Aromas have barakah , goodness and transformational power, when you use them mindfully and with the right intension.

Working with lemon, both the fresh fruit and essential oil can help you focus and clarify thoughts. I realized that for reaching my personal goals I need to concentrate my efforts more precisely to things that most require my attention.

Aromatic plants and our relationship with them continues to be my passion. Through this page I have shared my reflections about aromatics with others, perhaps also hoped to ignite your intrest towards them - there are so many beautiful ways to work with them for your health and happiness!

The hundreds of posts I have shared continue to be available to you but for now on I will continue my work in private.

It has been wonderful to have you here! ♥️

With love,

Merja, Aromatic guide

Homemade lemonade is an enjoyable way to benefit from the aromatic goodness and baraka of lemons.🍋

Refreshing, energising and excellent for your digestive system!

Using fresh juice of lemons is also far gentler alternative to adding lemon essential oil to your drinking water.

Citrus essential oils, especially cold pressed lemon and lime can easily cause irritation and sensitivity when used topically or internally, so caution is the best way to avoid unnecessary problems.

Summer is perfect time to diffuse oils from the mint, citrus and floral families.

During my travel to Morocco I used lemon essential oil in inhalation. It is refreshing and helps with travel sickness.Holding it on energy point Pericardium 6 eased nauseous feeling.

Light spritz of geranium hydrosol felt cooling and rejuvenating. Keeping cool and hydrated is especially important in hot temperatures.

What are your favourite aromatic allies during this hot time of the year?

Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare essential oil is a great match after traveling or heavy meals, whether you have celebrated Eid or participated in a summer barbeques during this weekend.🙂

I have been using Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare essential oil to invigorate circulation, energy levels and digestion. After couple of applications with Fennel essential oil I have felt more energetic, fortified and able to focus on tasks at hand.

How I used Fennel's circulating, sweet and pungent aroma energy for transformation:

1. In inhalation from cupped hands
2.on top of my head on energy point Governing vessel 20 for clearing and calming the mind
3. on energy point Stomach 36, about hand with below the knee to settle digestion and energize
4. on energy point Kidney 3 in the inner ankle for grounding and strengthening
5. In a warm compress on abdomen for stimulating digestion

If you don't have the essential oil, get some fennel seeds from your supermarket and chew them. They freshen your breath, invigorate your energy and improve digestion.

Notice that use of Fennel essential oil is not the best match for you, if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, have sensitive skin, suffer from endometriosis, epilepsy, kidney problems/stones, cancer or take blood thinning drugs.

My Eid celebrations have included fun family time, lots of lovely food and sweets, and several outings to local gardens and parks. Lovely break, Alhamdulillah.

Today is the last day and last Friday of June and the last day of Eid Al-Adha and I wanted to diffuse something simple, refreshing, clearing and light.

Lemon essential oil with its sweet, invigorating and expansive lemony aroma is perfect and it was also among the oils in my intuitive selection. Breathe it in and you can feel the clarifying and invigorating effect almost immediately! Brilliant!

Let the baraka of aromatic plants to nurture your heart and lighten up your soul.

Have a blessed Friday! 💛

"Above the lowly plants it towers,
The fennel with its yellow flowers,
and in earlier age than ours,
was gifted with wondrous powers,
lost vision to restore.

It gave new strengy, and fearless mood;
and gladiators, fierce and rude,
mingled it in their daily food;
and he who battled and subdued,
a wreath of fennel wore."

While looking for information of fennel I discovered that it's name comes from the Latin, foenum, a variety of fragrant hay. It is an ancient medicinal herb that was thought to offer total cure and make people younger, stronger and healthier, so it's fortifying affect has been appreciated since time immemorial. Fennel is a lovely looking plant too, the flowers tower high up against the blue sky, just like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, an American poet describes.

Marking the longest daylight time of the year, the traditional Midsummer bonfires burn today and throughout the weekend, lighting up the nightless summer nights in the Nordic countries.

Summer is our warmest season, time of the energy of the fire. Nowadays we often associate fire with destruction and punishment, so it is important to remember the blessings in it. Lighting up natural incense always brings forth these positive sides of fire to me. Fire gives life joy, warmth and also maturity. The emotion associated with fire phase is happiness.

Fire is associated with movement, intensity and also with excess of energy. Too much fire manifests itself in headaches, dry mucous, thirst and fever. Extreme fire can lead to hyperactivity, inflammation of the joints, infections, diarrhea, constipation, anxiety and insomnia.

Balanced fire element enriches your life, helps you enjoy your relationships and opens you outwards to be more receptive to others.

Fire element organs in your body are heart, small intestine, pericardium, and the the triple heater, which regulates internal body temperature.

My relatives in the north have been complaining about the heat of the summer, they are not used to it. Too much heat can be also straining to the heart.
To maintain healthy levels of fire, protect yourself by staying out of hot midday sun and drink plenty of fluids, cool footbath or shower can feel great too.
Enjoy the blessings of summer season!

My first intuitive choice for gaining back balance, focus and strength after traveling was the essential oil of Sweet Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare. This culinary plant we have had growing also in Alkanz Estate garden. I love the pungent, sweet aroma of the seeds and the essential oil extracted from them, infact the whole plant has a similar anise-like aroma.

If you scroll down my earlier posts you find a description of Fennel essential oil mentioning, how it can encourage your body's natural detox process, balance fluid retention and help to break up cellulitis. I mentioned it can be used also for pain relief for aching joints and particularly effective with helping to ease digestive discomforts. This oil is mentally stimulating, helping you to focus and get things done.

Looking at energetics you can find, that the sweet and pungent Fennel essential oil has stimulating, circulating and warming aroma energy. This explains why it is excellent for digestive system and repelling dampness and dispelling heavy and sluggish feeling. It is also known to increase courage, stamina, motivation and clarity of mind, activating energy flow and bringing fortifying harmony.

Looks like a good match for what I need!

After a lovely break and a week of travel I've returned, feeling happy, exhausted and totally thrown out of routine. After sleeping the biggest exhaustion away I wondered how I could get back to "normal" life without feeling scattered and unfocused for too long - there is so many things to catch up with...

The longer I have worked with essential oils I have noticed we often intuitively pick up ones to use on ourselves that are the most beneficial at that particular moment without too much study or pondering. Without hesitation I used my intuition again and selected the following oils to work with:

Fennel, Foenicum vulgare
Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
Lemon, Citrus limon
Cedarwood, Cedrus atlantica

In my posts, InshaAllah, I will look at each essential oil to see if these completely intuitive choices actually make any logical sense in a case of post-travel exhaustion and explain how I used the aroma energy medicine they offer for my wellbeing.

Have a lovely summer Monday! 🌻

Scent offers you a perfect way to refresh and change the energy, that affects your moods, feelings, spirit and physical body.

To bring the sense of peace, light and lightness of being, I have chosen today Frankincense sacra, Rose Otto and Bergamot Mint to be diffused in the oil burner. Inhaling the sweet, resiny and sparkly minty notes of the scent tunes me into the present moment, Friday prayer and what really matters to me, I connect also into the blessings of abundance and joy of summer around us, Alhamdulillah. Outdoors looks glorious, sun is shining and it is warm, Alhamdulillah.

In Central Asia where rose originates from, the Tree of Life or Tree of Immortality is presented sometimes as a rose bush, symbolising the source of all life on earth, God, the "Beloved Divine", Allah SWT.

Rose is mentioned also In the Quran, ˹When the heavens will split apart, becoming rose-red like ˹burnt˺ oil! Then which of your Lord’s favours will you deny?" Surah Ar-Rahman, 37 - 38

Prophet Muhammad SAWS is quoted to have said, "The rose is the lord of the flowers of paradise." The family and friends of the Prophet SAWS said that he smelt like roses and for this reason the rose has been associated with Prophet Muhammad and is sometimes used as a symbol for him.

In the mystical Muslim tradition known as Sufism, the exquisite flower, attached to a long thorny stem, symbolizes the path to Allah SWT. What a beautiful metaphor!

May the sweet and refreshing scent of rose serve as a reminder for all the love and blessings showered on you during your path on earth and beyond.🌹

"Here is the perfect book for the advanced aromatherapist who is interested in applying energetics within their aromatic practice. Holmes provided not only the introduction into aromatic energetics, but then follows up with oil energetics in Materia Aromatica. The crowning glory is all the safety information given in methods of essential oil delivery."
- Inga Wieser, President of AIA

Aromatica, A Clinical Guide to Essential Oil Therapeutics Volume 2 by Peter Holmes with Volume 1 explain clearly the fragrance energetics, integrating fragrance qualities to principles of Chinese medicine but also integrate essential oil therapeutics to the vitalistic approach and diagnostic principles of Chinese medicine, Greek-Galenic or - as I know it- Unani Tibb medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.

Reading this book is like starting a new chapter - quite an undertaking really. Everything you already know about essential oil chemistry and therapeutics will help you forward.

Combining the knowledge of therapeutic actions and tropism of essential oils to the understanding their vitalistic functions, how the energetics of an aroma impact energy circulation, how to recognize and treat different imbalances of terrain and willingness to further develop clinical skills, such as sensitivity, observation, heart centered care and presence has a great potential to transform your work and practice for good.

30/05/2023

I have been working quite a bit with Black Spruce essential oil and I was asked, does it smell similar to Norwegian Spruce and can they be used interchangeably. I had no idea, got curious myself, got a bottle of both and asked my assistant nose to make a little smell test with me.

Black Spruce, Picea mariana, is a North American species of spruce tree in the pine family. It is widespread across Canada and Northern parts of the United States. The oil we used us distilled in Canada.

Picea abies, the Norway spruce or European spruce, is a species of spruce growing in Nordic countries, Central and Eastern Europe. Many of you recognize it as the "Christmas tree." The oil we used is distilled in Austria.

Both essential oils offer you wonderful restorative and revitalizing Aroma Energy Medicine.
If you need help with loss of motivation, low self-esteem, depression, low self-confidence, indecision, loss of strength and vitality, low stamina, weakness, burnout or chronic infections - especially in your respiratory system - spruce of any kind is definitely an oil you should have in your self-care kit.

Our smell test was done using pure essential oil, inhaled from a fragrance strip 3 times in 15 minutes intervals. Our observations were identical:
Black Spruce seemed woodier and softer, the aroma was more earthy and rounded than the one of Norway Spruce. Norway Spruce has sharper coniferous top notes, at first they felt quite harsh. The aroma is very pungent, camphoraceous and strongly pine like, very invigorating and opens the airways.

Energetically Black Spruce feels refreshing and inviting, encouraging self-reflection, while Norway Spruce is more direct and decisive, showing you the way.

Have you worked with these oils and what was your impression of them?

"But the heart has its own memory and I have forgotten nothing." - Albert Camus, The Fall

Scent can affect us in multiple ways, our physical health, emotional wellness, cognitive abilities and spiritual awareness. Like all my colleagues, I have studied chemistry, olfaction and the pathways aroma molecules enter our body and been in awe.

The most profound experiences and ideas I have got from the aromatic plants themselves. A while ago I stood in my English garden looking at the roses we had to cut down in order to replace some fence panels. These were the fragrant roses my husband planted for me years ago. I remember the utter grief in summer 2015 when I realised I could no more detect their scent. My heart was totally shattered, the missing aroma lead to a feeling of total disconnection from everything. I had to look for complementary therapies for healing.

That experience and observing others in similar situation has made me to believe that we store deepest, most meaningful experiences connected to specific scents not just in our minds but also in our hearts. The scent of your children, your mother's hand cream, the forest of your childhood, the scent of the bread taken out of the oven...they are all in your heart's cellular memory, literally. A functioning sense of smell provides reinforcement to the heart and keeps these memories alive and vivid.

"In the new field of neurocardiology, for example, scientists have discovered that the heart possesses its own intrinsic nervous system—a network of nerves so functionally sophisticated as to earn the description of a “heart brain.” Containing over 40,000 neurons, this “little brain” gives the heart the ability to independently sense, process information, make decisions, and even to demonstrate a type of learning and memory. In essence, it appears that the heart is truly an intelligent system."

If you have further information on this subject, don't hesitate to share.

Sharing is caring. Aromas inspire people all over the world. They can invigorate energy flow, improve wellbeing and bring new joy and enjoyment to life.

In the pages of the newest IFPA's In Essence journal professional aromatherapists share their experiences, knowledge and newest research about essential oils and aromatic plants.

In the Spring/Summer 2023 issue I already spotted several highly interesting articles:riveroll writing about personal exploration through fragrance, reflecting on fragrance memories, and jennifer peace rhind exploring Omumbiri , deep diving in Western Australian sandalwood and Connie Yim Ling describing two treatments with combining TCM and essential oils.

Heart's Delight Aroma Energy Blend offers you fragrant energy for heart centered mindfulness work. I have been asked to post a recipe for a blend and this is one of my personal favourites. I hope you find it useful.

This beautiful blend opens the heart center and enhances the energy flow, allowing you to experience a sensation of peace, joy and renewed confidence to face the daily challenges in your life.

How to make?
Fractionated coconut oil 80% with a blend of following essential oils:

Rose Otto - Rosa damascene 5%
Bergamot FCF- Citrus bergamia 5%
Orange - Citrus sinensis 5%
Neroli - Citrus aurantium 3%
Lemon verbena - Lippia citriodora or
Spearmint - Mentha spicata 2%

How to use?
Sit or stand up comfortably in a tranquil, private place. Hold the bottle near you and set your intention to connect with your heart.

Place couple of drops of the blend on the palm of your hands, rub your hands together and cup them over your nose.

Close your eyes and inhale the scent mindfully while breathing in and out.

*************
Use topical application as follows:

Apply the blend with your index or/and middle finger on energy points on your heart, on the base of your throat, on forehead between your eye brows and on top of your head using light touch.

Hold each point gently, inhaling peacefully. Feel how your connection to the aroma deepens.
*************

Feel the calmness of this beautiful moment and
let harmony and serenity to settle in.

Move your hand over your heart, place your other hand on top and stay cocooning the heart for a while.

Let go of anger, hurt and regrets about the past and anxieties and worries about the future.
Feel the release.

Breathe in and out and feel the transformation in your energetic state. Open your eyes.

Feel blessed and say thanks.
Kiss your hands, move them up to the air above your head, drawing a big heart and bring your hands down on your lower dantian, below your navel. Hold them there for a while, taking couple of deep breaths, smile and continue your day.

Lovely scented lilac is always a delight to smell. This is one of those blooms you need to meet in person, the aroma is difficult to obtain.

The lilac, Syringa vulgaris and other species of Syringa, is a shrub originating in Persia and Middle East.
Lilac was brought in Europe in the Middle Ages, and is now a common ornamental shrub in gardens all over Europe.

My aunties had lilacs growing in their gardens in Finland and it is one of the scent memories of the summers in my childhood. Beautiful! 💜
