Do you enjoy cutting out? Some people find it anxiety-producing, but others revel in the sound of fabric shears slicing through new fabric, snipping the notches with their perfectly sharp scissors, and the juicy anticipation of sitting down to sew their next project. Either way, well-chosen scissors and good cutting techniques can make the experience more enjoyable. Liz Haywood shares her top ten tips with you!

New on Learn to Sew: How to Make and Apply Piping ✂️

Piping is a trim made from a strip of fabric cut on the bias, wrapped around a cord and stitched to hold the cord in place. It's used as a design feature, inserted into a seam or on an edge to accentuate the garment's lines. Piping is used on clothes for people of any age or gender, accessories and home décor such as cushions and armchairs.

Piping can be bought ready-made or you can make your own. Ready-made piping comes in a limited range of colours, and sometimes doesn't have piping cord in it, as it's woven all-in-one with the cord included, so it can be preferable to make your own. It's very simple to make. shares how:

Inside Issue 38. Alice Keal he designer behind Stitched in Wonderland shares how to apply an exposed zipper to your next garment.

Exposed zippers are a fantastic way to make a statement with your handmade garments. Usually, when adding a zip, you’ll use the garment fabric to cover it and hide it as much as possible. With an exposed zip, the teeth and tape are on display so this gives a wonderful opportunity to experiment with the zip material and colours to give your garment a bespoke edge. This technique works well for necklines, skirt openings or just as a decorative feature.

A firm favourite on Learn To Sew! – What Threads Should you Use....

How do you pick your threads? Do you just select your thread by colour? Sewing with the right thread is the key to any successful sewing project...

Threads have come a long way since the caveman was sewing hide and fur together with fine strips of animal hide. The first uses of thread were to create woven tapestries from wool yarn and then seamstresses began to use the same material to create garments. We’ve created the ultimate guide to what threads you should use and why.

– Meet The Makers – Matchy Matchy Sewing Club! –

We’re based in California, just outside of Los Angeles. We met at work years ago and worked closely in graphic design and stationery. During the pandemic, we were both sewing at home and sharing our makes with one another. It was a transitional point for us and seemed like the perfect time to try something new, and Matchy Matchy Sewing Club was born!

As self-taught sewists with a passion for simple and smart design, we believe creativity doesn't have to be complicated, mistakes can be magical, and good today is better than perfect tomorrow! We aim to create everyday patterns that are easy enough for everyone to make, design-forward, fun to sew and easy to wear!"

✂️ How to Sew Undulating Pintucks ✂️

Right now, one of my favourite blouse patterns to sew is the Tilly and the Buttons Marnie Blouse. This is a super cute dress and blouse pattern with lots of pretty details included such as a frill sleeve, a ruffle collar and those all-important and super pretty undulating pin tucks.

At first glance, these can look a little scary since they do require a bit more time and care but don’t be put off or tempted to leave them out. These cute little tucks can elevate this blouse and once you know how to sew them you’ll want to add them to everything as they aren’t as difficult as they look and are so satisfying once done – I promise!
