'The Truth Takes a Journalist' campaign launched at a time when readers were looking to connect to The New York Times in a deeper way, outside the daily news cycles that helped us navigate a pandemic and election year. The film takes that small, two-letter word you see on every piece of journalism in The New York Times–by–and fills it with depth, humanity and dimension. It celebrates the unique human beings behind the reporting, bringing us closer to them as humans, and showing how that humanity gives The Times’s journalism great depth, richness and color. The compositional narrative is anchored by the word "by" – as it changes typographically, we're thrown into a new world, connecting viewers to the word, the journalists, and the spaces they occupy. The scenes weave together into a winding emotional journey, showing the complex, turbulent and rewarding relationship journalists have with their journalism, coming together to represent the 1,700 contributors who live to bring us the truth every day. The campaign included a suite of assets targeting younger, curious readers that ran across TV, OLV/OTT, social, digital and OOH.

Sandulela Asanda () is one of the six writers selected to attend the The Realness African Screenwriters Residency

The selected screenwriters will attend the Locarno Film Festival () in Switzerland, followed by 6 weeks at the tranquil Nirox and Farmhouse 58 in The Cradle of Humankind in Jozi, where they will be mentored by Story Consultants Ayanda Halimana () and Mmabatho Kau () and Creative Producer Cait Pansegrouw ().

Over the years the programme has received over 650 submissions from 23 countries in Africa, and mentors have worked with over 30 film projects with 2 films produced as a result - one of which being “This is not a Burial – It’s a Resurrection” (Dir. Lemoghang Jeremiah Mosese), Lesotho’s debut submission for the Awards in 2021.

We couldn’t be more excited!

“As a creative, I want to produce the work that I needed to see when I was growing up, work that changes the status quo of what being black, woman, or q***r is. Through my work, I think I’ve started to hone in on how this looks and feels. For example my favourite piece of work is a short film I did on female ma********on and pleasure. I also turned the Bible story of Moses into a science fiction drama about fertility rights and poverty. I want to be known for taking risks, but more importantly, for expanding the horizons of how our stories are represented on screen.” - Sandulela Asanda
