[TOBE030] the head in the Moon
COMMUNITY ART. Here is a sneak-peek of a fabulous art installation from last summer’s AUM that is starting to make waves at art exhibitions around the world.

Artist Juan Nicolas Urquiza (Nico) started his 'AUM Universe' project two years ago at AUM Festival. If you visited the Kānuka stage you would have seen his table and chairs under the trees on the pathway to the stage. It was a spot where people would sit down and cut items out of the stacks of magazines to make collages of inspired juxtaposition.

Nico took the creations of the hundreds of contributors during the festival and scanned, then cleverly deconstructed them. They were then reassembled by visual artist Fernando Notari into a series of flowing animations. Nico also composed unique music for each of the stories resulting in seven audio-visual short films uniting the creative ideas of those who sat down at his table under the trees for a chat.

Please enjoy this preview of 'Spiral Sighs;' from the AUM Universe collection. The full videos coming soon, as well as an album of each of the artworks created during AUM Festival. This is the first of the community art projects we have coming in summer which families, adults and children alike can be part of. Peace.

Shango (also transcribed as Sango, Xangô, Chango and in other variants)is an important orisha (god or demigod) of Yoruba mythology. It is mainly associated with the Oyo ethnic group, of which it is a mythical ancestor. It is a powerful deity, associated with fire and thunder, and also plays an important role in African-American cults derived from the Yoruba religion, such as candomblé, santeria and voodoo. Yoruba oral tradition describes Shango as king of the Oyo Empire, son of the founding king Oranian and his wife Torosi. Historically, this would place his life around the 15th century. His reign is remembered as a time of great prosperity, during which the empire grew to unify all of the Yoruba people. In the mythological and religious transposition, this prosperity is reflected in the typical magnificence of the Shango cult rituals, rich in different colors, shapes and symbols. Shango is associated with fire, lightning and thunder; he has a violent and vindictive character, hunter and looter, virile and courageous; he is an avenger, and punishes liars, thieves and criminals. For these characteristics, both in colonial and post-colonial times Shango was frequently considered as the symbol of the struggle of blacks against oppression by whites.
