KENYA PARLY BANS KK SUIT

Kenya's parliament has banned the wearing of a suit, named after the late Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, within the building.

Speaker of Parliament Moses Wetangula said Kaunda suits, as well as traditional African clothes, were not welcome.

Kenyan President William Ruto often wears them on official occasions.

This has made the Kaunda suit - a safari jacket with matching trousers - popular with the political class.

The suit is named after the late Zambian president who loved wearing them and made them popular among political leaders across sub-Saharan Africa.

The suit, which is also referred to as the Mao Zedong suit, is often collarless and short-sleeved.

On Tuesday, Mr Wetangula said his decision to ban the suit was due to emerging fashion trends that threatened the established parliamentary dress code.

The Kaunda suit has been allowed previously in parliament and some MPs have been known for often wearing them.

Mr Wetangula acknowledged that these suits had been "somehow tolerated" in the past but that it was now time to stop that amid a threat to the parliamentary dress code.

The Kaunda suit has trended on social media in Kenya in recent times, after Mr Ruto started wearing them on official occasions.

The banning of the suit has elicited mixed reactions on social media, with some wondering why "African attire" would be banned by an African parliament, while others supported it.

Some have also mocked the ban, saying the Kaunda suit would now be reserved for the president.

"Just when you think you've seen it all... I guess the Kaunda suits have now been reserved for [the president]," said a social media user on X (formerly Twitter).

GETRUDE LUBINDA: CARVING OUT A BETTER FUTURE FOR HER CHILDREN THROUGH CARPENTRY

Livingstone Mayor Constance Nalishebo Muleabai has shone a light on a 49 year old woman of Libuyu Township in Livingstone who has managed to break the barriers in a male dominated Carpentry and Joinery industry.

Getrude Lubinda, a mother of five has taken the industry by storm through her dedication and hardwork which has left many people eager to watch her work at her workshop at Maramba Market.

Ms. Lubinda joined the carpentry business after she was divorced by her husband who went to settle in Kasama, leaving her to take care of five children without any job.

After the unfortunate turn of events, Ms. Lubinda could not sit idle or start begging on the streets, but she decided to use the skill she acquired during her secondary school days at Linda High School.

She is able to make a range of furniture pieces such as Beds, Wardrobes, Doors, Maurice Chairs and Cupboards among others. The carpentry business is now her main source of income that has helped her to feed and provide for her children.

But not everything is rosey, Ms. Lubinda is facing quite a number of challenges ranging from lack of resources to inadequate equipment to use to grow her business.

The Livingstone Mayor has committed to support women like Ms. Lubinda who are so determined to make a difference in society. The mayor has indicated that she will make sure that Ms. Lubinda registers her company and gets the necessary documents so that she can benefit from the CDF.

Despite the challenges she is facing in the industry, Ms. Lubinda has called on her fellow women to be resilient and work hard to earn a livelihood.

FORMER president Edgar Lungu will no longer get benefits that a former head of state enjoys, following his declaration to rejoin active politics.

This was announced by Information and Media spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa who said the decision is in line with the law.

Mr Mweetwa said the provides circumstances of which benefits of a former president can be withdrawn and so Mr Lungu's decision to rejoin active politics is one of them

"Let me now come to the issue to do with privileges and benefits of the former president Edgar Lungu. We would like the nation to know that on October 30th, which is two days ago, cabinet or secretary to cabinet wrote to the former president in accordance to the benefits of former presidents Act Cap 15 of the Laws of Zambia and drew to his attention that Government in line with the law that is now forthwith withdrawing the benefits that a former president should enjoy."

This is because of the fact that he has returned to active politics. This Act provides circumstances of which benefits of a former president can be withdrawn. So this trigger by the secretary to cabinet is simply out of operation of the law," he said.

He noted that the United Party for National Development (UPND) administration is not threatened by the return of Mr Lungu into active politics.

Mr Mweetwa also clarified that Mr Lungu's recent statement that political party cadres were mobilising to attack him at his house were unfounded and not true.

He said Government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema will not condone carderism under the guise of being in the ruling party like was done in the previous regime.

Mr Mweetwa in his address also assured areas in the country that have not yet received the Zambia National Service (ZNS) mealie meal that they will do so.
