Cameron with a 20lb Lahontan trout
The Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi) is a subspecies of cutthroat trout native to the Lahontan Basin in the western United States. This species was historically found in a variety of waters, including rivers, lakes, and streams, within the region, particularly in Nevada, eastern California, and southern Oregon. They are named after ancient Lake Lahontan, which once covered much of the basin during the Pleistocene epoch.
Key features of the Lahontan cutthroat trout include:
Size: They are one of the largest subspecies of cutthroat trout, capable of reaching lengths over 30 inches and weights exceeding 20 pounds, particularly in lake environments.
Coloration: Like other cutthroat trout, they have a distinctive red or orange slash mark on the underside of the jaw. They typically display a greenish or silver body with black spots concentrated on their dorsal side and tails.
Habitat: They thrive in both lake and riverine environments. The species has adapted to a range of conditions, from cold, high-mountain streams to alkaline, saline lakes like Pyramid Lake.

Gigantic Murray cod! Murray Cod are a member of the family Percichthyidae and have a relatively large, elongate and deep body. They have small eyes and a short snout, which has a distinct concave profile. The mouth is large with a protruding lower jaw. Murray Cod possess a cream to olive green colour with dark grey to greenish blotches over the head and body. The ventral surface (belly) is generally white in colour. These cod are voracious feeders and predators. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, water birds, frogs, turtles and terrestrial animals such as mice and snakes.
Size
Murray Cod reach a maximum size of about 1.8 m and 113 kg.
Distribution
Murray Cod, also referred to as cod or codfish, were once abundant throughout the Murray-Darling river system, but overfishing and environmental changes have drastically reduced its numbers. The species has been selectively stocked in other river systems in NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, but has generally failed to establish itself in those areas. Murray Cod generally prefer slow flowing, turbid water in streams and rivers, favouring deeper water around boulders, undercut banks, overhanging vegetation and logs. Small numbers are still present in the Nepean River and Yarra River.

The Fire Fox, a rare variation of the red fox with a melatonin alteration, constitutes less than one% of the red fox population. Renowned for their intelligence, these unique foxes can be trained to hunt small animals like mice and rabbits.
Despite their rarity, sightings have been reported in diverse locations across the globe, including the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Norway, and Japan.

Drink water where your horse drinks, a horse will never drink bad water. Make your bed where the cat sleeps peacefully. Eat fruit touched by a worm. It fearlessly collects mushrooms on which insects perch. Plant a tree dug by the mole. Dig a hole where the birds hide from the heat. Sleep and wake up at the same time as the birds, you will reap the golden grains of life. Eat more greens, you will have stronger legs and a resilient heart like the spirit of the forests. Look at the sky more often and talk less so that silence can enter your heart. and your soul is calm and your life is peaceful

The Iron Lady
80-year-old woman completes annual 600-mile trek with her pony and dog
Every year, Jane Dotchin packs her saddlebags and sets off on an epic journey from her home near Hexham, Northumberland, up to Inverness, Scotland.
Since 1972, Jane, 80, has been heading on this annual trip on her 13-year-old horse, Diamond, travelling 600 miles on horseback.
This time, she began her journey on August 31, with her disabled Jack Russell, Dinky, for company as she covers between 15 and 20 miles a day.
The trip sees Jane carrying everything she needs on her back, including her tent, food, and a few key belongings.
After that initial journey, she caught the taste for the open road, and travelled to visit friends near Fort Augustus, near Loch Ness, Highlands, every autumn since.
Her epic journey usually takes around seven weeks, depending on weather, and Jane uses it as a chance to pop in and say hi to people she has met over the years.
She sustains herself on porridge, oatcakes, and cheese, and doesnโ€™t need much electricity as she has an old mobile phone with a battery that lasts six weeks.

Itโ€™s called a Walking Palm Tree because it does actually walk. When it chooses a location to go towards, it grows new roots in that direction and lets the trailing roots die back. This continues inch by inch, and it can travel up to twenty feet in a year.

Rest well big guy ๐Ÿ’”
Our Dogwood family is reeling from the sudden loss of our feral sanctuary Wolfdog, Malachi, to what was likely a splenic bleed.
Malachi came to us as an adolescent 9 years ago, completely unsocialized and having missed that absolutely critical period of human handling in his early months of puppyhood when canines bond with humans. He matured at well over 100 pounds and could never be handled in any normal manner but when he chose to make contact and offer his big fuzzy butt for a scratch we were always honored. We ran him into a chute for his annual vaccinations and sedated him for neuter and any needed vet care.
Sometimes playful, sometimes grumpy, sometimes affectionate, occasionally derpy and once in a while scary, Mal was a part of the family and we loved him. He loved his pack and in his younger years adored playing with other dogs but as he matured he was happy just hanging out with his girls, all also seniors.
Rescuing Malachi led to tracing his history to a wolfdog hoarding/puppy mill situation with literally hundreds of feral and semi-feral dogs and wolfdogs. Dogwood worked together with rescues all over the country and eventually the place was shut down. Our much loved feral senior wolfdogs Anj and Rae (both have now crossed over) came to us when the place closed and lived their last years in peace and comfort with us.
We take comfort in the happy life Malachi had with us in spite of his challenges and will be sharing more memories of our boy in the coming days.
Making a difference one animal at a time.

This is a ๐—™๐—น๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต up close. They can propel themselves out of water at speeds of more than 56 km/h. Once in the air, their rigid โ€œwingsโ€ allow them to glide for up to 200 meters.
Flying fish, belonging to the family Exocoetidae, are remarkable marine creatures known for their unique ability to glide above the water's surface. These fish are equipped with unusually large pectoral fins that function like wings, allowing them to leap out of the water and glide for considerable distances to escape predators.
They are primarily found in warm oceanic waters around the world, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Typically, flying fish can glide up to 200 meters at a speed of about 60 kilometers per hour, using their tails to generate the necessary thrust by rapidly beating the water surface before takeoff.
In addition to their distinctive gliding capability, flying fish have adapted to a variety of oceanic environments, often seen in both coastal areas and the open sea. They feed on a diet of plankton and small marine organisms, making them an integral part of the ocean's food web.
Their unique behavior not only aids in evasion from predators like dolphins and larger fish but also makes them a subject of interest for humans, leading to their depiction in folklore and their role in various culinary traditions across different cultures. Their fascinating ability to glide and their ecological importance highlight the incredible adaptability and diversity of marine life.
