Mining Green

Mining Green Mining Green is a podcast where we share inspiring stories of the mining industry leading the way to a net-zero future

On the Mining Green podcast, we share inspiring stories of how the mining industry is leading the way to a net-zero future. We cover the technologies that will enable the transition (think battery-electric vehicles, green hydrogen, and renewable energy for a start), the challenges that need to be overcome, the benefits that will arise, and how the mining industry can lead the way towards a cleaner future.

Nussir ASA is developing a fully electric underground copper mine in the north of Norway. Øystein is keen to take the mining industry in a cleaner, greener direction with their electric mine powered by 100% renewable energy, and they expect to produce one of the world's purest copper concentrates.

They are being supported by Enova SF grants to make the expensive electric equipment more affordable, otherwise, the mine might not have been viable. Epiroc is to supply the heavy mining equipment, with decisions still to be made on support equipment.

Congrats to the SRK Consulting team on getting the feasibility study to this stage.

Brett spoke with Asha Black (from MaxMine) recently. Listen along in the latest episode of the Mining Green

The focus of our chat was MaxMine Carbon which helps open-pit mines reduce their carbon emissions by up to 20%, by reducing their diesel fuel usage in their haul fleets (whilst maintaining production).

Worth a look for anyone working in the open-pit mining space to help save on diesel usage, carbon emissions, and operating costs.

Their Carbon Calculator is a great free tool to benchmark how much room your mine has to improve.

Great to hear from an , company based in our home city of

Evaluating Green Technology for the mining industry is what we do.

We work with mining companies to evaluate the implementation of green technology on their mine sites. Think technology evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, and desktop studies.

Green technologies can lead to many benefits:

➢ Reduced diesel emissions
➢ Healthier & safer work environment for your workforce
➢ Reduced GHG emissions
➢ Better productivity

We work with our associates such as Mayhew Performance LTD. to deliver projects.

Contact Brett to have a chat about how we can help evaluate green technology options for your mine.

Anglo American launched their hydrogen-powered haul truck a few days ago at their Mogalakwena mine in .
It's a great first step in their goal for 2040.

In this article, Brett Dunstone discusses the options for large open-pit fleets (particularly hydrogen & battery electric with dynamic charging).

Both these options have problems.

With hydrogen power, it's whether enough can be produced to power the trucks.

Anglo American hasn't mentioned how much hydrogen their trucks would require and whether they can produce enough green hydrogen to meet their demands.

With battery-electric, the problem is the size and weight of the batteries required and the need for dynamic charging that doesn't affect haul cycle times.

Hopefully, solutions to the charging problem are coming soon via the Charge On Challenge, which is still ongoing. Some innovative solutions have been proposed by the likes of ABB and Bluvein.

The future of large "carbon-free" truck haulage will unlikely come from a single "silver bullet" but instead will come from a number of different solutions (ie. hydrogen, battery-electric, IPCC) that are tailored to the local conditions.

FYI, Anglo American wasn't the first to build a hydrogen-powered haul truck either. Fortescue Future Industries showcased its solution in late 2021. However, it would be great to hear how it's progressing as there's been little news since.

Another episode of the Mining Green is live!
In this episode, Brett speaks to Marco Terruzzin from Energy Vault about their gravity energy storage system.

A very exciting technology that we should see rolling out in 2022, with many benefits compared to other energy storage alternatives, such as batteries & pumped hydro.

✔ Low cost (upfront CAPEX & ongoing OPEX)
✔ Highly scalable (GWh+)
✔ Flexible
✔ No degradation in the storage medium
✔ Safe & sustainable (energy storage bricks can be made out of locally sourced materials, even waste materials)

Our first episode of the Mining Green podcast is live!

In this episode, Brett speaks to Graeme Stanway (Slate Advisory) about the Electric Mine Consortium (EMC).

The EMC was set up as a collaboration between mining companies, OEMs, and technology providers to help facilitate the transition to an electric mine.

Members include Gold Fields Australia, South32, OZ Minerals, IGO Ltd, Sandvik, Epiroc, Newcrest Mining Limited, Blackstone Minerals Limited, Barminco Ltd, Energy Vault, Zeroautomotive, Zenith Energy Pty Limited and VivoPower.

A lot of ground was covered in the interview; why the EMC was set up, how it operates, and its attraction to its members.

We also covered higher-level topics such as fostering innovative & collaborative thinking, applying carbon pricing in studies, and rethinking mining for electrification. And in the highlight video above, we discuss the appetite for decarbonisation in the mining industry.
