2024 COSAFA CUP DIARY: Mbewe Names 27-Member Squad for Cosafa Meet

Zambia Under-20 coach Chisi Mbewe will lead the Chipolopolo at the 2024 COSAFA Cup that kicks off on June 26.

Mbewe has named a 27-man provisional squad for next week’s regional tournament due in South Africa from June 26-July 7 in Gqeberha.

It’s an all-local Chipolopolo squad for Mbewe except for Al Hilal striker Albert Kangwanda who is on loan at former club Red Arrows due to events taking place in the country.

Mbewe will be assisted on the technical bench by Mwenya Chipepo while Donewell Yobe will be the physical trainer. Emmanuel Msichili will be the goalkeeper coach while Lombe Chipupu will be the team manager.

There are a number of untested new players in the team including 19-year-old Zesco United midfielder David Simukonda and the U20 duo of Mathews Banda and Sekanji Siame who at 18 is the youngest in the Chipolopolo team.

Mutandwa Extends Stay with Cagliari Until 2027

Chipolopolo Boys striker Kingston Mutandwa's contract with Italian outfit Cagliari Calcio has been extended until 2027.

The 21-year-old striker, formerly of Atletico Lusaka, scored one goal in his debut season in Serie A after being promoted from the youth side, where he scored a good number of goals and impressed then-first-team coach Claudio Ranieri, who left the club at the end of the season.

The contract extension indicates the future the club sees in the player, and he is likely to see more action in the coming season.

Barbra Banda's Orlando Pride have now gone 13 league games this season without defeat following their 0-0 draw against the North Carolina Courage. They have won 8 and drawn the other 5.

The Copper Queens skipper played 90 minutes of football, having only played 45 minutes in the last two games.

However, there was no joy for Banda as she was denied any clear-cut scoring opportunities. Her efforts to set up teammates couldn't add to her goal contributions tally as they failed to utilize the chances created.

ANOTHER WORLD CUP FOR OUR LADIES

The Copper Princesses booked a World Cup spot following a 3-1 win over Morocco on aggregate.

The Morocco coach can go and apologize to his federation for failing to qualify for the World Cup, as he said he would.

For Coach Carol Kanyemba: congratulations on a job well done, together with the technical bench, players, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), and every club that contributed a player to this team in helping Zambia qualify for yet another World Cup tournament.

Our ladies find it easy to beat Morocco; it's only Avram Grant and his boys who struggle.

Congratulations!

ZAMBIA'S WORLD CUP DREAM SHATTERED BY TANZANIA DEFEAT

Zambia's hopes of qualifying for their first-ever FIFA World Cup finals were dashed on Tuesday after a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to neighboring Tanzania. This loss marks the Chipolopolo boys' third consecutive defeat in their World Cup qualifying campaign, having only managed a win against Congo Brazzaville on the opening matchday.

Head coach Avram Grant admitted to the team's low morale heading into the Tanzania clash, following back-to-back losses against Niger and Morocco. Despite the encouraging home support at the packed Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia's dream of reaching the World Cup finals remained unfulfilled.

A costly mistake by Emmanuel Banda, who appeared out of sorts throughout the game, gifted Tanzania an early lead just five minutes into the match.

Zambia's attempts to fight back were hampered by Avram Grant's late substitutions, which didn't allow the incoming players enough time to make a significant impact.

This result effectively ends Zambia's qualification campaign, with many fans calling for Avram Grant's resignation before his contract expires in December.

ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL LEGEND KALUSHA BWALYA HAILS GROWTH OF WOMEN'S GAME

Former Zambian Football Association president Kalusha Bwalya is impressed by the strides women's football has made in his country. Bwalya, a legendary striker himself, has been closely following the development of the women's game and is encouraged by what he sees.

"The ladies' game in Zambia has grown from strength to strength," Bwalya said. "There are some of the best players like Barbra [Banda] and Rachel [Kundananji] now campaigning in the USA and many others."

Bwalya highlighted the recent success of the Zambian women's national team, the Copper Queens. They participated in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and are now preparing for their second consecutive Olympic Games appearance.

"The girls are doing themselves proud for their families, for Zambia," Bwalya remarked. "I'm sure they'll have a good outing." He acknowledged the challenges they face but offered encouragement. "It's tough, but it's not the first time they are going to the Olympics, so we wish them all the best."

Bwalya believes the positive results are a reflection of increased investment in women's football. However, he sees room for further growth. "It's clear that money and time are being invested, but more sponsors, corporate companies and even government must come on board," he stated.

He emphasized the importance of continued investment. "There's talent of course, and it's up to the authorities to invest more," Bwalya stressed. "The coaches have done well, Bruce Mwape, the coach in the national team has done very, very well in my opinion."

ZAMBIA PLAYERS FAILS TO ADMIT MOROCOO DEFEAT LOSES FOCUS- AVRAM GRANT

Zambia's national team coach, Avram Grant, is urging his players to bounce back from their defeat to Morocco ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against Tanzania on Tuesday.

Grant admitted the loss was tough on his team, but emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming match. "It was difficult at first," he said in a pre-match interview, "but yesterday they started training well. I reminded them, as always, that the next game is the most important one."

The experienced coach, with 51 years under his belt, is confident his motivational talks have paid off. "They're in a good mood mentally now, and ready to face Tanzania," he declared.

Victory against Tanzania is essential for Zambia's World Cup dreams. The Chipolopolo Boys were held to a draw by their opponents during the Africa Cup of Nations in January, making Tuesday's clash all the more crucial.

"We know it's a very important game," Grant acknowledged. "We want to stay in the race against a very good opponent. We saw what they did against us at AFCON and in the qualifiers – they played with a lot of intensity."

However, the focus remains on Zambia's performance. "We need to think about ourselves and win this game," Grant stressed.

Grant boasts a perfect home record with Zambia, and hopes the passionate fans in Ndola will propel his team forward. "We're playing at home with our incredible supporters," he said. "We've always gotten results here, and we want to keep that going."

Zambia Not Out of World Cup Race Despite Loss, Says FAZ

Despite Friday's defeat to Morocco, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) insists the fight for World Cup qualification remains alive. With five games left, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga urged fans to stay positive ahead of Tuesday's crucial match against Tanzania at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

"There's a lot left to play for," Kamanga declared. "We have a young team with immense potential, but they need our support. The kickoff has been adjusted to a fan-friendly 6:00 pm, so we expect a packed Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Tuesday."

Zambia seeks a return to winning ways to stay on course for their first-ever World Cup qualification. However, achieving this feat requires unwavering support from the fans. Kamanga emphasized the importance of good sportsmanship, urging fans to refrain from throwing objects, a behavior witnessed in previous matches.

"We implore fans to be on their best behavior," Kamanga stated. "Throwing missiles in celebration or protest is archaic. Let's not jeopardize our ability to host future home matches."

Zambia has played three World Cup qualifiers so far, losing to Niger and Morocco after grabbing their opening win against Congo Brazzaville.

Young Zambian striker Kingston Mutandwa is over the moon about his inclusion in the final squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Mutandwa, who previously made the provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, is now part of the 24-man team travelling to Morocco under Avram Grant.

"This is a huge opportunity," Mutandwa exclaimed. "It's a dream come true for me, and I'm grateful for the chance."

The forward, a former U-20 regular, acknowledges the step up in competition. "The senior team is a different level," he said. "I'm happy to be here and learning from the experienced players."

Mutandwa feels welcomed by his senior teammates. "Everyone's been very supportive," he said.

The Cagliari Calcio attacker is hoping his hard work translates into results. "There's a lot of passion in training," he said. "We're all pushing hard to get maximum points."

Mutandwa also credited his former coach at Cagliari for his development. "The coaches in Italy really helped me," he said. "They saw potential in me, and that's helped me reach this point."

Mutandwa will be hoping to make his senior debut this Friday against Morocco or in the Tuesday home game against Tanzania.

Lameck Banda Recovers from Knee Surgery

Zambian national team winger Lameck Banda underwent successful knee surgery in March. He's now on the road to recovery and aiming to be fully fit for next season in Serie A with his club, US Lecce.

Banda's injury forced him to miss Zambia's national team action in March during the four nations tournament in Malawi. He also missed some of Lecce's end-of-season games.

Unfortunately, Banda won't be able to participate in the June World Cup qualifiers as he's still recovering from the surgery.

Come back stronger 💪.

ZAMBIA'S BANDA EMBRACES UNDERDOG ROLE FOR MOROCCO CLASH

Chipolopolo Boys midfielder Emmanuel Banda is looking to use Zambia's underdog status to their advantage as they face Morocco in a World Cup qualifier.

"Everyone expects Morocco to win, but that's not the case with us," Banda said. "We will go out there and fight with our hearts out. We are going to do our best and I believe it will be a different result."

Banda assured there's unity within the team despite off-field issues. "We are still united," he said. "We know what is at stake and when we get on the pitch we play as a team."

While acknowledging Morocco's strength, Banda believes Zambia can get a positive result. "We played them at the AFCON and went head to head with them," he said. Zambia travels to Morocco tomorrow for the match on Friday.

RED ARROWS TARGET CONTINENTAL GLORY AFTER DOMESTIC DOMINANCE

Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, has set his sights high for Red Arrows after their triumphant domestic double. Following their victories in both the Super League and Absa Cup, Nyoni challenged Arrows to conquer Africa's premier club competition, the CAF Champions League.

"There's no time to rest on laurels," declared Nyoni in a post-coronation interview. "We are champions, absolutely, but that just means the hard work continues. We have a responsibility to represent the country proudly on the continental stage."

Nyoni emphasized the significance of the Arrows' domestic success. "Winning both the Absa Cup and the Super League is a clear statement – we are the best in Zambia," he asserted.

However, the Commander urged the team to translate their domestic dominance onto the continental stage. "We need to prove ourselves at the highest level in Africa," he declared. "Winning the CAF Champions League is our ultimate goal. We are national champions, and that translates to a continental ambition – to be champions of Africa."
