A thoughtful review from Michael D. Meloan just arrived.
In "Golf Is Ruining My Life," my longtime friend Brooks Roddan muses about golf and country, good shots and bad shots, cheating, whisky, women, and the existential abyss.
The backbone of the book features Socratic questioning with his buddy Jack, an amalgamation of myriad golf partners. In these dialogues they tackle many of life’s “big questions.” For instance, why did that innocent nearby coot have to die when Roddan topped a powerful tee shot and struck the bird. He mourned the death, and a wasted shot—the score was always looming.
During a visit to the San Francisco Museum of Art, Roddan became enthralled by a collage by German Dadaist artist/poet Kurt Schwitters. He imagined what a round of golf would be like with this man who fled the N***s for Norway and England, experiencing monumental torments and upheavals, yet remained committed to the zeitgeist of an artistic life as a kind of salvation
"Golf Is Ruining My Life" is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to observe. It is beautifully rendered with an eclectic mix of vintage photographs and art.
