...we feature the Komboni President...
On The Conversation Podcast today, we feature a personality from the entertainment and arts world- Thomas Sipalo.
During the period of a single tv broadcast station, Zambians will remember comedy by Sauzande (Daniel Kanengoki) and Maximo (Chanda Mwale) in a long runing tv series known as Play Circle.
When new and rival TV stations opened, Bikiloni ( Levison Nkhoma) and Difikoti ( Thomas Sipalo) pioneered fresh and vernacular TV comedy and commercialized the art with their association with sponsors.
But Thomas Siplao has transitioned from Comedy to Politics and nearly won the Munali Constituency seat in 2021 almost beating giants candidates from the ruling Patriotic Front and the Opposition United Party for National Development.

United Party for National Development Mount Makulu ward officials in Chilanga Constituency of Lusaka have warned the party may be removed from the government if Republican President Hakainde Hichilema continues to neglect party structures.

Another UPND member who requested anonymity urged President Hichilema to listen to the voices at the grassroots saying those close to him are misleading him.

HH MUST RESIGN AS 'GLOBAL CHOLERA CONTROL CHAMPION' - M'MEMBE
SOCIALIST Party President Dr Fred Mโmembe says the rise in cholera deaths signifies a collapsing healthcare system.
As of Saturday, January 6, 2024, Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) revealed that Cholera had claimed 195 lives out 5071 patients since it broke out in Zambia.
Speaking after he donated chlorine to residents of Lusakaโs Garden Compound, Dr. M'membe said President Hakainde Hichilema who was appointed in May 2022 at the World Health Assembly, in Geneva, Switzerland, as Global Cholera Control Champion, must resign because he is a Champion of failure.
He said the 2024 National Budgets has remained silent on financing the Multi-Sectoral Cholera Elimination Plan which was launched in 2019.
Dr. M'membe said the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Water Development and Sanitation analysis of the 2024 National Budget noted that as a share of the total budget, the allocation to WASH has dropped from 1.4% in 2023 to 1.3% in 2024, continuing a downward trend that began in 2021.
The SP President said the Governmentโs decreasing investment in WASH relative to the overall budget and other priorities is inconsistent with its stated goal of improving WASH services.
Dr. Mโmembe said it was heartbreaking to see people dying helplessly due to excessive congestion in health care facilities.
โWhat we are seeing now is indicative of a health care system, which is on the verge of collapse,โ Dr Mโmembe said.
โLet Mr. Hichilema come out in the open and admit that he has failed to manage the cholera situation in the country, especially in Lusaka," he said.
Dr. M'membe said the cholera outbreak has worsened owing to the UPND administrationโs failure to heed calls from stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector to increase the budgetary allocation, which has been declining yearly.
The SP President said with proper planning and mobilization of resources, th

DANGER KNOCKING RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP
By: Thelma M. Mutale
This morning, I was deeply saddened to come across a video depicting the current dire situation at Matero Level 1 Hospital. Patients suspected of suffering from cholera are forced to sleep on the floor, with their relatives assisting the health professionals.
Cholera outbreaks can be particularly challenging, impacting public health significantly. It is crucial for communities and authorities to collaborate and implement measures such as improved sanitation, access to clean water, and prompt medical care to control and prevent the spread of this disease.
Addressing the cholera epidemic is a critical issue, and advocating for government action is an impactful endeavor.
The situation demands urgent and comprehensive government intervention to safeguard the health and well-being of our citizens.
As you are undoubtedly aware, cholera outbreaks pose a significant threat to public health, with wide-ranging consequences for affected communities. The lack of access to clean water, proper sanitation, and adequate healthcare facilities has exacerbated the spread of this preventable disease.
As citizens, we urge the government to take immediate action to address the following key areas:
1. Water and Sanitation Infrastructure: Invest in and improve water and sanitation infrastructure to ensure clean water access for all citizens.
In the past five months, Lusaka has witnessed erratic water supply. Everyday people from various nearby communities lined up along Mosi O Tunya road fetching water. During this period, we even saw less of the VIPs passing because people genuinely called out to VIPs to address the problems they were going through.
You can't keep a densely populated Lusaka without water for a long time; these are the problems now.
2. Healthcare Facilities: Strengthen healthcare facilities to efficiently diagnose, treat, and manage cholera cases. This includes ensuring an adequate supply of medications
