Looking to strengthen your students' understanding of fractions? Check out these thought-provoking questions from our math textbook series!
This is an introduction to the concept of fractions for Grade 3 students.
They see the illustration of a tape that is divided into three equal pieces and learn that each piece is called “one third.”
They then apply the same idea to the illustration of a tape divided into four equal pieces to get “one fourth” and be able to explain the concept of fractions in their own words.
These types of questions not only test math skills, but also require students to think critically and communicate their reasoning. Incorporating questions like these into your curriculum can help develop well-rounded mathematicians.

Problem solving in mathematics means that students persevere in figuring out how to solve problems for which they have not been taught how to solve. In addition to facilitating the acquisition of conceptual understanding of mathematics, learning through problem solving is known to strengthen cognitive skills such as memory, attention, and executive functioning.
For decades, many elementary schools in Japan have been teaching math classes that incorporate problem solving. Students are not initially taught how to solve the problem, but are encouraged to recall existing relevant knowledge and to think persistently. Several group and whole class discussions follow. Finally, teacher facilitation carefully reviews the thinking process and focuses on key knowledge and concepts.
It is this kind of sophisticated instructional methodology that is behind the high performance of Japanese students on international achievement tests such as PISA.

As the results of PISA 2022 show, Japan's elementary math scores are among the highest in the world.
What is driving this result?
Japanese teachers have spent decades developing problem-solving skills combined with a deep conceptual understanding of each mathematical topic, and this is to a large extent the same direction as the PISA requirement for mathematical literacy.

A distinctive approach in Japanese mathematics classes is to encourage students to actively participate in discussions about how to solve problems. This is, so to speak, cooperative problem-solving. Students first come up with their own solutions, then exchange ideas in small groups and then as a whole class. The teacher facilitates the discussion and encourages students to focus on common and different points among the ideas. This approach provides students with not only a conceptual understanding of mathematics but also the importance of mathematical argumentation and the skill of critically examining the ideas of others.

Graphs are essential for organizing various types of data!
Of course, it is possible to rely on computers to create graphs, but it is important for students who are learning about the characteristics of graphs to practice drawing them accurately by themselves.
Our Hogan Notebook contains two sets of grid lines, one solid at the 10mm mark and one dashed at the 5mm mark. Grid lines can be used as a guideline to draw graphs. Each grid line can be used as a hatch mark and each square can be filled in to form a bar.
Organized graphs will make it easier for the students and the teachers to identify and select necessary information quickly without making mistakes.

The first step in learning geometry is to accurately identify the characteristics of various shapes!
The key to this is to be able to draw them well.
Our Hogan Notebook contains two sets of grid lines, one solid at the 10mm mark and one dashed at the 5mm mark, which make it easier to draw shapes. Students just need to trace the notebook to draw straight lines with right angles. You can even see how long each of the lines is based on the number of grids used. 45-degree angles can also be easily made by diagonally cutting the grids in half.
3-D cubes and geometry nets are easier to draw using the grids, which leads to a deeper understanding of 2-D to 3-D conversion.

Do you know an excellent way to avoid mistakes when calculating large numbers on a notebook?
The way to do that is to just write the calculation in an organized manner, paying attention to the place value.
It is common for students to make mistakes from unorganized calculations and not lining up their place values properly. However, by writing one number per grid in our Hogan Notebook, which contains two sets of grid lines, one solid at the 10mm mark and one dashed at the 5mm mark, it is easier to organize the place values. Hogan Notebook will ensure that students will not make miscalculations due to unorganized handwriting. #

Addition with carrying is one of the biggest challenges for students in the first grade. But our Math Block Set makes it easy to overcome!
How do you calculate 9 + 4? The best method here is the make-10 strategy.
(1) To make 10, split 4 into 1 and 3.
(2) Add 1 to 9 and make 10.
(3) 10 and 3 make 13.
Students actually manipulate the blocks as this is explained. This allows students to visually understand the calculation procedure and why it works. #

Want to improve your students' calculation skills? Our Math Block Set is the best training tool for students who are learning addition and subtraction for the first time!
Take 10 math blocks in a clear case. Partially pull out the blocks out of the case and have students figure out how many are hidden inside the case by looking at the ones that are pulled out. If 4 blocks are pulled out, can students immediately answer "6"?
This game is an exercise in answering instantly which two numbers make numbers up to 10, especially 10. A solid knowledge of number composition greatly improves the speed and accuracy of addition and subtraction.

The best gift for children who are learning mathematics for the first time! Our Math Block Set is the perfect tool to help young children smoothly learn the number concepts.
Can all the birds in the picture get a birdhouse? Of course we can easily compare the birds and the birdhouses by replacing them with numbers, but young children cannot. They solve this problem by replacing the birds with white blocks and the birdhouses with yellow blocks, aligning them and visually comparing them. In this way they learn that a group of concrete objects, whatever they may be, can be replaced by more abstract objects, and even more abstract "numbers". This is an extremely important realisation at the starting point of learning mathematics.
