Yellowbelly Records

Yellowbelly Records Yellowbelly Records is a Lincolnshire-based record label. This was the catalyst of conversation regarding the decline and rise of physical media in music.

The story so far…

One crisp winter night, two Lincolnshire musicians found themselves in a dinky old pub, listening to an extraordinary local artist. Enthused by their desire to hear more, they found that the artist had a self-produced CD, which they immediately purchased. Seeing the popularity of this CD and the joy it brought to all, they knew there and then that there needed to be more. Thus c

ame the birth of Yellowbelly Records. Lincolnshire has always had a great variety of talented musicians, but, in this digital age, it is more difficult than ever to support local artists. This is what we are setting out to rectify; riding the resurgence of physical media to support artists across the county. Yellowbelly Records is working with local artists to give them opportunities to produce physical media and merchandise for their musical careers and aspirations, creating a catalogue of releases across a variety of artists that Lincolnshire can be proud of. To help enable artists to invest into their releases, we are putting on a variety of showcases to demonstrate the talent in Lincolnshire’s music scene. The funds raised from these events will be going straight back into helping artists fund physical releases of their music, supported by a team of dedicated physical media enthusiasts. We are also partnering with talent across Lincolnshire’s art scene, including fine artists, photographers and videographers, graphic designers and stage engineers, to bring out the best Lincolnshire has to offer.

We are very pleased to see that Jack Kendrick is starting his year in the studio!

With how incredible his debut album was, we can't wait to see his second album unleashed, hopefully later this year!

And finally, our advent concludes on day 24, as well all look forward to Xmas tomorrow.

For this post, Cullen was meant to give a brief summary of the year, but ended up writing much more than expected. So much so it wouldn't all fit on this post! So instead, he's put all that in a page on the website;
https://www.yellowbellyrecords.co.uk/cullen-advent-2024

To give a brief overview of the post;
Cullen finally releases an album!
He goes over the amazing things we've done in YBR this year, including some insight into how we've done some things behind the scenes.
He discusses the improvements we've made in Yellowbelly Recorded, as well as a new series of releases we're working on.
He talks about the live music he's been a part of this year, primarily being a Broken Wonder.
He goes on again about how he's going to be on Robot Wars next year! (Kinda, differnt name, same destruction!)
And a recap on everything else, as he had to wrap things up before he ran out of time.

I really did end up writing a lot, so if you do end up giving it a read, know that I really appreciate it and thank you so much. I know time's limited in the festive season, so feel free to come back to it later on, no pressure!

I'd struggle to go into detail thanking everyone, so as a short list, I'd like to give a massive thanks to;
My wife Annmarie (happy birthday!); our son Killian; my mum, dad, Maia & Seth; Mick & Carol from Magnumpix Photography; Jack Kendrick and Jim; Ed & Dale at Not That Kind Of CIC; Tony, Jan and Jay at Crafty Cove, Whitby; Greg, Zoe, Jacob, Rob, Sam, Ed, Shane, Dave, and all the amazing people I've met at Robots Live; Danny Topliss; all the Yellowbelly crew; all of the fantastic artists we've gotten to work with this year; and of course Rupert Ibbotson, the crazy man who continues to carry on this riduculous endeavour with me.
There are so many other people I want to thank, but time and exhaustion are once again against me. If I didn't write you in this list, it doesn't mean I don't appreaciate you, it just means I'm knackered and forgetful.

Merry Xmas to all of you, and I'll catch you in 2025! 🤘

With just two more days to go on our 2024 Yellowbelly Records advent calendar, we are at that time where Cullen and I write out War and Peace...

So, here it goes...

When we started Yellowbelly Records three years ago, I could not have fathomed the legs it has since grown. What started out as a quite literal sitting in a pub idea, has since blossomed into a bit of a tour de force, which I for one am sensationally proud to be a part of. We have had phenomenal gigs, and not so phenomenal gigs, but have learnt so so much along the way.

I have surprised myself when it comes to artwork, and have loved comparing our early posters and album artwork to those which have been released this year, and I cannot quite believe that we have released over 35 CDs since starting out, with a whopping 18 of those being released this year alone! And to think that we have delved into metal, folk, blues, steampunk, rap and a whole host of other genres, I am so pleased to see a yellow wall of incredible Lincolnshire artists on my CD shelf, with our cheeky little Yellow Imp proudly showing on the spine.

I have made so many friends through being a part of Yellowbelly Records too, many of which I would arguably never have met, had it not been for the label. It is incredible to still feel, three years in, that Yellowbelly Records is a community, and I have loved seeing artists we have worked with meeting one another, and in turn forming their own friendships and, in a few instances, musical relationships (Gaz and Adele - looking at you guys here, as that partnership is still absolutely incredible).

I am very excited to see what 2025 brings Yellowbelly Records, but would like to say a huge huge thank you to everyone who has made 2022, 2023 and 2024 the years they were - to all the artists, the fine fine folks at Crafty Cove, Whitby, the gorgeous guys at Not That Kind Of CIC, the Yellowbelly Records crew (you all know who you are), the music lovers who have helped make this madcap venture possible in the first place, and of course Mr Gaskell himself, because without you being crazy enough to start this whole adventure off with me, there would be no Yellowbelly Records, thank you thank you thank you!

And lastly, here is a cartoon version of me with a glass of wine raised wishing cheers to you all for this festive season!

Advent day 22, and today we'd like to celebrate these 18 fantastic records we put out this year.

If you've listened to any of these records, you know how much care, passion and talent has been poured into them by these artists. From folk to punk, from swing to blues, from poetry to metal; we have really seen a little bit of everything that the Lincolnshire music scene has to offer. We've got to summarise these albums as best we can in the text limit, so here goes;

1. Bardishish (Rob Oldfield Music) - The Armageddon And How To Deal With It: Wonderfully constructed storytelling; enthralling.

2. Dire Thorns - State of Sikosis: Absolutely brutal, extremely intricatly played.

3. Les Brown Art and Music - Reflections: A beautiful meander, powerful lyrics throughout.

4. Gaz Clitheroe Musician - The Law Of Entanglement: Catchy, toe tapping, melodic and thought provoking.

5. Adele Wilkinson - Time To Say Goodbye: A wonderful project, unique and catchy melodies.

6. Jack Kendrick and the Broken Wonders - Ready Or Not: A wonderful collection of filming great songs, a taste of things to come.

7. Carrianne Rogers Music - Just Folking Around: Absolutely stunning performance, heart-wrenching songs.

8. Free 2 Decide - What You Have Come To Be: A dynamic collection, groovy and soulful.

9. Adele Wilkinson - Lost and Found: A fantastic evolution, stellar musicianship, proggy and melodic.

10. News for Parrots - Breaking News: Can't help but dance, loud in all the right ways.

11. Concrete Badger - Live And Loud In Louth: A solid performance, super catchy, metal at its finest.

12. Kev Hackney & Rupert Ibbotson - The Songs of a Rambling Yellowbelly Volume 1: Beautiful words, seamlessly blended with perfect songcrafting and vocal delivery.

13. Sunday Underbelly - The "Unofficial" Album: A collection of Lincoln's finest brought together for a fantastic cause, a true no-skip compilation.

14. Madam Misfit - Elixir of Swing: A little bit of everything, cohesively delivered with a devilish smile, lovely from start to finish.

15. Madam Misfit - Vitamin M: Just the pill we need to get us in a good mood, gets you moving every time.

16. Jack Kendrick - Similar Mistakes: An unexpected treat to Jack's growing fan base, a fun and engaging look into what could have been.

17. Deep Six Blues - The Devil's Hand: A sensational debut, solid blues vibes throughout.

18. Stafford Galli - Bring It Back Home: Instant classic, familiar like we already know it, fresh enough to keep finding new things each listen.

We are blown away that just a couple of years into this adventure, we've added these 18 sensational records into our catalog, which now totals 37 releases over 3 years. With 7 releases in 2022 and 12 in 2023, it's safe to say we've been growing at a decent rate. We lookback on all of these records very fondly, and have learned a lot working on each of them. We already know there's a number of sensational records coming next year, and we very much look forward to working on all kinds of new records in 2025!

Advent day 21, let's give some love to the Yellowbelly Crew!

First off, many thanks to Mick and Carol at Magnumpix Photography. They've been at nearly every event taking fantastic photos, e wouldn't have asked for a greater photography partner for our events, and we are eternally grateful.

Next up is of course Josh, always happy to lend a hand, always willing to learn, and has quite clearly been demonstrating his skills throughout the year; thanks a million bud!

Alongside Josh in the pic is new face Tommy, who has helped out at a couple of events this year. He has a great eye for live production, and has been picking up a lot very quickly in our time together.

Next is the lass of many talents; lights, sound, stage management; Mary can really do it all, and we're so grateful to be working with her. We're sure you'll be seeing her at our shows next year too.

Our Henry's been a busy boy this year! As well as helping out at many events, he also drove all the way up to Whitby and back; a long drive, but one filled with conversation and collaboration.

We got to see Caleb again at a couple of gigs this year. An lovely chap, always happy to crack on and does so with great skill and style. Looking forward to gigging together again next year!

Andrew has been a busy boy indeed, and has produced a fantastic record that we're very happy to be putting out next year. A very talented producer and mix artist, here's to more mixes together!

Harley has once again dazzled us with lighting prowess, and will surely feature at our larger gigs next year making all the artists look spectacular!

Dale and Ed at Not That Kind Of CIC have already had a post, but they're wonderful and have done so much for us!

Likewise for Tony, Jan and Jay at the Crafty Cove, Whitby; a brilliant bunch. More quality gigs and merch to come next year!

We could go on all day with appreciation for these guys; they've come in clutch no end of times, and without them we wouldn't have been able to do mroe than half of what we acheived this year; thank you all so much!

What started as a little joke has turned out to become a fantastic community project that's seen dozens of musicians contribute to their musical madness! We got them their first gig 2 years ago - in Morrisons car park of all things - and the amount this group has grown and developed in that time is admirable.

Now starting to dip their toes in songwriting, this heartfelt and tounge-in-cheek record is a smashing debut into original community musicianship. Congratulations to all of the musicians involved, and here's to many great sessions ahead at The Birdcage Lincoln next year!

Day 19 and we're getting a bit sick of this colder weather, so how about we sun it up at the Cornhill Cove instead?

This summer, we were delighted to put on 2 showcase events at the Cove, featuring a bunch of Lincolnshire-grown talent. All of the artists put on great shows to some solid feedback across the board, and we're super proud of the amazing artists they have become.

Huge thanks to Place Immersive and Lincoln BIG for having us host these extraordinary events, and many thanks to the fantastic artists who performed with us; Harry Li, Turning of the Tide, The Miracle Cure, Ben Simmons, Gaz Clitheroe Musician and Jack Kendrick. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and we hope to be back at the Cove next summer for more exciting events!

Day 18 and there's nothing clean about these vocals, riffs or beats; Dire Thorns bring the heavy in for Lincolnshire metal!

This Grimsby based Nu-Metal outfit has been dominating stages across the country, with their masked extravaganzas and powerful stage shows that are sure to impress. Sheffield, Hull, Blackpool, Newcastle and of course many spots in Lincolnshire; these guys are a tour-de-force and mean business!

We're still stoked to be producing their debut EP, 'State of Sikosis', and are continually impressed at the distances we're having to ship their records. These guys aren't just multilingual, their appeal crosses all boundaries to unite all in metal.

Raise a glass for these metal monsters, and here's to their dominance continuing in the new year. 🤘

Day 17 and we'd like to highlight a particular venue, team and family that is doing absolute wonders for the Lincolnshire music scene; WROOT ROCKS!

Who'd've thought a village hall in a tiny village in North Lincolnshire could have so quickly become one of the top venues for local and touring artists of all kinds? We've been to so many shows at Wroot this year and have gotten to know, respect and love the whole package. From the sensational live music venue, to the absolutely lovely crew, there's every reason this venue has exceeded all expectations.

On top of one of the best venues in the county, the team also organise 2 fantastic festivals in the county; EY UP MI DUCK MUSIC FESTIVAL and Gig In A Field. Each of them are sensational in every way, and you should get to them if you can. We've not attended a more friendly, musically talented and chilled festival ever, and we highly recommend you give them a go!

We want to wish Neil, Amber, Julie, Ady and all the Wroot Rocks crew a very happy Xmas, and we look forward to working together closely in the new year! 🖤

Less than 10 sleeps to go, but you absolutely don't want to sleep on our 'Official' and 'Unofficial' Sunday Underbelly albums!

These compilations bring some of the best talent that appeared on the Sunday Underbelly, presented by the wonderful Katy B on LCR FM. The Official album launched last year as part of our send-off event for the Underbelly show, while the Unofficial album released this year to mark the anniversary of the event. Featuring live recordings of songs played at that event, it's a truly special album to listen to; exploring all the weird and wonderful musicians united by the Sunday Underbelly.

The profits raised from these compilations go to supporting LCR FM Lincoln, so if you're after a compilation that covers all aspects of Lincolnshire's music scene, get these records and help us support this fantastic radio station!

If you've got some Sunday blues, let's get on some Deep Six Blues for day 15!

These guys have nailed their debut into the world, even entering the blues charts with this sensational album. We were honoured to be approached by these guys to produce the physical version of this awesome record, and we're super happy to keep supporting these upcoming legends in the new year.

You don't need to look far for industry praise for 'The Devils Hand', and it's clear to see why! Give it a listen online and grab a CD at one of their stellar live shows. They will also be available online very soon, so keep an eye on this page for more!

Day 14 and living the dream, spinning 'What You Have Come To Be' from Free 2 Decide!

We had a great time putting together this album, spending a lot of time in iterations and improvements before releasing this polished final product. Hayley's songwriting skills are on full display on this record, and the band back her up with fantastic riffs and rhythm.

We launched the album at another awesome gig at The Komodo, and we're very happy to see the band develop and showcase themselves even more through the year. We're wishing them all a very happy Christmas, and look forward to what they bring out in 2025; from the bits we've heard, you won't be disappointed!

Friday 13th, what better time to talk about wild stories and superstitions than with Rob Oldfield Music and his psyedonym Bardishish!

We have released a Bardishish album for each of our years so far, and each one has been incrementally awesome and distinct. Rob's unique blend of musical styles, witty lyricism and bard-like storytelling evoke stunning images with ease and clarity. Each story tells a unique tale, and each is delivered with Rob's multi-instrumental prowess.

Alongside his fantastic backing band, we launched his album "The Armageddon And How To Deal With It" at the Komodo to an engaged and enthralled audience. The instrumentalists also got lots of spotlight, playing some solo slots in-between the main Bardishish feature; Rob curated a fascinating and engaging performance from start to finish, and we were in awe at everything that was presented.

We know Robs already well underway with his next album, so expect a 3rd Bardishish release in 2025!

For day 12 we take a delve into the wonderfully colourful and utterly brilliant world of Madam Misfit!

We were on hand to help launch the new Madam Misfit album at The Engine Shed earlier this year, and we were blown away by the talent, passion and raw energy this one woman show can put on. Backed by her expertly crafted music and lyrics, this is a stage show that we're confident will continue to dominate and evolve in the years to come.

Vitamin M is the latest in the line of genre-mashing goodness that can be heard across the Misfit repertoire. Be sure to catch all the releases on streaming sites, and grab the Madam Misfit records at a show or at;
https://madammisfit.myshopify.com

We tried a lot of new things together, and we learned a lot about creative collaboration, our own limits and working with well-established artists. We'd like to thank Sarah for her hard work, patience and creative passion that will help us improve and grow in 2025. We'd also like to wish Sarah and her family a very merry Christmas, and a fantastic year ahead!
