Brazen hijackers caught on camera in Umgeni Road
Police are searching for the three men who were involved in a hijacking incident outside Waste Centre Fabrics on uMgeni Road on Friday, 19 January.
Security camera footage from a nearby business captured the harrowing ordeal endured by the elderly man. In the footage, we see a white Toyota Corolla arrive at the parking area at approximately 7.45am, 15 minutes before the business opened for the day.
Two men can be seen casually walking by, when the victim opens his car door and the two men rush towards the car, producing a firearm.
The victim is seen struggling with the attackers as he is pulled from his vehicle. The elderly man can be seen screaming for help to no avail before he is struck on the back of the head with a pistol. The two attackers then entered the vehicle with a third man, who snuck into the passenger side while the other two men overpowered the victim.
The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. The suspects discharged the firearm as they fled, however, no injuries were reported.
Security company, KZN VIP, was dispatched to the scene. KZN VIP spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo said: “KZN VIP medics arrived on the scene to assist the male victim, who suffered a hematoma to the back of his head after being pistol-whipped by the suspects. The patient’s vitals were elevated due to the incident and he was transported to hospital.”
A case has been opened and is being investigated at SAPS Durban Central.
Spokesperson for SAPS Durban Central, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said: “It is alleged that on 19 January at 7:45am, a 62-year-old male complainant parked his vehicle outside his place of work on uMgeni Road. As he was locking his vehicle, three unknown suspects approached him, hit him with a firearm and pushed him to the ground. They searched him and took his wallet and white Toyota Corolla. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”
A Durban Central CPF member also commented on the incident.
He said: “What we are seeing
