It was great to catch up with Mike Bennett, the lead singer of @th3blockheads @guilfestival. The Blockheads are an English rock band formed in London in 1977. Originally fronted by lead singer Ian Dury as Ian Dury and the Blockheads, the band has continued to perform since Dury’s death in 2000. They are known for hits like ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’, ‘Same Horse Different Jockey’ and ‘Sex and Drugs’.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK PERFORMING AT GUILFEST?
It feels absolutely great. We really enjoyed playing to such an eclectic audience of all different age ranges. We’ve enjoyed playing the classics, jazz, funk, punk, funk, new wave, all various genres of music thrown into one cohesive body of work.
THE BLOCKHEADS COVER A LOT OF GENRES OF MUSIC IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE FAVOURITE GENRE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
For Chaz Jankel I would say ‘Funk’ and for the band ‘New Wave’ although with a bit of ‘Hard Rock’ thrown in. So eclectic! Because of Ian Drury’s iconic performances and because of the time it came out it captured the audiences of punk but introduced Miles Davis, Parliament and Stevie Dann and groups like this into the new wave scene, so I think that’s why The Blockheads are so unique. Also behind me is a Rolls Royce, so I can afford areal posh ride home!
IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

Spaghetti Tree, winner of the ‘Best Mediterranean Restaurant Award’ in both the 2023 and 2024 Surrey Awards, are organising a big Summer Party in aid of the Walton and Tadworth Preservation Society on Sunday August 25th.

The Eletre is luxury car maker Lotus’ first all-electric hyper-SUV and getting to test drive this stunning new vehicle @bellandcolvill in West Horsley was pure pleasure from start to finish.
The Eletre delivers class-leading ride and handling, steering and aero performance – all areas of automotive design and engineering where Lotus has pioneered and dominated throughout its 75-year history, on both its road cars and race cars.
It comes in 3 models; the standard Eletre (from £89,500) the S version (from £104,000) with more as standard; soft door close, dark rear windows, sportier wheels and a spoiler or you can choose the R version (starting from £120,000) which is the fastest, doing 0-60mph in a staggering 2.9 seconds with an impressive, longlist of added mod-cons.
The standard – which we got to test drive – was still super impressive, doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. You could literally feel the surge and power on acceleration. Plus, the Eletre is fast, with a top speed of 160mph in all 3 of its models.
The Eletre blends the core DNA of Lotus models Emira and Evija, reinterpreting them as a hyper-SUV with advanced suspension and chassis. As well as having full electric seats, an electric steering column there are massage seating options too. The head up display makes the vehicle very safe too, ensuring the driver doesn’t have to look down at the dashboard controls. It is not intrusive either as you can see from the image below on the front windscreen.
Eletre is also future-proofed for Level 4 autonomous driving capability. There is an adaptive cruise control to set to certain speed limits, this feature ensures discipline, keeps safety and prevents any unwanted speeding fines and accidents.

We were mightily impressed with @the.runningmare during our recent visit to the famous Cobham pub. Steeped in history with a beautiful, picturesque setting on The Tilt in Cobham we were wowed from our initial entrance. We were seated in the lively, vibrant ‘Small Bar’ area adorned with Formula One sporting memorabilia and enjoyed exquisite food, drinks and service from the Bar Manager Jimmy and Waitress Mae on this fabulous Tuesday night outing! A family run pub you will often see the owners Adrian and his son Ollie - who took over ‘The Runners’ in 1991 (after Adrian’s 31 year tenure as licencee) turning the pub into the exquisite dining and family friendly establishment that it is today. The focus is firmly on quality, community and fun which the Runners has in spades. Plus, the largest selection of beers and traditional ales we have seen in a long time!
SENSATIONAL STARTERS
With an impressive menu consisting of tantalising dishes including Pan-fried Scallops, Burrata, Soup of the Day and many more we were spoilt for choice. We opted for the Sticky Asian Duck Salad served with honey and hoisin dressing – which was devine. The duck was cooked perfectly with lots of crisp and the portion size was generous with an abundance of duck, seasonal leaves and of course, the delicious sweet dressing. Next up we decided to try the Prawns Pil Pil with six large King Prawns served in a sizzling clay dish with chilli, garlic oil and rustic bread to dip. The dish was amazing; the prawns were large and succulent and flavours intense – the perfect amount of garlic and chilli…spicy but not too spicy.
MAGNIFICENT MAINS
With a wide selection on the mains menu, choosing just the one proved difficult. We went for an 8oz Surrey Farm Fillet Steak which was cooked medium rare to perfection and came with triple cooked chips, peppercorn sauce and a side salad with the ripest vine cherry tomatoes.
