Afcon 2023: Gambia squad 'could have died' on aborted flight to Ivory Coast

The Gambia delegation have refused to return to the same plane for their trip to Ivory Coast

The Gambia squad travelling to Ivory Coast for the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations "could have died" during a flight that was aborted, coach Tom Saintfiet has claimed.

The Air Cote d'Ivoire flight turned around just nine minutes after leaving the Gambian capital Banjul on Wednesday because of a lack of oxygen in the plane, which prompted many of the delegation to fall asleep.

Saintfiet praised the quick thinking of the pilot for keeping his team safe.

"The local crew said there was a problem with the air conditioning before we took off but that it would be all fine when we took off," Saintfiet told BBC Sport Africa.

"After a few minutes, it was very hot in the plane.

"We all fell asleep because there was a lack of oxygen - some of the players couldn't be woken up. The pilot noticed and we had to return.

"People got headaches and if the flight had gone on for another 30 minutes, the whole team would have died. The strange thing is that the oxygen masks didn't come out - it's good that the pilot realised that this was a deadly situation and so turned back.

"But we are still in shock."

Saintfiet believes the passengers could have been facing carbon monoxide poisoning, but Gambian FA (GFA) president Lamin Kaba Bajo refuted that suggestion.

"I never felt it and it's not clinically, scientifically or medically proven," Kaba Bajo told the BBC.

"Those are individual observations and perceptions but there was not anything like that. I was almost sitting next to the coach and I didn't see anyone collapse.

"I know that people, when a plane takes off, they sleep.

Court orders DNA test to ascertain whether Lusambo is father of Mercy Cowham’s children

THE Lusaka High Court has ruled that it is in the best interest of Mercy Cowham’s children that a paternity test be conducted to ascertain whether they are former Lusaka minister Bowman Lusambo’s children.

This is in a matter in which Lusambo sued Cowham in the Lusaka High Court, seeking damages for libel, an apology and an order for a DNA test to be conducted on her children to ascertain their paternity.

High Court Judge Mwila Kombe stated that after carefully analysing Lusambo’s facts in the matter, ascertaining the paternity of Cowham’s children was key and fundamental in getting to the root of the matte.

In keeping with our mandate of facilitating and regulating the movement of persons into and out of the country, the decision to deny the former Archbishop exit is based on confidential information received by the Department from his immediate family members. 2023 REFLECTIONS: TUBERCULOSIS (TB)

Tuberculosis, commonly known as TB, remains a major health concern, and as Ministry of Health, we have been working diligently to reduce TB. We have expanded our diagnostic capabilities to ensure that TB patients are treated. As a result, there has been an improvement in the number of confirmed TB cases, rising from 49% in 2022 to 56% in 2023.

Notably, the incidence of TB has decreased from 307 cases per 100,000 people in 2021 to 295 cases per 100,000 people in 2022. We have also seen an increase in TB notifications, with 53,156 cases reported by mid-December 2023, surpassing our target of 51,000 cases.

This increase in notifications is a good thing because it indicates that we have been able to identify and notify more cases of TB than in previous years. This reflects improved community mobilisation, staff capacity to diagnose suspected TB cases as well as the health facilities' ability to test for TB using available equipment.

A WOMAN carrying a seven months old pregnancy has died in Nchelenge district after being beaten by her husband.

Prudence Chabala,40, was kicked in her stomach by her 50 year old husband until she became unconscious.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the couple differed after Musonda Chisuza was accused of causing health complications in his wife's pregnancy because he was a womanizer.

Mr Hamoonga said the accusations did not sit well with Mr Chisuza resulting in a fight which led to the death of his wife.

“Brief facts are that on January 2,2024 around 16:00 hours whilst at home the deceased complained to her husband of being the cause of her sickness during her pregnancy because of womanizing, that made him upset and it was at that point he started kicking his pregnant wife in the stomach and she became unconscious, later she was rushed to Chisenga Island Rural health center where she was admitted,” said Mr Hamoonga.

He said her condition got worse and she was referred to Mbeleshi Mission Hospital where she died three days later.

Mr Hamoonga said the suspect is detained in police custody.

CHAOS ABOUT TO ERUPT: Congo’s Foreigner Military Intelligence Chief Among Tshisekedi’s Operatives Ordering Arrest Of Katumbi

An outbreak of violence has been predicted in the Democratic Republic of Congo following the move by the ruling government and army to place the popular opposition leader under house arrest.

Opposition Ensemble Pour la Republique party leader MoĂŻse Katumbi has had his private residence in Kashobwe village of Haut-Katanga Province surrounded by heavily armed army soldiers and ordered that he does not leave his property.

Military Detection of Unpatriotic Activities (DEMIAP) chief General Christian Ndaywel, a Belgian, has ordered the arrest of Katumbi in a move to neutralize the former Katanga Province Governor.

With the legitimacy of fraudster President Fùlix Tshisekedi’s re-election in huge doubt after an election marred with fraudulent irregularities, General Ndaywel has been tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the popular opposition candidate does not carry out a suspected rebellion in the Great Katanga region.

Katumbi earlier had his flight permit to flyout of Lubumbashi revoked by the Civil Aviation Authority and the noose continues to tighten for the opposition leader whose private properties have been placed under surveillance by DEMIAP, the military security as well as the police.

The move has been predicted to be an act of provocation of the Congolese population as well as new opposition political-military coalition Congo River Alliance leader Corneille Nangaa.

Nangaa, the former Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) President, has returned to the DRC after going into exile and has already warned of his planned move to oust Tshisekedi.

Already, DEMIAP chief General Ndaywel carried out the assassination of Katumbi’s party spokesperson and former Transport Minister Cherubin Okende who was killed in July, 2023 in an act performed to silence opposition.

General Ndaywel has been the subject of a complaint filed in Belgium since November 7, 2023 under his Belgian nationality.

Known to be a hawk of the Tshisekedi regime, General Ndaywel had initially distinguished himself on May 30, 2023, in the kidnapping and sequestration of Katumbi’s special and political advisor, Salomon Kalonda Della.

Detained for more than 7 months, Salomon Kalonda is currently held in a military prison and deprived of access to healthcare abroad despite his poor state of health.

General Ndaywel has had a background of complaints of “war crimes including intentional homicide and torture” filed against him before the Belgian courts but that does not seem to have curbed the ardor of the head of military intelligence of the FARDC who is also involved in the kidnapping and sequestration of several Congolese civilians detained in the DEMIAP dungeons.

Zambia losing about US$910m annually to road crashes - WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Zambia loses about US$910 million annually to road crashes, equivalent to 4.7 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

According to its Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023, if current trends persist, Zambia will face 115,000 preventable deaths and more than 486,000 people will be permanently disabled over the next 30 years.

The report details the scale of global road traffic deaths, and progress in advancing laws, strategies and actions to reduce them around the world.

The report suggests that by investing now in road safety, Zambia can avert more than 50,000 deaths, prevent more than 130,000 permanent disabilities, and avoid US$12.8 billion loss in economic costs over 30 years.

TB Joshua: Megachurch leader r**ed and tortured worshippers, BBC finds

(BBC) Evidence of widespread abuse and torture by the founder of one of the world's biggest Christian evangelical churches has been uncovered by the BBC.

Dozens of ex-Synagogue Church of all Nations members - five British - allege atrocities, including r**e and forced abortions, by Nigeria's late TB Joshua.

The allegations of abuse in a secretive Lagos compound span almost 20 years.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations did not respond to the allegations but said previous claims have been unfounded.

TB Joshua, who died in 2021, was a charismatic and hugely successful preacher and televangelist who had an immense global following.

The BBC's findings over a two-year investigation include:

Dozens of eyewitness accounts of physical violence or torture carried out by Joshua, including instances of child abuse and people being whipped and chained.

Numerous women who say they were sexually assaulted by Joshua, with a number claiming they were repeatedly r**ed for years inside the compound.

Multiple allegations of forced abortions inside the church following the alleged r**es by Joshua, including one woman who says she had five terminations.

Multiple first-hand accounts detailing how Joshua faked his "miracle healings", which were broadcast to millions of people around the world.
