OVER 86,000 registered practising teachers of 129,400 licensed tutors risk not getting back to class next year because their practising certifications will be expiring in just over three weeks.

According to the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) records obtained by Zambia Daily Mail, there are 129,402 registered teachers but practising licences for 86,359 of them are expiring this month-end.

Going by the law, it means they are not allowed to step foot in classroom or they risk conviction.

“A person who contravenes subsection (1), (2) or (3) commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding three hundred thousand penalty units [300,000 penalty units] or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years, or both,” Section 4 of the Teaching Profession Act No. 5 of 2013 states.

UPDATE
RDA met the potential bidders for Katunda-Lukulu-Watopa-Mumbezhi Road Lot 1 (80km) from Katunda to Kashamba.

Bidders and RDA team inspected the whole stretch from Katunda to Kashamba before proceeding to Lukulu where they had an official meeting with the bidders and local administration.

RDA reminded the bidders that the tender will close in December 27th and they should use this time remaining to come up with a realistic bid especially that they visited the site. RDA added that the meeting they had in Lukulu was not mandatory but optional meaning even those bidders who were not present in that meeting or didn't have time to inspect the stretch are all in the race.

The RDA showed the bidders present during the stretch inspection the source of valuable products like water, quarry, gravel etc. In cross-examination one of the bidders suggested that boreholes should be drilled along the road as water sources so that when the works are done, those boreholes can remain helping the community.

The 80km stretch is expected to be completed in 30 months period (2 and half years).

The bidding process is expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2025 or end of the rain season works will start.

Some stake holders present in the meeting wondered why the stretch is not starting from Lukulu CBD where people and activities are than starting from Katunda. RDA's response is that Lukulu CBD will be covered in Lot 2. Note: no time frame for Lot 2 yet.

One of the local councilors asked RDA why they didn't have a meeting with the stakeholders before meeting the bidders or when is RDA going to meet stakeholders (Lukulu people)? RDA's response is that today's task was to meet the bidders and people will be told when such a meeting will be arranged.

Katunda .. Kashamba stretch will have other bridges reconstructed or renovated.
