By Tanaka Madochi
CHINHOYI-Government has availed $125 million this year to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development for the empowerment of women and the community.
The funds will be distributed among the ten provinces through the Women Development Fund which avails loans to groups of women and the Zimbabwe Community Development Fund which gives loans to groups that include both men and women, undertaking various projects.
Speaking at a woman in business consultative meeting in Chinhoyi recently the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Director Mrs Tariro Chipepera urged women to apply for the loans under the two funds and do projects that enhance production in the country.
“In choosing projects let us try to deal with those that are more into production so that we can improve our country’s production,” she said.
The loans are supposed to paid back over 12 months, attracting a 10 percent interest per annum.
“When we are looking at vision 2030 yedu, ngatiitei ma businesses ariinto production, kwetezvekunohodhaitai ma business ekuchengetahuku, kugadzira ma detergents nemamwewoariinto production,” said MrsChipepera.
Those who want to apply for the loans were urged to submit their business proposals at district level before they are forwarded to the province until they reach the national level for verification and approval.
Last year the ministry received $65m for the funds and managed to fund 13 groups in Mashonaland West two of which are doing exceptionally well.
At the meeting the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Dr Stembiso Nyoni said her ministry is willing and ready to fund women in different types of businesses in Zimbabwe.
She said they are moving around the provinces to encourage women in production so that when they hold a national indaba everyone is aware of what they should do.
“I’m sure you are all aware of the vision of our President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) for 2030, that this country must be middle income and madzimai we thought if we don’t galvanize women to engage in production and meaningful businesses that will be a pipe dream for women, so we are here so that we galvanize you towards 2030, so that when 2030 comes the women are major players in that middle income,” said Cde Nyoni.
Women from different business organisations such as Arts and Craft, Young Women for ED, Fish industry, disabled representatives, CUT Women Entrepreneurship Development Unit, Mining, Piggery Association and others highlighted the challenges that they are facing and requested the ministry’s assistance.
The challenges include capital, registration of companies, lack of market places, work places, exhibition centers and licenses among others.
The Chairperson of the Mining, Vimbai Chipangura said, “takabvumidzwaku miner zvicherwazvatinogonana President veduasiit is taking too long for one to get a mining license, tinokumbirarubatsirorwenyuHonorable Minister.”
The women in business were told that their challenges had been heard and the ministry will do its best to help solve them.
