UPDATE| A video made the rounds on social media, depicting a Palestinian man in distress, Muhammad Abu al-Qumsan, who returned with birth certificates for his twin babies, Aser and Aysel Abu Al-Qumsan, only to find them killed in an airstrike along with his wife, Jumana Abu al-Qumsan.

According to early reports, the new father had just left Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, when he received the daunting call to return to the hospital.

“The father was crying in so much pain while his Palestinian neighbours and friends tried to help him compose himself. As a new father, he must be experiencing so much heartache because their children did not get a chance at life and their days as a family were short-lived,” an analyst and researcher, Dr. Farhin Delawala, explained on VOC’s PM Drive show on Wednesday. UPDATE| “The Israeli Occupation Army continues to close the Rafah border crossing between Palestine and the Arab Republic of Egypt for the 100th consecutive day, after burning, bulldozing, and rendering it out of service. This comes in conjunction with an unprecedented deepening of the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip across all aspects of life.”

Union Federation Cosatu has called for a Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement that decisively addresses unemployment and stimulates South Africa's struggling economy. The country’s official unemployment rate has risen from 32.9% in the first quarter to 33.5% in the second quarter. Cosatu’s Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks, stressed that both the government and the private sector must recognize the severity of the crisis impacting the unemployed and their families.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Mpox a global health emergency, marking a significant escalation in the international response to the ongoing outbreak.

Speaking on VOC’s News Beat show, National Spokesperson for the Department of Health, Foster Mohale confirmed that South Africa has recorded 24 cases of Mpox, including three fatalities.

UPDATE| Former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina has accepted an invitation to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. This comes as Adetshina withdrew from Miss South Africa just days before Mia le Roux was crowned, and will now represent her father's home country at the 31 August final. Home Affairs is currently investigating her mother for alleged identity theft.

UPDATE| The Department of Home Affairs has welcomed the court's decision to deport 95 Libyans arrested in White River, Mpumalanga, last month. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has instructed the Department to expedite the process while following legal protocols. The Department said that its officials are securing the necessary confirmations from the Magistrate to proceed. The minister has emphasised the importance of upholding immigration laws.

UPDATE| Palestinian media reported that the Pentagon has announced that the United States (US) Secretary of State approved a Foreign Military Sale to Israel. According to early reports, the sale includes:

- F-15IA and F-15I+ aircraft for $18.82 billion.
- 120mm tank cartridges for $774.1 million.
- Advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles for an estimated $102.5 million.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas expressed condemnation, saying the US' claims of de-escalation speak differently to its actions.

"The continued US administration financial and military support for the Zionist entity confirms once again that it is a full partner in the war of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and brutal massacres against our Palestinian people," asserted Hamas.

Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais has expressed shock after the case against five men linked to a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Khayelitsha was struck off the court roll.

This comes after 13 men armed with several weapons including an AK 47 gun had allegedly planned to hijack a cash van in Khayelitsha Town Two when a shootout occurred between the suspects and law enforcement killing eight of the robbers on Monday (5th August).

This operation has led to the other five suspects being arrested with three of them appearing in court on Thursday (8 August) while two sustained injuries.

The official statistics on the police force indicate that the number of active South African Police Service (SAPS) members has dropped from 193,297 in 2011 to around 180,000 in 2023.

The mayoral committee member for Finance has emerged as the African National Congress (ANC) top choice for the role, following the resignation of Kabelo Gwamanda under intense pressure from opposition parties and civil society.

A 32-year-old suspect was arrested in Delft yesterday on a charge of drug dealing. According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Operation Restore officers acted on a tip-off about someone dealing in ma*****na.

Police searched an address in Bottle Brush, where they found and confiscated a significant amount of dagga, cash, and a digital scale. Once charged, the suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates' Court.

Bishop Lavis residents are outraged over the brutal murder of a 5-year-old boy, allegedly at the hands of a 40-year-old man who is also the brother of the boy’s nanny. The incident has left the community in shock and anger, with many residents signing a petition to deny the suspect’s bail as they demand justice for the young boy.

A health emergency related to monkey pox has been proclaimed by the Africa Centre for Diseases Control due to a sharp rise in cases throughout the continent. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone, there have been over 13,700 cases and 450 deaths reported since the year's commencement. Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa are among the other African nations where the virus has made its way.

UPDATE| Iran has rejected Western calls to stand down its threat to retaliate against Israel for the killing of Hamas' leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran late last month. The Islamic Republic and its allies hold Israel accountable for Haniyeh's killing during a visit to the Iranian capital for the swearing-in of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israel has not commented. Iran has vowed to avenge the death.

Economic expert Raymond Parsons has called for immediate reforms to tackle the soaring unemployment rate, which has reached 33.5% according to the latest quarterly labour force survey. Parsons highlighted that weak economic growth and disappointing GDP figures underscore the need for urgent structural changes.

He advocated for accelerated reforms to boost job-rich growth, enhance business confidence, and reduce unemployment, especially among the youth, to foster a more sustainable economic future.

A 21-year-old suspect was arrested in Uitsig on Sunday for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, officers patrolling the gang violence hotspot noticed a suspicious man who fled upon seeing them. After a brief chase on foot, the officers apprehended him and found a shotgun in his possession.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a 39-year-old man was arrested in Philippi East for possessing an illicit firearm and ammunition. A high-speed chase ensued after officers spotted a speeding vehicle, ending with the discovery of a 9mm Norinco pistol and ammunition.

Once charged, the suspects will make their respective appearances in the Bellville and Athlone Magistrates’ courts.
