Fairbourn has been keeping at it since 1977 when the Utah native and Tulane University architecture grad landed in Phoenix. He moved around several architecture firms during his first few years in Arizona, joining architect Eddie Jones (still a great friend and collaborator) at Lescher and Mahoney, then working with architect Robert Fairburn (no relation) at his firm when they started doing projects in Saudi Arabia. “That firm hired anyone who could fog a mirror,” says Fairbourn with a laugh. The arc of Jones Studio’s architecture is traced in a new book, Strive: Jones Studio Adventures in Architecture (Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers) by Marilu Knode, an author and art curator formerly with Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). With a foreword by Marlon Blackwell in collaboration with Jonathan Boelkins, the book includes essays not only about the firm’s award-winning built projects but its roots, inspirations, public art and unbuilt work. At press time, the specific schedule for the February event had not yet been released, but past Modernism Week events put a major emphasis on the work of Southern California architects who helped create Palm Springs’ “look” between the end of World War II and the 1970s. Frey was among these design giants—and his noted experimental aluminum house, “Aluminaire,” was recently relocated from the East Coast to the Palm Springs Art Museum grounds.

In our ninth issue, we profiled the noted Phoenix architect Edward “Ned” Sawyer, who started his career with architect Al Beadle and went on to become a residential and commercial architect focusing on modernist design. It was then I discovered a photo of his first residential project, the Corbus house, an International Style house built into the boulders near Pinnacle Peak. The photos were old and limited, but the building was stunning in composition and architectural structure. Nora Burba Trulsson remembered the house was featured in Phoenix Home & Garden magazine in the early 1980s, but the house had disappeared over the decades. Sourcesfordesign.com
