Flashback: Not Dancing in the Dark – by Art Fettig

Shin: device for finding furniture in the dark. I did better than that the other night. I turned off the lights in reverse order ending up in my office and then I proceeded to head back to our bedroom. I fell on my face and my glasses made a little cut on the bridge of my nose. I didn’t jump up to my feet as if nothing had happened. I lie there a minute or two reflecting on what I had just done. I wasn’t real proud of myself. After all, I have worked somehow in the safety field or on the fringes since 1948 and you would think I should know how to get to bed safely by now. Oh yeah? Never underestimate the ability of man to find a new way to do something in a little stupider manner. Why am I making this confession to you? Just to remind you that whenever you think you can predict the behavior of another fellow human being, LOOK OUT! They will fool you every time. Whenever you introduce changes be certain to stick around and see what happens.

Among My Souvenirs – by Art Fettig
https://newsquill.com/among-my-souvenirs-by-art-fettig/

Years ago, singer Connie Franncis had a hit song with the above title and it was a sad song about a broken heart. Today as I sit at my computer I can swing around in my fine chair and see over fifty eagles on display and they bring me such happy memories. My office is crammed full of wonderful souvenirs and glorious memories. One of the book cases has four shelves of the books I’ve written and a stack of the CD’s containing all of the songs I have written. There is a wall full of plaques and medals and other paraphernalia including a diplomat signed by Dr. Scholl certifying that I was qualified to fit his foot appliances. At one time in my career as a speaker I was known as “Mr. Lucky of the American Platform.” Sometimes I tend to forget just how lucky I have been in my life and how extremely lucky I am today to live in America and enjoy the good life of growing older here in North Carolina.

Sometimes it is a temptation to see a glass of water as half empty instead of half full. We are sometimes tempted to look for the things we have lost instead of those we have gained. I think I will dedicate one day a week as “Count your blessings day.” I will set out to enjoy all that is good and plentiful in my life..the comfort of a warm bed at night, a hot meal, the joy of family and good neighbors and friends…and oh, that blessed joy of souvenirs and memories.

A Quick Fix for America
https://newsquill.com/a-quick-fix-for-america-2/

Pundits, politicians and even President Obama are all saying that getting the economy back on track is going to take a long, long time. This is very depressing and it’s not what the American people want to hear. They want to hear about a quick fix for the current situation – an instant turnaround that will put the economy on a fast track toward recovery today. That’s the kind of news that will get the American people excited about their future.

FLASHBACK: Why Marriage Matters Arizona – Joe and Terry
https://newsquill.com/flashback-why-marriage-matters-arizona-joe-and-terry/

“If I could marry you, I would ask you right now,” Joe Connolly said from across the table to Terry Pochert. The two men exchanged onion rings at that very moment, a silly gesture that meant much more. Despite how much they loved each other, it was 1995, and the thought of same-s*x couples having the freedom to marry was a distant dream. Instead, Terry and Joe made a promise to one another that they would live their lives together in love.

Why Do People Behave Like This? – by Dr. Ross Reck
https://newsquill.com/why-do-people-behave-like-this/

A friend shared the following story with me. “I went to a restaurant to pick up a pizza. Both rooms were full of diners, and the phone was ringing nonstop with take-out orders. The employees were running their legs off, and the guy ahead of me was screaming abusively at the woman behind the cash register because his pizza wasn’t ready. She handled it very professionally, but it was obviously challenging, and frankly a little scary. I could see she was really shaken after he left.” This begs the question: why do people behave like this? It doesn’t make the situation any better because it ruins the day of the person receiving the abusive behavior and puts a serious damper on the day of everyone who observed it. On top of that, the person who engaged in the abusive behavior will be remembered as a classless jerk and someone to be avoided. This abusive person could have made everybody’s day by simply smiling and saying something kind to the person behind the cash register, and he would have been admired by everyone for doing so.

Walt Disney’s CEO has apologized for his “painful silence” on a Florida s*x education bill critics warn will isolate LGBT youth. “You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. I am sorry,” Bob Chapek told employees. His comments come amid internal complaints that “gay affection” is routinely cut from some Disney films.

Why Florida is Sinking into the Dark Ages
https://newsquill.com/why-florida-is-sinking-into-the-dark-ages/

Tuesday’s announcement [February 1, 2023] was foreshadowed in December when the governor’s office asked all state universities to account for all of their spending on programs and initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion or critical race theory.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday that he intends to ban state universities from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in hopes that they will “wither on the vine” without funding.

Playback - by Art Fettig

I was watching the Sweet Eight games this weekend and occasionally when a player scored a field goal they would play back the others outstanding plays that player had made in the game. Swish! Swish! Swish! and the thought came to me, “Enjoy it to its fullest because, young man, that may be as good as life ever gets for you.” I have never played basketball, never made field goal but I thought about the rare times in my life when I really knocked the ball out of the park or scored the winning run. These precious moments came to me in my speaking career. That time at the International Toastmasters Conference in Toronto in 1978 where I had the honor, as a professional speaker to be one of the two keynoters.

Well, I suppose that you have all now heard by now that Guiding Light the CBS soap opera that’s been in existence for 72 years — since 1937 on the radio and 1952 on the television — will air its final episode post-Summer. The Associated Press cites declining daytime ratings and budget as the reason for the show’s demise. If you think you feel bad about what is happening think about the poor ladies and probably gentlemen too who have been following this show for the past 72 years.
