kookbooks – poetry as life form
kookbooks is a Berlin based lab for poetry as life form and an independent publishing house curious to innovative literary forms and well-known for its excellent manufacturing and designs. Founded in 2003 by poet Daniela Seel and graphic artist and illustrator Andreas Toepfer, it emerged from the artists’ network KOOK and has a sister music label, KOOK-label. Our
program runs about six titles a year ranging from experimental poetry and essays to witty novels and – even bilingual – picture books for children. Scarily, ever since we began almost every author published attracted broad attention and was honoured with literary awards, as was kookbooks itself when it received the Kurt-Wolff-Förderpreis for publishers in 2006. In 2007 publisher Daniela Seel also received the Horst-Bienek-Förderpreis of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts for her efforts for poetry. Nonetheless kookbooks still is a precarious venture and we wonder if we ever will be able to make our living on it. Among our authors there are Daniel Falb, Christian Hawkey, Martina Hefter, Hendrik Jackson, Johannes Jansen, Pierangelo Maset, Steffen Popp, Monika Rinck, Annika Scheffel, Sabine Scho, Michael Stavaric, and Uljana Wolf.
