11-yr-old from Mbala looking after sick dad in UTH

An 11-Year-old boy from Mbala is the sole family member taking care of his critically sick 49-year-old father currently admitted to the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) where he was referred to.
His father, Reuben Musukuma, has been diagnosed with tuberculosis relapse and suspected lung cancer.

“My father has been unwell for the past six months and I have been the only one by his side as my mother died when I was still a baby,” he said in an interview conducted in the presence of UTH acting public relations officer Brilliant Mukuma and his father.

“It is my father who has raised me and he is the only relative I have and ever known. When he got very sick last week and was informed that he will be moved to Lusaka for further treatment, I tried visiting a few relatives dad suggested to me, hoping that maybe one or two elders will come along.

“But those I approached told me that they are not our relatives, they said a lot of things and denied taking up any responsibility with regard to dad’s health or myself. Before I realised it, it was time to move dad to this big hospital.”

Mr Mukuma said Mr Musukuma, a Mbala resident, came with his son and was admitted to UTH on Monday. “His father is in a critical condition,” he said.

“We have been told that the young boy is the only relative to this man and that they have no relatives willing to render help in this situation.

“The social welfare has been notified about this issue and we are hoping for a solution to be found.” The boy told Daily Mail that it has been rough taking care of his father, who is currently on an oxygen machine.

Zambian woman develops E-commerce application

Twenty-one-year-old Karen Tembo has developed an e-commerce application, Zedex, which enables Zambian female-led businesses to sell their products online.

The platform, which mimics Amazon and Ali-express, is aimed at supporting small local businesses. In an exclusive interview, Tembo shares the genesis of Zedex.

“Zedex is a unique shopping app which is completely Zambian-owned. We provide an extremely safe shopping environment for customers because we play a role in each and every transaction and order made on our platform,” she said.

Currently, the platform has on-boarded 40 female entrepreneurs, who sell products such as jewellery, skincare products, home décor, make-up, lingerie, among others.

I leave with great pride - Gen Barry

Zambia Air Force (ZAF) immediate-past Commander Colin Barry says the institution is in capable hands and he leaves it full of gratitude and pride.

Lieutenant General Barry, the 12th indigenous ZAF commander, served from August 30, 2021 to December 20, 2023 when his deputy Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni took over from him.

A fly-in fly-out parade – a ceremonial event that signals the handing over of the leadership mantle from one commander to the next – was held at ZAF headquarters in Lusaka yesterday.

The event, as per military custom, was replete with spectacle.

Before any speeches could be read, there was a general salute by those on parade, Gen Barry inspecting the parade mounted in his honour, the parade marching past in slow and quick time, and reading of Gen Barry’s curriculum vitae (CV).

Other activities included signing of the commander’s handover, takeover book, handing over of instruments of leadership and presentation of gifts to Gen Barry, who in his speech thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for the trust and confidence he showed in him when he appointed him to lead ZAF.

“Serving the Zambia Air Force and people of Zambia was a great privilege,” he said. “Thank you, Mr President, Sir, and may God bless you and your leadership.

Doc finds no proof 75-yr-old granny was r***d

A medical doctor has testified in the Ndola Magistrates Court that he did not find evidence of r**e on a 75-year-old woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted by her grandson in Masaiti, Copperbelt.

The doctor told the court that upon questioning, the woman did confirm that she had not been subjected to any sexual assault by Boyd Bulemba, who is charged with ra**ng his grandmother, who was suffering from stroke at the time.

The alleged incident took place on September 28 last year, around 01:00 hours, when Bulemba allegedly sexually assaulted his sick grandmother while other family members were waiting outside for a relative who was returning from Mkushi.

However, medical licentiate Edgar Chisala, an expert witness in the matter, said his findings after examinations were inconclusive with the claims.

“On September 29 last year I was called to go and review a patient brought in the casualty department in a case of sexual assault,” he said.

“I examined the victim and conducted investigations. I documented all my findings on a police form, and later I signed the medical report submitted to the police.

Dr Chisala said the victim denied having been penetrated by her grandson. “I asked her, she insisted that nothing of such sort happened,” he said.

“Witnesses are the ones who said there was pe*******on. She told me, ‘the ones who brought me here know what happened’. She did not say anything about the accused.”

Maize ventures cheer HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed happiness that a number of citizens are venturing into maize production.

The President noted that there is no any other way out of the food crisis other than venturing into more production.

In a post online, President Hichilema encouraged citizens to share on his page their ventures so that others can also be encouraged.

“We are extremely happy to note that several of you, our citizens, have this farming season ventured into maize production,” he said.
“As Government, we are extremely impressed because there is no other way out of the food crisis apart from more production.

“We are hard-working citizens and, surely, the challenges before us will not stop us from realising Zambia’s dream of being a food basket for the region, continent, and the global community at large.”

During his end-of-year press briefing last month, President Hichilema advised civil servants and other workers to venture into agriculture by starting small.

Mob kills mentally disabled man after murder of 2 boys

Two siblings aged six and five of Shiwang’andu, Muchinga Province, have been murdered and dumped in a river by a suspected mentally disabled man who has also been beaten to death by a mob.

The alleged murderer has been identified as Kelvin Mulenga, an ex-convict who served years in a correctional facility for killing his grandfather.

Mulenga, of Mukungule, allegedly killed the two boys on Tuesday afternoon. Since his release from the correctional facility, he is said to have been involved in a number of crimes such as attacking animals and eating raw meat.

But on Tuesday, his violent nature turned towards the two boys, whose parents had gone to their respective crop fields and left the children playing within the village.

Later, they received information around 11:00 hours that their children had been picked by Mulenga, who was heading towards Lufile river.

Muchinga Province police commanding officer Paul Achiume said in a statement that the parents rushed to the suspect’s shelter, where they found him with soaked trousers.

When they questioned him about the whereabouts of the children, he kept quiet.

He said the situation angered community members, who started beating the suspect until he led them to the river, where some of the people started searching for the boys.

“The bodies of the two were later spotted being carried away [by the water current] in the river before they were retrieved,” Mr Achiume said.

One of the bodies was found with a big cut on the right limb and bruised head while the other had a cut on the manhood and left arm. Mr Achiume said the situation angered community members, who continued beating the suspect.

New Year's Prayer

As the dawn breaks on a new year, let us give thanks for all we hold dear: our health, our family and our friends.

Let us release our grudges, our anger and our pains, for these are nothing but binding chains. Let us live each day in the most loving ways, the God-conscious way. Let us serve all who are in need, regardless of race, color or creed.

Let us keep God of our own understanding in our hearts and to chant God's name each day. Let us lead the world from darkness to light, from falsehood to truth and from wrong to right.

Let us remember that we are all one, embracing all, discriminating against none.

May your year be filled with peace, prosperity and love. May God's blessings shower upon you and bestow upon each of you a bright, healthy and peaceful new year.

Man denied refund after buying 'fake' Nikes from teen

An Australian man who spent nearly 30,000 Australian dollars (US$20,350) on shoes he now believes to be fake has had his case thrown out by a tribunal.

He was seeking a refund for seven pairs of sneakers, some of them ultra-rare shoes produced jointly by sportswear and fashion giants Nike and Dior.

But state legal authorities found he had knowingly bought the trainers from a boy who was only 17 at the time.

That meant he could not sign contracts and was not liable for refunds.

Teen in court for stealing inswa

A 16-year-old boy of Sakwi Village under Chief Zingalume has appeared before Chadiza Magistrates Court for theft of various items including a pot, beans, groundnuts and a bowl of inswa, the flying termites that come with the rainy season.

It is alleged that the teenager on December 17 last year did break into a house where he stole property belonging to Aliness Mbewe, 41, of the same village.

At the time of the theft, Mbewe had gone to her field early in the morning only to find the door to her two-room house wide open on her return.

After checking around, she further discovered that a lot of things were missing including K200 cash which was hidden under a mattress, a pot, 5kg packet of beans, packet of groundnuts and a bowl of inswa. “I quickly realised that my house was broken into,” she explained.

Afterwards, Mbewe went to a famous drinking place, where she found the teen with some of the beans which were identified to be hers.

She alerted a neighbourhood watch member, who later apprehended the teen before taking him to Chadiza Police Station.
Mbewe managed to recover K40 from the teen from the items stolen, which were valued at K800. The case continues on Friday.

Morning prayer

God of all time,
help us enter the New Year quietly,
thoughtful of who we are to ourselves and to others,
mindful that our steps make an impact
and our words carry power.
May we walk gently.
May we speak only after we have listened well.
Creator of all life,
help us enter the New Year reverently,
aware that you have endowed
every creature and plant, every person and habitat
with beauty and purpose.
May we regard the world with tenderness.
May we honor rather than destroy.
Lover of all souls,
help us enter the New Year joyfully,
willing to laugh and dance and dream,
remembering our many gifts with thanks
and looking forward to blessings yet to come.
May we welcome your lavish love.

FIC wants tougher laws on casinos, betting

Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) director of compliance and prevention Diphat Tembo says the increase in casino and sports betting businesses requires a strong regulatory and monitoring framework to avoid the platforms being used as channels of money laundering and illicit financial flows.

Mr Tembo said there is need to strengthen the weak laws and tighten supervision procedures for businesses that may pose threats to the stability of the country’s financial stability.

“The rise of casino and sports betting businesses is and can be a good source of revenue generation and job creation if handled properly.

“But they also pose a threat to the financial stability of the country and the economy in general, since the regulatory and monitoring framework is not as strong as it should be and also the registration fees for these entities are very low compared to what they earn,” Mr Tembo said in an interview after an engagement with the media.

About 10 recruits undergoing training in the defence force are currently admitted at Maina Soko Medical Centre after succumbing to injuries.

Maina Soko Medical Centre commandant Levy Muchemwa says some of the injured recruits have been in wards for some time, thereby affecting their training.

Brig-Gen Muchemwa said this yesterday when Maj-Gen Kalaluka and other military personnel visited patients at Maina Soko Medical Centre.

Hampers were distributed to patients and to a New Year baby girl, Chana Mtonga, born from Taizya Sokoni Mtonga.

“We have about 63 patients in the ward, we have three officers and 10 recruits and we have about five soldiers. We also have about 19 dependants.

Over to Chipolopolo - Kamanga

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga says they have done their best to prepare Chipolopolo for the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) and expects the team to reciprocate by delivering desired results.

Kamanga said in his weekly President’s Corner column yesterday that FAZ’s duty is to provide logistical support.

“As always, our duty is only to provide logistical support to the team while we expect them to reciprocate with good performances.

We have been working closely with Government in line with the existing memorandum of under-standing to ensure that everything is logistically done to ease the team’s prepa-rations,” he said.

Matambo summons councils, MPs

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo has summoned councils and Members of Parliament in the region to review use of the 2023 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) with a warning to penalise non-performing local authorities.

Mr Matambo says the gathering will be a follow-up to two other meetings which were held earlier, where it was established that some councils are failing to implement CDF projects despite being in possession of the money.

He said the meeting is scheduled to be held this month, adding that all non-performing councils will be penalised for insubordination.

“The councils which will be found deliberately failing to execute projects will have to be penalised as I will take it as insubordination,” Mr Matambo said last week when he handed over 41 CDF projects in Kitwe.

He said he also wants parliamentarians to be present during the gathering because they usually accuse councils of delaying programmes.

MPs told to visit grassroots

Government Chief Whip Stafford Mulusa has directed all United Party for National Development (UPND) Members of Parliament (MPs) to use 2024 to get back to the people and explain the achievements scored by the ruling party.

Mr Mulusa said people on the ground are complaining about the performance of the UPND because elected leaders and party functionaries are not going back to the grassroots to explain successes recorded since the party assumed office in 2021.

He said it will be difficult to get back to the people in 2026 if the MPs and party functionaries abandon them now.

“People on the ground have got the right to complain because we are not going back to them as MPs, councillors, council chairpersons and mayors to explain what we have done since we formed government,” Mr Mulusa said.

“This year is a year we have dedicated to deliver to our people because 2026 we are not going to promise development again but to merely explain to the people what we have done.”
