BMG mourns the loss of legendary English singer and actress Marianne Faithfull, who passed away on 30 January 2025 at the age of 78.
Born in Hampstead, London, Faithfull achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her UK Top 5 single ‘As Tears Go By’. Her debut studio album, Marianne Faithfull, was a huge success, further elevating her profile. She also made her mark in film, starring in I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and Hamlet (1969).
After a period away from the spotlight, Faithfull made a triumphant comeback with the critically acclaimed 1979 studio album Broken English. The album, often regarded as her "definitive recording", earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Throughout her career, Faithfull received numerous accolades, including the World Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2009 Women's World Awards. In 2011, she was named a Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of her cultural contributions.
Alistair Norbury, President – Repertoire & Marketing UK, APAC & Europe, said, "Marianne Faithfull was a true icon—an unconventional artist of extraordinary depth, resilience, and creativity. Her oeuvre spanned decades, constantly evolving yet always unmistakably her own. We at BMG are honored to have been part of her journey and to continue celebrating her legacy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who were inspired by her remarkable life and artistry.”
BMG proudly represents some of the recording rights of Marianne Faithfull’s music catalog, including Vagabond Ways (1999) and Kissin’ Time (2002). BMG also served as the label for her two most recent studio albums, Negative Capability (2018) and She Walks in Beauty (2021), as well as The Montreux Years (2021), a collection of some of Marianne’s most celebrated performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
