Defending Our Rhino
@DUrbanTV celebrates Sept 22 - World Rhino Day - as a reminder that these creatures are an integral part of our local heritage. So what is the state of Rhino in Africa specifically.
According to the latest International Rhino Foundation report South Africa is the most targeted country across the continent by poachers.
In 2022 South Africa continues to battle devastating poaching losses of its white rhinos as poachers target Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve and other reserves within KwaZulu-Natal province.
In comparison, White rhino numbers are declining quickly due to the poaching onslaught, whilst Black Rhino numbers - the more elusive of our two species - are actually increasing.
Across the rest of Africa poaching has been severely decreased or is non-existant.
Chad - 0, eSwatini - 0, Kenya - 0, Rwanda - 0,
Uganda, Zambia - non reported
DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania - Not reported,
Botswana reports 138 rhinos poached over last 5 years
Namibia - 87 in 2022
Zimbabwe - 13 in 2022
SOUTH AFRICA - 448 in 2022; 231 in first 6 months of 2023
We HAVE to ask ourselves WHY?
2023 Rhino Headlines:
The biggest news from South Africa this year is the sale of Platinum Rhino Project and their 2,000 southern white rhinos to nonprofit African Parks, which will begin historic and critical translocations across Africa in order to build rhino populations in key protected areas. After years of uncertainty about the fate of these animals, which comprise an eighth of the world’s white rhino population, this plan is a welcome relief and will greatly contribute to conservation of the species.
South Africa continues to battle devastating poaching losses. Although there has been a decline in poaching in Kruger National Park and in the country overall in 2023, poachers have shifted their focus to coastal KwaZulu-Natal province, particularly embattled Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. The reduction in poaching in Kruger is likely due in part to increased security measures and
Wishing all our viewers and Durban a Happy New Year for 2023. Let's #MakeItGreat together.
Defending Our Rhino
Recently released reports in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa show an increase in rhino poaching statistics close to 300% since 2021. A total loss of 131 rhino’s killed between July 2021 & June 2022 alone!
Zululand is once again in the grip of a war – but this time to defend it’s Rhino from increased poaching.
The drastic down-turn in the tourism economy due to covid resulting in huge losses of income, job losses and extreme hardships to communities that rely on tourism in South Africa has not gone un-noticed by the criminals who wait like scavengers to take advantage of a wounded tourism industry and the vulnerable communities who have actively protected our rhino so courageously.
Zululand has brought Rhino back from the brink of extinction once, and again it’s up to dedicated conservationists, reserves and communities to protect their animals and stop the onlsaught of poaching syndicates on our rhino populations.
DUrban TV went out with Bonamanzi Game ReserveConservation wildlife team and West 360 adventures to see the reality of efforts being done on the ground…and were given a stark lesson on the urgency to stop poachers.
Rhino poaching stats quoted from Ezemvelo report covering 2020-2022 period as at 27 June.
