Winner winner chicken dinner
With a couple of packets of chicken pieces and a little forward planning, you’ll have a week of easy meals with flavours from around the world.

For these marinade recipes, we’ve used 1kg chicken - enough to feed a family of three to four.

1/4 cup olive oil; 3 large garlic cloves (minced or finely chopped), 1 Tbsp dried oregano, sea salt and black pepper to taste, juice of one lemon, 1 cup plain full cream yoghurt (Greek if you can get it), half a cup roughly chopped fresh parsley.

𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘆
1/2 cup soy sauce; 3 Tbsp rice wine vinegar; 2 tsp toasted sesame oil; 3 Tbsp honey; quarter cup brown sugar, 1 chunk fresh ginger, thinly sliced, 3 cloves minced or finely chopped garlic cloves, 3 or 4 spring onions, roughly chopped; optional 1 chopped jalapeño

Easiest, tastiest treat ever ... frozen peanut butter-stuffed, chocolate-dipped dates.

Simply pop the pips out of the dates and replace with a half a spoon or so of crunchy peanut butter - or any nut butter of your choice.

Melt a slab of Beyers Sultry Dark Chocolate - it’s 57 per cent chocolate with cocoa nibs - in a double boiler, making sure the pan doesn’t touch the simmering water.

Once melted, give a good stir and then pop in each date to cover. Put onto a baking tin, and put into the freezer until frozen.

They keep in the freezer for ages, not that they’ll last very long! You’ll find Beyers chocolates at stores including Clicks, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar and Takealot.

Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City wins Game of Chefs
The talented team of four chefs Courtyard Hotel chefs - Natalie Schoonbee, Ro-Anne Williams, Erick Mbudu, and Evans Mtombela - proved they were up to the challenge and were named Game of Chefs 2024 champions.
The heat of the kitchen, the pressure of the clock counting down, and the scrutiny of the judges and spectators – culinary competitions are not for the faint hearted! Game of Chefs is an invitation-based, World Association of Chefs Societies-approved national competition, now in its fifth year. It is open to teams of professional chefs from restaurants, hotels, lodges, catering companies, and chefs’ associations in South Africa. This event was also the international leg of the competition and was held in the EconoFoods Culinary Village during the Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa and Africa's Big 7 show recently.
The eight competing teams were given two-and-a-half hours to gather ingredients from the EconoFoods on-site pantry, write up their menus, cook, plate, and serve 15 individual servings of a three-course meal.
The team from Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City created a menu from a mystery basket that included papaya, turnips, tuna, duck, beef short rib, and camembert, plus regular pantry items.
On their menu was …
Starter: Tuna Tataki, with cucumber and kiwi fruit salsa, pickled ginger and teriyaki
Main: Seared Duck Breast, Duck Leg and Beef Short Rib Trio, with roast garlic mashed potato, pak choi, turnip, papaya and gooseberry gremolata
Dessert: Camembert Mousse, with coconut sponge, berry compote, and smoked vanilla condensed milk drizzle
The winning menu where the team walked away with the winner’s trophy, gold medals, certificates, and a whopping R40 000 cash prize.
Congrats to the chefs from Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City on their victory.

Your journey to radiant skin starts here with Brightening Vitamin C Wipes (R39.99) and Brightening Vitamin C Serum (R199).
The wipes cleanse and refresh your skin and the serum is infused with a blend of vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid. But what exactly do these ingredients do?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralise free radicals, which can cause damage to the skin and lead to signs of ageing. Vitamin E and ferulic acid work alongside vitamin C to enhance its effectiveness, making it even more powerful at brightening the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and stimulating collagen production.
The result? Radiant, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. And with a 15% Vitamin C concentration, it’s just enough to brighten without causing irritation, and is suitable for most skin types. Both from Clicks

Being happy at 100. A murder in a retirement village. And aging disgracefully. There’s a load of fun to be had when you’re no longer nine to five-ing!

In Clare Pooley’s 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆, Daphne knows that age is just a number, but that society no longer pays her any attention – something she’s happy to exploit to help her hide a somewhat chequered past. But finding herself alone on her 70th birthday, with only her plants to talk to and neighbours to stalk online, she decides she needs some friends. Joining a Senior Citizen’s Social Club, she’s horrified at the expectation she’ll spend her time enduring gentle crafting activities. Thankfully, the other members – including a failed actor addicted to shoplifting and a prolific yarn-bomber – agree. After a tragic accident, the local council threaten to close the club – but they have underestimated the wrong group of pensioners! Penguin

𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟬𝟬, 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗔𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆. Well, exactly! Rhee Kun Hoo was in his 70s and retired from his psychiatry career when he took up writing. Now in his twilight years, his lessons for a long and joyful life tells of the often-overlooked value of ageing. He shares his wisdom and philosophy for finding a life well-lived, exploring forgiveness, how to persevere (but also know when to quit) and opening yourself to the simple joys available to you every day. Life, he says, is a story worth reading until the very last page. Penguin Random House

After 30 years of marriage, Louisa is stunned when her husband asks for a divorce. He has, apparently, fallen in love with a young woman who, horrors, also happens to be the ex who broke their son’s heart. So off he goes to start his new life, while she sells up the family home and begins, after a while, to make some exciting life plans. Oh ... and that new life of his. Living that dream is now all as hunky as he thought it would be! 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 by Erica James is all family drama and humour and a wonderfully satisfying ending! HQ

The Summer of 1919, and following the end of the First World War, Constance is without prospects. While looking for a position as a bookkeeper or (horrors) a governess, she’s sent - rather reluctantly - as a lady’s companion to an old family friend convalescing at a seaside hotel. So sets the scene for the smashingly enjoyable new book by Helen Simsonson - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 ... all English high society and a country preparing to celebrate peace and - obviously - and handsome fighter pilot to warm things up a little. Bloomsbury

63-year-old Syliva is furious when she finds her husband in bed with another woman. But then it dawns on her ... she hates living in a retirement village - it’s for old people, and she’s certainly not old. She and her 70-year-old, tremendously glamorous friend head to Manhattan to start a new life ... which includes reviving her wedding planning business and being back in the dating game. Hillary Yablon’s 𝗦𝘆𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁 is an hilarious feel-good read, showing how growing older may not always mean growing wiser, but it certainly does mean having a lot of fun! Orion

There’s been a murder in the Shady Oaks retirement centre. The victim is a retired policeman, and his murder is soon followed by another body being discovered - that of the home’s head of security. Add one ace detective and her partner, throw in a love interest and two marvellous old biddies and you’ve a heart-stoppingly exciting read. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 by Karen Rose. Headline

Tired of making an endless supply of aubergine bhajis, Mrs Sidhu - caterer and amateur sleuth - is delighted when she gets offered a position as chef in a quiet village. Until she discovers that a murderer is apparently picking victims through the fairground raffle. 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗵𝘂’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗲 by Suk Pannu is delightfully dark. Harper Collins UK

Love to wine and dine? Well how about this … front row seats to a bustling kitchen where you, as the dinner guest, get to capture every bit of a full-service dinner rush, and have dish after dish after dish make its way to a decked-out chef’s table in the midst of it all.
Usually an experience only available during Restaurant Week South Africa, The Chef’s Table is now a permanent feature at 54 on Bath’s Level Four Restaurant kitchen. Only a well-orchestrated kitchen would brave having their dinner guest observe every minute from preparing to plating … and the team at this splendid spot are nothing if not brave.
The experience is curated by Executive Chef Donaldson Madubela and is for a maximum of four people each night.
