Oakland Unified School District #OUSD decided to close, shrink, or merge 11 schools by 2024. Most of the schools that are closing disproportionately serve Black, Latino, and special education students.
The Parkland Community School - formerly known as Parker Elementary - is reclaiming the space as a place for community learning for children. Volunteers are dedicating their summer days to teaching art, history, math, and much more.
“The community has the power, and that’s why we’re here.” - Steve, volunteer with Parkland Community School

🚨COMMUNITY. This is an emergency. We have reason to believe the Proposition H is gaining ground – the regressive, fear mongering rhetoric is speaking to conservative and liberal communities across SF and they are hearing it.
WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO VOTE NO ON H. Fill out your ballot today or vote in-person June 7 and stand up for our communities plagued by police violence, profiling and wrongful arrest.
Please share and spread the word. This is a fight we can win if we SPEAK UP AND VOTE🚨

🌵Every year, SFMOMA’s @RawMaterialPodcast works with a new podcaster-in-residence to produce a season all their own. East Oakland historian and radio producer Babette Thomas @blackradiohoe takes the mic this year, with a season called Visions of Black Futurity. In Episode 2, Babette visits a museum with no walls. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art collection artists Cauleen Smith and Noah Purifoy are featured as Babette wanders Purifoy’s outdoor desert museum✨
Purifoy tells us what led him to the desert and Cauleen Smith creates a Black, feminist utopia in the spaces he built. Even our dreams have rhythm, let’s go together, moving through time + space — funkin' to the beat of “One.” Tune in to Visions of Black Futurity wherever you listen to podcasts!
