Plug in to the new Unplugged
Story Brooke Jacobson
SANDBAG’s signature Unplugged event is receiving a glow-up and becoming a vital fundraiser for the community service.
Rebranded as SANDBAG Live: Dinner and a Show, the monthly event now offers a meal and entertainment.
The charity’s team leader, Kym De Thierry, said she was grateful to the volunteers who had kept Unplugged going for such a long time.
“Our previous volunteers, who held that space for so long and gave up their time, were so amazing, and while some of them are now moving on, some are staying with us as well,” she said.
“We had some new volunteers come in, some new community members, and we thought it was an opportunity to change up Unplugged.
“Initially we put on a night with food from the Shelley Inn, we made it a themed night, and it was quite successful – we had 90 people come along.”
The new monthly event will feature a buffet dinner, along with entertainment, which could be anything including a band, a comedian, or an open mic night.
The first Live night will be 7 June and includes a delicious Thai meal. The cost is $20 per person or $15 for pensioners. A cash bar is also open during the event.
“We wanted to make this event more of a fundraiser for SANDBAG,” Kym said.
“Money raised goes to our programs that includes our drop-in centre, domestic and family violence support, skilling for Queensland programs – any additional funds we can raise for those programs helps local people.
“People are struggling and it’s not just the people you can see visibly in our community who are struggling, there’s a lot of hidden risks. We have women sleeping in cars, the cost of living and housing crises are impacting the 4017 community.
“We’re seeing the continued impacts of COVID now, there is real struggle out there.
Kym welcomed anyone in the community who had time or skills to contribute to SANDBAG.
“If you’re a local tradie, and you have some time to donate to helping revamp the community centre, we want to hear from you,” she said.
“If you love music, or you’ve got entertainment industry experience and would like to help with SANDBAG Live, we’d love to hear from you.
“We want to keep the 4017 safe and sustainable and we’re asking the community to help us with that.”
