I thought I had it bad with my freezing face when I spotted this female mallard in the river. At first, I was worried that she couldn’t breathe or eat, but luckily I saw that she could open her mouth.
She was shaking her head and scratching the ice, and I’m guessing that she was trying to get rid of it. Eventually, she tucked her bill in under her feathers, and hopefully, the ice melted away.
I asked a few bird nerds (bird nerd is a good thing) why this happens. They said that this sometimes happens when the mallards take breaks from dipping their bills into the water, allowing layer upon layer of water to freeze on top of each other.
Another way for the birds to get rid of the ice is to keep looking for food in the water, without taking breaks. The water is much warmer than the ice, so it wouldn’t take long for the ice to melt if she went down into the water again.

10 minutes before sunrise, the ospreys had already worked themselves into a frenzy. This bird immediately caught my eye as it folded its wings and entered its high-speed free fall towards some poor unsuspecting fish. Its entry into the water created a massive splash that became magically lit by the soon-to-rise sun. As the bird rose like a Phoenix, that same brilliant light set the bird ablaze with an amazing fiery colour making it appear to indeed be a Phoenix. I didn’t even notice the fishing line dangling from its catch until I got home. Modern camera gear is amazing! Glad I’m not a fish!
Are these a specific type of peacock or are they leucistic peacocks?
