Black history lives on every day of the year and our team was reminded of this during a two-day celebration marking the return of The Black Lens newspaper. January 2022 was never meant to be the final publication of the paper, which was founded by the late Sandy Williams, but with the support of the family and friends, the paper returned earlier this month. On the paper’s enduring legacy, Editor Natasha Hill put it best:
“What the Black Lens represents for this community is so important. It shines a light on Black folks in Spokane, in a region where we are not well-represented, where the mainstream is what we see and hear every single day and we ignore or we don’t get the opportunity to see the beauty and the culture and the art and the contributions of the Black folks in this community—folks who have been here generationally, people who raised their families here, who invested here and they deserve to have the light shine on them. … We are making Black history here in Spokane.”
