But the birth of an ESEA Heritage Month now is timely, especially after the racial challenges faced by the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

It also brings to the fore stories of migrants who came to the UK from all over Asia in the 1970s to be trained in the NHS, as the UK government embarked on a massive expansion of the health service. 🇧🇳🇲🇲🇰🇭🇹🇱🇮🇩🇱🇦🇲🇾🇵🇭🇸🇬🇹🇭🇻🇳🇨🇳🇭🇰🇯🇵🇲🇴🇲🇳🇰🇵🇰🇷🇹🇼

When photographer Alberto Tandoi embarked on his Faces of London portrait series in 2020, he looked to demonstrate just how diverse beauty can be by documenting countless variant forms that he observed when discovering the capital. “London always fascinated me,” he explains, “there are people from all over the world with extremely compelling looks and personalities, and photography is a great excuse to explore the city and meet interesting people.”

“House of the Dragon” star Steve Toussaint, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryon a.k.a. “The Sea Snake” on the series, slammed viewers of the “Game of Thrones” prequel who took issue with his casting.

“It seems to be very hard for people to swallow,” Toussaint said in an interview with Men’s Health. “They are happy with a dragon flying. They’re happy with white hair and violet-colored eyes, but a rich Black guy? That’s beyond the pale.”

However, as Toussaint notes, those who feel his casting is unrealistic have no problem buying into the existence of dragons and magic — not to mention that screen adaptations often stray from matching exact character descriptions in the source material.

“What has been wonderful is for every toxic person that has somehow found their way into my timeline, there have been so many others who have been so supportive and been like, ‘Oh my god, I can’t wait, this is going to be great!'” Toussaint added. “Even when we were doing certain scenes, there would be supporting artists who would come up and go, ‘It’s great to have this representation.'” ✊🏽👏🏽🙌🏽🤎
