A suspected military training base has been uncovered in the small farming town of White River in Mpumalanga. A joint police operation that included the Provincial Joint Structures and Home Affairs descended on the camp and detained 95 Libyan nationals. They are being processed and questioned. Mpumalanga’s acting police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, indicates that they carried out the raid after receiving intelligence about a suspected camp. Police say the place had initially been designated as a training site, but it now appears to have been converted into an illegal military training base. The provincial commissioner says they take any threat to the security and stability of the area and country seriously. Investigations into this discovery continue.

Criminals in KwaZulu-Natal have been told that those who shoot at police should expect the same kind of response. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwa-nazi issued the warning saying if officers find themselves under gunfire, the only option they have in order to come out alive is through the return of fire. It comes after three wanted suspects were shot dead in an area in Empangeni. They were wanted in connection with at least ten murders and an ATM bombing in which one suspect was fatally shot. The suspects were found in possession of two fi****ms.

The Health Department is considering all its options including an appeal after the North Gauteng High Court struck down sections 36 to 40 of the National Health Act which relates to the certificate of need. According to the department the certificate aims to regulate all health establishments, not only hospitals. Among its objectives is to regulate the quality and standard of healthcare being provided in a particular facility as well as determine whether an intention to put up a facility, extend the facility, increase the number of beds or put particular equipment is appropriate for that area. It adds that similar laws exist in other countries including Australia, Canada and India. The department believes the court has erred in its ruling saying that it seems to have placed economic property rights at the expense of the right to health. The Health Department’s spokesperson Foster Mohale says the affected provisions have nothing to do with the NHI as they were drafted 20 years ago.

Twelve learners from Pretoria High School for Girls have been suspended for alleged racism. The Gauteng Education Department indicates that this action was taken after a protest was planned for last Friday. It was apparently triggered by racial connotations, micro-aggressions and complaints about black learners which were ventilated in a WhatsApp Group comprised of white learners. An urgent meeting was held on the same day of the planned protest, and aggrieved learners were given a platform to voice their grievances. Pretoria High School for Girls is the same school which made headlines in 2016 over its racist hair policy.

In a bid to tackle climate change, President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Climate Change Bill into law. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwena says the Climate Change Act enables the alignment of policies that influence the country’s climate change response to ensure a transition to a low carbon and climate resilient economy and society – not constrained by policy contradictions. The law further seeks to enhance the country’s ability and capacity over time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while reducing the risk of job losses, and promoting opportunities for new job opportunities in the emerging green economy. South Africa is one of more than 190 members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change who are parties to the eight-year-old Paris Agreement.

23/07/2024

The City of Cape Town says it is aware of the high number of potholes along parts of Jakes Gerwell Drive. Following the nearly two weeks of severe weather conditions, many of the metro’s roads suffered damage, causing the formation of potholes.

Speaking to Radio 786, Chairperson of the United Residents Association in Mitchells Plain Norman Jantjies says the issue of potholes is not restricted to just Jakes Gerwell Drive, but even right in front of the Mitchells Plain police station.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas says due to Cape Town’s hydrological year only ending around October, the city’s roads would remain wet and damp for prolonged periods of time impacting road repair work. However, it does have a strategy to conduct interim repairs to roads even during the winter periods.

Quintas further adds that due to Jakes Gerwell and AZ Berman Drive largely being transformed into a construction site to build infrastructure to accommodate MyCiTi busses, the contractor Martin and East is responsible for ensuring that the areas around its construction site is safe.

He has urged affected residents to lodge formal complaints so that the contractor is made aware of the safety risks its construction site poses and that it can effectively respond.

Labour federation SAFTU has rejected the two-pot retirement system in its current form. It has taken issue with the limitations imposed on the second pot, arguing that it dilutes the pension reform that workers have been demanding. SAFTU's General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi says the rules mean that a worker who is dismissed, retrenched or who resigns, will not access their pensions in lump sum until they become of retirement age. He says many workers are confronted with financial hardships and emergencies before that age, and the ability to access a portion of their pension savings can provide much-needed relief. In the current version which was passed into law last week workers will have access to a third of their pensions, with a payable withdrawal capped at R30 000. The rest, over 66%, will be locked away and only accessible once the individual retires or reaches that age. This will then be disbursed in the form of an annuity.
