This week, as in today, Oct. 9, we will have Robert Dehlinger from the Alpha Rhythm King s live in the studio in advance of their appearance this Sunday as part of the Music InPlace 501c3 music series. Tune into KSVY Sonoma at 4 p.m. on the FM or stream to hear the show live, or grab the pod or vid cast from the website after the show.

"Established in 2017, the Alpha Rhythm Kings have created quite a stir with music fans, having crafted an exciting, King Size California sound, with what roots music magazine No Depression calls "the badge of authenticity".

The “swaggering” (The Washington Post) ensemble, led by Robert Dehlinger's “exhilarating” trumpet and "magnetic" singing (Jazz Corner) are a favorite with audiences in nightclubs, festivals and concert halls.

The A.R.K.'s high-energy vintage vibe has whisked them all over the globe, from the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, to performances in Hungary, Austria, Germany, and back to the USA to play at the Grammy Awards Nominee San Francisco Chapter Celebration.

You may catch the band entertaining at top jazz venues (Yoshi’s in Oakland, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill, Blue Note Napa), nightclubs (Feinstein’s at the Nikko, 54 Below in Manhattan), exclusive private spots (the French Club, University Club of San Francisco), swanky casinos (the Peppermill in Reno, Nevada, Agua Caliente in Palm Springs, the Orleans and Fontainebleau in Las Vegas), top class hotels (the Hay-Adams in Washington, D.C.), large street fairs (San Francisco’s North Beach Festival), and family-friendly theme parks (Disneyland Resort, California’s Great America)

Frontman Robert has entertained crowds at many of the USA's most famous locales, including shows at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night's Swing in Manhattan, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, Pixar Animation Studios, and Disneyland Park in Anaheim, CA.

The Alpha Rhythm Kings' debut recording, "California Boogie", featuring their exciting original arrangement of "Oh Marie", is a "truly happening party record" (Jazz Corner), and one of the "greatest swingin' releases worldwide" (Hey Mister Jesse).

The A.R.K.‘s first full-length offering, “Sharp Dressed Men”, is “a jumping good time of an album” (Midwest Record Blog), and “sharper than a Versace suit” (Jazz Weekly). It was followed up with three singles: “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie (Featuring Tammi Savoy)”, “Vaccinate Me, Baby”, and a rollicking rendition of Louis Prima’s little-known “Baciagaloop”, released in December 2023.

This week, as in today, at 4 p.m. on KSVY Sonoma we will have Ed Johnson, member of Novo tempo who will be playing this Sunday in the plaza as part of the Music InPlace 501c3 concert series. Thus in at 4 p.m. on the FM or hit the pod or video casts later.

"Classical. Brazilian. R&B. Jazz. Afro-Cuban. Popular Rock and Roll. ED JOHNSON’s mastery of so many different styles, coupled with a passion for harmony vocal and horn arrangements, all factor into a magical blend of vibrant, original contemporary jazz that is winning fans and airplay worldwide.

As a vocalist, Ed Johnson is frequently compared to Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks. As a guitarist and bandleader, critics often cite the lushly exotic, accessible sounds of Airto and Flora Purim. Ed has seven recording projects to his credit, in addition to producer’s credits for other singer/songwriters.
Ed tours regularly with his band NOVO TEMPO, which includes: Canadian pianist/singer JENNIFER SCOTT (Tommy Banks, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler, Skywalk, Hugh Fraser), sax and flute maestra KRISTEN STROM (Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Johnny Mathis), trumpet/flugelhorn master JOHN WORLEY (Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Don Byron, Wayne Shorter), guitar/mandolin wizard SCOTT SORKIN (The Count Basie Orchestra, Mary Wilson, Nneenna Feelon, Paula West), Canadian bass star RENE WORST (Chet Baker,Gene Bertoncini, Joe Pass), drummers MARK IVESTER (Larry Coryell, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Byrd, Eartha Kitt), and JASON LEWIS (Boz Scaggs, Michael Brook, Djivan Gasparyan), and percussionists MICHAELLE GOERLITZ (Mark Levine, Wayne Wallace, Houston Pearson) and JEFF BUSCH (Carlos Cascante, Jovino Santos Neto, Patrinell Wright).

With this ensemble, Ed has released three critically acclaimed Brazilian jazz albums to date, including his latest album, For Every Living Thing, out now on Cumulus Records. He is a co-founder of the California Coast Music Camp and perennial faculty member there, and also on the teaching staff annually at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. He also records and performs with the Americana/folk ensemble Cabin Fever Northwest, and has produced their last three albums.

This Week! We are back live in the studio with Little Worth on Wednesday, Sept 18 at 4 p.m. on KSVY Sonoma. Tune in live on the FM or stream or catch the podcast and videocast after.

"Little Worth was born of a chance introduction between two songwriters - Tanner Walle and Austin Ferreira. As Austin grabbed a guitar off the wall during a doggy playdate in El Verano, the two realized just how remarkably similar their tastes and skills aligned.

Then came a pandemic, and the two used the unfortunate quarantine to hunker down together in Tanner's garage, where they would write well over two dozen songs over the course of several months, with a weekly Tuesday night session and lots of pacing with a notepad.

Soon Austin and Tanner would cultivate a team of brilliant Northern Californian musicians including bassist Brad Maestas, drummer Ben Tinsley, pianist Jesse Adams and pedal steelist Josh Yenne. "They may not be diary entries per se, but these songs are wholeheartedly inspired by the experiences and love of growing up in California," Ferreira says.

Their finished collection of songs and debut album "First Annual" was recorded at famed Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, and produced by five-time Grammy winner Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Philip Glass, Beck). "These songs stick like honey on sandpaper," says Castillo
Supreme magical guidance was supplied by co-producer Brian Cullman, who's late-night stories as a lifelong songwriter and rock journalist in the West Village have helped guide Walle and Ferreira throughout the process.

'First Annual' will be the first release on Ferreira and Walle's new Sonoma-based label LITTLE WORTH RECORDS."

Musician friends in Sonoma Valley, East Petaluma, Napa and North Marin. If there was an affordable rehearsal space rental available in the south Valley, would you use it?

And what is "affordable?"

How much for a one off rental for X amount of hours?

How much for one hour?

How much for a specific day or days each week for a month?

How much for a solid week at a time?

An opportunity has come up and trying to get a feel for if it's a "thing". We have never had this in the Valley as far as I can remember, and many acts have garages and living rooms they practice in now, for free. Is having a space to go to worth more than free?

Please address the questions above in comments.. if you have more specific questions that require a conversation, DM me.

Thx

Friends. I have an ask, of you. I have been blessed with many friends and followers here, over 4,000. I need 1% of you, yes.. 1%, or 400 of you to please, if you can, donate $25 one-time to the local community radio KSVY Sonoma. That would hit my goal of raising 10K to help keep the operations going and funded. Of course you could donate more .. or less.. If 500 of you, or a little over 1% of you, donated $20, that would hit the goal too. There are no prizes or giveaways, just our gratitude (oh.. and we are a certified 501c3 so you can write it off). I will be posting this every day for a week in some format or another, but don't wait a week. Lets Rock and Roll on this!!

Today! On the big show we will be live in the studio with Frank Guiles, a guitarist and composer based in Petaluma. Frank and I go way back but there's things I don't know about his musical history as well. Tune in live on the FM at KSVY Sonoma at 4 p.m. or catch the podcast or videocast episode after.

"Frank Guiles is a guitarist, writer and arranger who has been playing music since the age of 4and has played a variety of instruments having played in his school orchestra and later the California State Jazz Band. Music has been a big part of his life since birth and he has a musical heritage with classically trained musicians from the San Francisco Conservatory, Julliard and the Berklee Schools. His inspiration in rock music started with the Beatles, Hendrix, Zeppelin and the Who and quickly adapted to the European styles from the likes of Dio, Sabbath, Ozzy, Maiden, Queen, UFO Genesis and ELP."

This week, as in Today on the big show we have Todd Jenkins from the Hunka Hula R***e to talk about their upcoming CD release and shows. Tune in at 4 p.m. on the FM KSVY Sonoma or stream it online, or if you miss it, grab the podcast by going to the KSVY.org site and going to my show page and linking to all the pod and videocasts.

"Sailing in from the golden shores of Northern California comes the wild ukulele sounds of Hunka Hunka Hula R***e.

Featuring lead singer & songwriter Todd “Troublemaker” Jenkins armed with a paddle, beer and a baritone ukulele. His crew of misfits include Carissa Noelle on lead/backup vocals and tenor ukulele, Alan K. Parks on upright bass, lead/backup vocals and foot rubs and last but not least is Mark Larson on lap steel, electric guitar, lead/backup vocals and sunscreen applicator.

From rockabilly, country, blues, swing and all with a tropical twang hillbilly hula flare. This band has what it takes to get the room buzzing and the people dancing. They’ve had the distinct pleasure sharing bills with bands like Southern Culture On The Skids, Deke Dickerson, Rosie Flores, Jinx Jones, Soraia and many others. So make sure you hop on the Hunka Hunka Hula R***e wave when it comes thru your town! "

Musician friends. Let me tell you a story. Many of you know I've been doing this whole "performing musician" thing for over 40 years, and for the first 35 or so I never ever cleaned my instruments. Changed the strings religiously but unless it was so dirty that you stuck to it, I did nothing, and if I did it was Lemon Pledge. Then about 10 years ago, Rand Rognlien started a new local Sonoma company called MusicNomad Equipment Care and started using me as a product tester. I started using the products and cleaned my fret boards, polished all the metal and used the One spray on my instrument bodies. I became an addict. This stuff is so good if I didn't use it before a show, it felt like I left the house with no pants on. And I know this isn't possible, but I swear the instruments feel lighter after they are clean and shiny. And they don't just have things for guitars, but products for drums, cymbals, wind instruments, acoustic instruments and a whole new set of tools to maintain and work on your instruments along with stuff I don't even know about.

They will have a presence at the Sonoma Farmers Market tomorrow, Tuesday July 16 so swing on by and say hi and try some of their stuff and support a local business. Music Nomad also sponsors many music events in town at the Sonoma Community Center and more. The invite says to RSVP but I'm betting if you just swung by that would be fine.

This week we are live in the studio again for an appearance by The Big O, Oscar Mooneyhan on Wednesday, June 19 at 4 p.m. on KSVY Sonoma. Catch it live at 91.3 on the FM or stream it or check out the app ( You have it right?) If you miss it you can grab the podcast and videocast after the show at my show page on ksvy.org.

"Raised in Sonoma Valley, Oscar Mooneyhan (the Big O) started his first band Blue Smoke with friend Mike Hinton take the Battle of the Bands as just teenagers in 1968, beating out many older and borderline profesional acts. Later he formed Bacchus in 1969 with lifelong friend Joe Scoma who is the only surviving original member bedsides himself in the revised act that playes Sonoma Valley today. He then spent 30 years in Reno and played all over the town with a successful show band called Back in Time. Mooneyhan moved back home to Sonoma in 2004 formed a couple of pretty successful acts, like Backtax and Rubber Soul. His musical career has gone ful circle, so to speak, by bringing back the new Bacchus Rock Band. Mooneyhan also has a power duo with James Marshall Berry called JMB and the Big O. "
