The combination of dogs and photography has renewed his enthusiasm for the arts and given him a renewed sense of purpose.

After being connected with Paws for Purple Hearts through a community event, he began to use his talents to spread awareness for the organization and the positive impact that dedicated service dogs, pets, and emotional support animals can have on an individuals’ health and wellbeing. “I’m excited to announce an upcoming portrait series for the newest class of 13 dogs preparing to graduate from the Paws for Purple Hearts program, featuring individual frames done in the style of German photographer Christian Vieler along with shots featuring the amazing trainers and staff supporting this mission.”

The Monster of my Mind
poet Sefra V Schwab
San Antonio, Texas

*TRIGGER WARNING*
[Themes of sexual assault, abuse, su***de, PTSD.]

“the hardest
battle i’ve ever fought
is
the one constantly raging
in my mind.
the fight against the memory
of
his hands,
the ones that grabbed my body,
but bruised my heart
and soul.

“YOU CAN’T LET THAT GET TO YOU”
people tell me. they mean it to be helpful.

“JUST LET IT GO, IT HAPPENS TO MOST PEOPLE.”
their words echo through my ears as a shout in a canyon.

These people don’t wake at 4 in the morning soaked with sweat, smelling the fear on their body,
fighting with their own mind
to stop the
PANIC
weighing
down
their
every breath
trying to quelch the screams rising
from their stomach...”

Sefra has shared a most vulnerable and visceral glimpse into her experience as a survivor in Vol. 2, no. 5–dropping soon.

A tribute
author & poet K. Day Gomez

“How do you sum up a life
that has set so many others in motion
—that before their conception would change the course
of every reality
against all odds and the powers that be?

How do we crown our modern saints,
laud and raise and name them
when their armor is a common man’s clothes,
a pen and microphone their sword,
and their martyrdom cheapened by newspaper ink and public disregard…”
— .kday

Any American reference book will read you the same premise... “DR. Martin Luther King, Jr. (born January 15, 1929, died April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.” We know the story. But have we ever taken a moment to understand the human being buried beneath the legend and the indelible imprint he has left on who WE are now?

This is the question we ask in this issue’s Icon installment.
Coming in Vol. 2, no. 5.

cover artist.

Marlene Jorgē
Austin, Texas

For the cover of our 5th issue in Volume 2 of PEPPER Magazine, the soft theme for which is “FLIP THE SCRIPT”

Our cover icon had to be none other than Mexican artist, activist and social reformist, Frida Kahlo—and was our top choice for the perfect artist to capture her likeness.

“Neurodivergent Dominican American artist Marlene Jorgē is a pop surrealist living in Austin, Texas. An avid painter since age 5, Jorge’s mediums have expanded into airbrushing and digital painting over time.

Existing within the creative sector as an individual on the spectrum comes with a unique set of issues. Marlene shares, “as a neurodivergent artist navigating today’s dynamic art industry, l’ve encountered various challenges and sought out specific forms of support to empower my creative journey. Tailored support, inclusive environments, and effective communication have been instrumental in enabling me to fully realize my artistic potential in this unique landscape.

I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support I have received from understanding galleries, insightful publications like yours, nurturing mentors, and empathetic friends and family. These pillars of support have played a crucial role in shaping my artistic growth, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to the galleries that have provided me with opportunities to showcase my work, the publications that have featured my art, and the mentors and friends whose guidance and encouragement have been invaluable…”

Find her vibrant, empowered feminine work in Vol. 2, no. 5—dropping soon!
