Just Runners

Just Runners Just Runners is a recruitment agency for the film industry. We provide entry level opportunities to the freelance workforce devoid of nepotism Namely runners.

Just Runners is a talent agency for the film industry that aims to combat nepotism. We focus on inexperienced wannabe film makers, making their first steps into the industry. We recruit from the best students from a wide range of courses that we have aligned with (BFI, Creative Skillset, Ghetto Film School). We run a boot camp and then selection process. From there we represent the best candidates

for freelance employment. We represent these runners for 6 months and then they move on to the normal freelance market. And a new group of candidates move in. We act only as the first step into the freelance market.

60% of the film industry got their start as a runner. It is a vital role in the industry. However due to the informal recruiting nature of the film industry these roles are often taken up by people knowing someone else in the industry. We would like Just Runners to be there for all the people who have a passion for the film industry but do not know someone who works in it. We would like to vouch for them and help them get their first start in the industry. So we are appealling to the film industry to give back a little and try and help those who are first starting in the industry. To come together and create a platform that is a level playing field for all, whether they know someone in the industry or not.

As we return to set, the 'watercooler' chat is ALL about what we watched during lockdown.

JRUK's Burcu found salvation in Miracle in Cell No. 7 on Netflix:

"This is the film that I watched on repeat during lockdown! Miracle In Cell No.7 is a Turkish film – inspired by a Korean film – about a disabled father who is accused of doing something he hasn’t done. It reminded me of some values that we had forgotten. In lockdown, when we were away from families, friends and loved ones – this film showed me that a little event can change your life completely within seconds..."

*In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity*

We caught up with Just Runner's Burcu, to find out how she's being coping on set one whole year after returning to work during the pandemic.

"I was recently on a shoot with Biscuit Filmworks, which went very smoothly and masks were worn. It has been over a year since we had to wear face masks and be socially distanced on set. However, it feels so normal now that the face mask doesn’t stop me from connecting with people and getting to know everyone on set. At first wearing face masks felt so stressful but these days it doesn’t stop me from talking and getting involved more with everyone. Now I try and convince new runners not to let wearing masks stop them from connecting on set and getting to know everyone in their roles."

Burcu downloaded a lot from 2nd AD Henry and producer Samantha. Thanks guys for being so inclusive, and thank you Biscuit 👏

“Everybody loves the sunshine” but some folk gots to work. Just Runners' Martin recently got on set with Katie and Academy Films on a commercial for vegan food.

"It was a great shoot and I got to work with Academy again. I even knew a few of the people I was on set with, which was great. It was a fairly seamless studio shoot, and very straightforward. I have now built a good relationship with folk at Academy and hope to work with them again soon."

We salute Katie and Academy for showing Martin the ropes. Inclusion isn't anywhere without you guys. 👏

Just Runner's Nicky picks the TV show that first reached out and pulled her in – the revolutionary Skins by All3Media. With so few varied narratives up there on the big screen, isn't this sort of validation the ultimate point of inclusion?

"The TV show truly relatable to me I guess would be Skins Season 1 and 2, as it was just about a bunch of teenagers not really knowing what they were doing and trying to figure it out and just having fun and making a mess, going through real life problems and trying to deal with it!"

“Some people say, well, you really came a little too early,” Dash says, shrugging. “I was born exactly when I was supposed to be.” The problem was the gatekeepers, who “wanted to see their known world re-created, you know? And that’s not what I wanted to produce. I had other stories I wanted to tell, and I still do.”

Women directors in the 1970s set the scene for decades of film and television breakthroughs. Now they’re finally getting their due.

Another interesting one from Variety this week, we like to think we help build those connections at Just Runners but there is much more work to be done.

"There is a willingness to improve diversity in the industry, Kumar says, but further work needs to be done. Although programs for getting a foot in the door exist, maintaining momentum is more difficult in an industry in which clear pathways rarely exist, and zig-zagging is the norm.

'If you come from a disadvantaged background, or you feel the other, you lose confidence quite quickly,' she says. One way to assist career progression is to 'help them build connections; so mentoring becomes really important,' she says. 'We also help them build networks.'"

More on-set chat as we discuss what we watched in lockdown. Whether its Netflix, Prime, Mubi, Britbox – you name it, we've devoured it... Just Runner's Audrey takes you back to 2015, to Marvel's not-for-kids, reluctant superhero series Jessica Jones.

"I will always miss Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix. Thinking about character relatability in a Marvel or other franchises of the same caliber is not evident. Audiences watch these mainly for the action, the empowerment and the heroes fighting their foes. In the case of Jessica Jones, however, I found myself relating to the main character a great deal. Don't worry, not the alcoholism part!

But her view of the world, her demeanour, I felt like it was a little bit me a few years ago. I found myself saying "Yes, exactly!" several times to the TV when Krysten Ritter was delivering one of her signature funny, acerbic lines. I did not live the same experiences as the hero. I do not, unfortunately, possess her powers, for instance. Still, falling for a misanthropic lifestyle like Jessica certainly has a pull in me when I see the state of human beings in the world. Watching her character develop across the seasons was addictive, as well as having a reluctant female hero, different from the other female heroes I had seen. Most importantly, the themes of her story were addressed in an impactful and lasting way."
