"Live" Poster Series wins Graphis Gold

Throughout the ages the number four has symbolized solidity, wholeness and universality. The intersectionality of the cross moving in four directions and yet returning to a centre is an obvious metaphor. Four letter words that embody proactive intention can make a similar statement — and there are many of them — “love” “look” “feel” “fuse”. The verb “live” also has four letters and in a way embodies all of the others. The goal of this poster series was to communicate this dynamic in an abstract form. Using yellow and light blue as base colours symbolizing dynamism and optimism posters played with layered visual themes evoked by the four-letter words chosen.

Canada Day 2024

“Cultural appropriation is an act of immaturity. Canada needs to grow out of it.”
― Jesse Wente, Unreconciled: Family, Truth, and Indigenous Resistance

“When racism doesn’t harm you personally, noticing it requires conscious effort, or at least empathy — just as acknowledging that you benefit from racism requires you to acknowledge its existence.”

"LIve" is a Four-Letter Word

"Almost from prehistoric times, the number four was employed to signify what was solid, what could be touched and felt. Its relationship to the cross (four points) made it an outstanding symbol of wholeness and universality, a symbol which drew all to itself". Where lines of latitude and longitude intersect, they divide the earth into four proportions.”

“This is the power of art: The power to transcend our own self-interest, our solipsistic zoom-lens on life, and relate to the world and each other with more integrity, more curiosity, more wholeheartedness.”
— Maria Popova

“Whether peace is to be reached only after unimaginable horrors precipitated by humanity’s stubborn clinging to old patterns of behaviour, or is to be embraced now by an act of consultative will, is the choice before all who inhabit the earth. At this critical juncture when the intractable problems confronting nations have been fused into one common concern for the whole world, failure to stem the tide of conflict and disorder would be unconscionably irresponsible.”
— The Promise of World Peace

“For the tongue is a smoldering fire, and excess of speech a deadly poison. Material fire consumeth the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devoureth both heart and soul. The force of the former lasteth but for a time, whilst the effects of the latter endureth a century.”
—Bahá’u’lláh

“How would your life be different if…You walked away from gossip and verbal defamation? Let today be the day…You speak only the good you know of other people and encourage others to do the same.”
― Steve Maraboli

― Confucius, The Analects

“We need to be the kind of person whose name pops into the minds of others when they are asked about those who encourage them.”
― Kent Kraning

“What we say with our lips is the true reading of where our heart is. Our words are able to start a fire that can burn down a forest or it can start a meaningful blaze that can empower a person to become more than they thought they could be.”

“My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddlestrings and harps, drums and tamboura I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.”
― Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

“My soul is impatient with itself, as with a bothersome child; its restlessness keeps growing and is forever the same. Everything interests me, but nothing holds me. I attend to everything, dreaming all the while. […]. I’m two, and both keep their distance — Siamese twins that aren’t attached.”
― Fernando Pessoa , The Book of Disquiet

― Vincent van Gogh, The Letters of Vincent van Gogh

“Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an’ tho’ a cloud’s shape nor hue nor size don’t stay the same, it’s still a cloud an’ so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud’s blowed from or who the soul’ll be ‘morrow? Only Sonmi the east an’ the west an’ the compass an’ the atlas, yay, only the atlas o’ clouds.”
― David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

“Words! What power they hold. Once they have rooted in your psyche, it is difficult to escape them. Words can shape the future of a child and destroy the existence of an adult.
Words are powerful. Be careful how you use them because once you have pronounced them, you cannot remove the scar they leave behind.”

“The earth is still turning...
The seasons enter,
play their part, bow and move on
every year, one to the next,
never overstaying their welcome

Hatred is corrosive. The exponential rise in hate crimes against the Jewish people worldwide is indicative of a deeper malaise which is rearing its ugly head yet again spurred on by the relentless and frenzied expressions of outrage fanned on by the algorithms of social media. Just the other day I witnessed supporters of the atrocities committed by Hamas tearing down posters drawing attention to the plight of the Jewish hostages in Gaza — and this in front of the Bahá’í Centre in Toronto — a community whose members in Iran are currently experiencing a renewed wave of arrests and persecution of their own spurred on by a similarly backward mentality. “Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.” (Maya Angelou)

We have been squandering the earth’s finite resources as well as human resources for self-destructive purposes for millennia. Without approaching the myriad challenges facing the international community in a unified and peaceful fashion we are doomed.

Peace Please

"For the first time in history it is possible for everyone to view the entire planet, with all its myriad diversified peoples, in one perspective. World peace is not only possible but inevitable. It is the next stage in the evolution of this planet—in the words of one great thinker, “the planetization of mankind”.
Whether peace is to be reached only after unimaginable horrors precipitated by humanity’s stubborn clinging to old patterns of behaviour, or is to be embraced now by an act of consultative will, is the choice before all who inhabit the earth. At this critical juncture when the intractable problems confronting nations have been fused into one common concern for the whole world, failure to stem the tide of conflict and disorder would be unconscionably irresponsible."

June 18th marked 40 years since 10 Iranian Bahá’í women in the city of Shiraz were hanged for refusing to renounce their commitment to the vision of a world where women are equal to men, a world free of the prejudice and calcifying effect of religious dogma that has for so many centuries held the people of Iran back from achieving their full potential. Little did anyone believe, at the time, that a generation later, the war against the women of Iran would still be raging and that we would be witnessing the struggle of millions to achieve some modicum of freedom to make their own choices when it comes to the way they express personal beliefs, dress, work and play. We stand in solidarity with these women (and men) — “OurStoryIsOne”.
