“Jim Thorpe showcased unparalleled athleticism and he transcended racial barriers…”

President Joe Biden recognized Native American athlete Jim Thorpe May 3, posthumously awarding the Olympian with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

It’s the highest civilian honour in the United States. Biden said he grew up hearing about Thorpe, “the greatest athlete of all time”, from his grandfather.

‘Emotional’ journey to site of former Hamilton TB sanatorium, cemetery

During the 1940s to the 1960s tuberculosis peaked among Inuit communities with Canada shipping thousands of Inuit south to be treated in sanatoria.

They were cut off from their language, their culture, their homes and their loved ones.

Inuit survivors made a trip back to Hamilton last week to visit the site where the Mountain Sanatorium was once located to provide some closure for the trauma they endured there.
