One dentist to every 600 children: How NHS dentist shortages are pushing parents into debt

An increasing number of parents in England are finding themselves under immense financial pressure to fund essential dental treatments, particularly orthodontics, for their children. With NHS waiting lists stretching into years and private treatments often prohibitively expensive, families might be pushed into debt, relying on credit cards, payment plans, overdrafts, or personal loans to cover mounting costs.

The growing demand for dental care and the shortage of dentists
A stark imbalance exists between the number of dental professionals and the growing population of children in need of care. Latest data reveals:

Number of children under 18 in England: 14,403,544
Number of registered NHS dentists: 24,200
This equates to one dentist for every 600 children, a concerning ratio that fails to account for adult patients or dentists who work part-time or exclusively in private practice. The strain on NHS dental services is clear, leaving families facing lengthy waiting times. For children requiring orthodontic work, delays can mean missing the crucial developmental window for treatment. As a result, many parents feel forced to turn to private care, where costs escalate quickly. In fact, 27% of Brits report having to go private after being unable to secure an NHS appointment, highlighting the growing pressure on public healthcare and the financial burden it places on households.

The financial burden of private dental treatments
Private dental care is a costly option for many families, and the numbers paint a clear picture of the financial challenge:

New customer examination: £74
Existing customer examination: £52
Hygienist appointment (30 mins): £67
Non-surgical extraction: £125
Filling (white composite): £124
Anterior root canal (front tooth): £403
Orthodontic treatments, such as braces, are the most significant expense, costing between £2,000 and £5,000 depending on the complexity. Combined with rising household bills, mortgage repayments, and childcare costs, many families find these out-of-pocket expenses impossible to manage without taking on debt. https://www.pepper.money/

Liverpool’s Residents Striving to Slim Down BEFORE 2025, New Study Finds
A nationwide analysis reveals the UK’s top locations determined to lose weight before the new year.
Rochdale claims the top spot, with 34.86% of residents classified as obese, 73.33% overweight, and over 26,400 weight-loss searches per month.
Liverpool ranks fourth, with 29.82% of its population obese and 67.22% overweight, generating almost 73,000 monthly searches for weight-loss solutions.
New data reveals the UK cities and towns most focused on weight-loss ahead of the new year, with Liverpool making the top list.
The study, carried out by the weight-loss programme Second Nature, examined obesity rates across the UK and analysed over 200 keywords to pinpoint the areas with the highest interest in weight loss ahead of the new year. By determining a ranking per 100,000 residents, the research pinpointed cities and towns most committed to shedding pounds during the festive season.
Scoring 79.36, Liverpool ranks fourth in overweight cities looking to drop weight before the new year. With 29.82% of adults classified as obese and 67.22% overweight, the city saw over 72,900 searches last month.

Second Nature exists to change minds about losing weight. Our app uses behavioural science to retrain your mind to make healthy choices automatically, so these stick in the long run

£10 to send a Christmas card by 2030, new data reveals
New data has revealed the cost of sending a Christmas card this festive season, alongside predictions of what it could end up costing in six years' time.
Online casino experts at Kasinohai analysed both past and current stamp prices, as well as the average cost of a Christmas card from five of the biggest UK supermarkets.
In 2024, to send one Christmas card first class, it will cost you around £2.36. If you decide to opt for the slightly cheaper option of second class, it will still set you back £1.56.
In the past two years, the cost of first class stamps have skyrocketed by 73.7%. Currently, a pack of eight first class stamps costs £13.20.
Antti Virtanen, iGaming expert at Kasinohai has commented on the findings and given some cost-cutting advice: “With the cost of stamps rising, sending a Christmas card is starting to feel like a luxury fewer people can afford.
“In terms of actual cards, there are several budget options you can choose from, and buying in bulk one year means you should still have plenty left for the following year, which will save you money in the long run.
“However, the sharp and continued rise of stamps is worrying. If you’re able, consider hand-delivering cards, or opting for digital versions, if you cannot justify the costs.”
Should this trend continue, this could rise to an eye-watering £69.04 in 2030, equivalent to £8.63 per stamp.
Second class stamps have also seen a cost increase, albeit far from the levels of first class prices. In 2024, a pack of eight first class stamps costs £6.80, a 25% increase since 2022. By 2030, this continued rise could mean the same pack would cost £35.76, or £4.47 per stamp.
Christmas card prices fluctuate from supermarket to supermarket, with most bringing out both budget and premium ranges.
Asda has the cheapest choice, at just 3p per card, as well as the joint cheapest average price alongside Morrisons at 42p per card.
Unsurprisingly, M&S has the most expensive option at £3 per card, and the most expensive average price at £1.53 per card.
Overall, the average price of a supermarket Christmas card in 2024 will cost you 71p. If inflation rises by 4% each year, this could cost you around 90p per card by 2030.
That means, that in 2030, it could end up costing you £9.53 to send one single Christmas card first class.
