Is AI in music the revenge of the machines? In the late seventies and eighties a lot of drummers were copying drum machines. Now it's the turn of the machines to copy humans. But what if they copy the copy? Will AI get its inspiration from AI when there is no human music to copy?

Lady X's 'Hector' is a homage to a Flemish film featuring Belgian legend Urbanus. More info in first comment.

Lady X - Home Recording MMXXIV - literally. Extract of the interview on v92dvg.com.
David: For the technically minded, the details:
We did the basic takes on 4 tracks:
the drums (4 SM57(!) microphones for the kick drum, snare drum and two overheads) mixed in stereo on tracks 1 and 2.
Bass on track 3 and rhythm guitar on track 4.
We played together, as we used to play live, Guy in the living room of my home at the time and the three of us in a small room where the recorder and mixing boards were located.
I seem to remember that the bass was recorded directly on the desk and that Erwin didn't use an amp but had one of the first 'Sansamp' pedals.
We only recorded a single take of each song in the repertoire, starting again from zero with each mistake. You can hear Guy say at the end of one of the songs ‘this one is good’ :), I left it on the new mix.
Then Erwin and I mixed all the 'basic' tracks in stereo on a DAT cassette.
We transferred these stereo mixes to a new 4-track tape and we were left with two new tracks for the second guitar, the vocals and the solos. Tracks 1 and 2: drums-bass-1st guitar mix, track 3: second guitar and track 4: vocals and solo. Some guitar solos are cut abruptly because the singing had to resume :)

Lady X - Interview extract:
Why this name “Lady x”, and who came up with it?

Erwin : I did, I suggested this name to David because first it sounded good, and then the “X” always sounds a little mysterious. Plus, we didn’t have a pretty girl in the group, which normally always attracts crowds. At the time, there was no Internet, so if people saw “Lady X” on a poster, they were intrigued and curious. So that meant more people at the concerts. Once the disappointment of not seeing the mysterious Lady X on stage was over, all that remained was to convince them with our music. David then also reminded me that Lady X was a character in the Buck Danny comic strip. And finally, the name was not attached to any particular music scene, so it was the perfect name for us.

David: I have always been attracted to comics. I had just come out of a group called Guinea Pig, after the character from the Edgar P. Jacobs book The Yellow Mark. Lady X is an enemy of Buck Danny. And I also think that Erwin liked the mysterious side of the name; he was the one who had the idea.

Lady X Home Recording MMXXIV - story of a remix

At the start of 2024, while tidying up my archives I realized that it had been 30 years since Lady X's Home Recording album was released. It does not make us any younger!
Realizing that I hadn't listened to this album in years, I took the CD out of my collection and immersed myself in the era...
First impression: But what did we eat to play in such a hurry?! There is a nice ‘garage’ vibe that is sometimes missing in more recent productions! Second impression, the sound has aged a bit, and not for the better. You can't hear the instruments well, there are mistakes everywhere, some mixes are frankly weird (Great, for example)! In short, my producer’s ear couldn't take it anymore and the desire to remix the album came quite naturally.
What was decisive in this project was that I had archived the original multitracks from the 1994 recording. In 30 years, sound technology has evolved so much that nothing is impossible anymore and our ears have become used to hearing perfection. Is this good? That’s another debate! As far as I am concerned, I have chosen to respect the original vibe of the album. No ‘Autotune’ corrections on this project! On the other hand, I did use some current technology to bring out the instruments, particularly the drums played by our dear friend Guy Smal, who unfortunately left us in 2022. A few missed chords here and there which had begun to annoy me after the sonic improvement and maybe a slight timing adjustment in a few places (perfectionism is a disease, did you know that?). Overall the songs are the same, but updated. I also did not over compress the master (I hate those super loud mixes) in order to keep it pleasant to listen to.
The track ‘Great’ surprised me when I heard it for the first time in years on the original CD. The music comes and goes, the singing is mostly whispered, the stereo is a little crazy, why? When I opened the multitrack files, I suddenly remembered the reason for this somewhat mad mix... We had played it wrong!!! Everything was played live and at certain moments we had seriously messed up!!! There were so many errors on that track that we thought we didn’t have any other choice but to drop it… until a very original mix solved the problem! How daring! So I ended up with these errors for the remix. Fortunately, what was impossible back then is very possible today. Thanks to all those modern tools you can finally experience this song as it should have been on the original!
Another interesting aspect of this album is the (very) broken English used throughout. It’s such a sign of the ‘whatever’ attitude of those days that we never really checked our lyrics or pronunciation.. Some of it is clear ‘Yogurt’ as we used to call it! I think it adds to the freshness and the punk attitude that was prevailing at the time of the original album’s recording.
I hope you like the album!

(O) - Meraki Review by Steve Cowan June 2022 (O) is the enigmatic electro guise of two musicians from Lincolnshire, whose names are deliberately left out of their online presence to retain an air of mystery.
