Shady Pines Radio is looking for a few new DJ’s! We’re a volunteer run nonprofit online community radio station here in Portland. We have an awesome mobile app for iOS/Android/macOS, and we can be played on any smart device.

We are looking for a few new DJ’s who are interested in hosting weekly live radio shows from home. We have nearly 100 DJ’s on the team right now, mostly local to the Portland area, doing all kinds of shows. SPR is home to a wide variety of musical taste, with an eye toward more obscure and non-mainstream selections.

We’re specifically looking to add some eclectic world jazz, as well as more Americana/jazz/blues music. There’s also some room for some punk/hip hop/rock/indie/soul/funk and more!

Bonus points if you want to spotlight independent Portland and PNW music. If you want to do a show primarily focusing on local music, we’d especially love to talk to you. Interviews and live performances are great too.

For the past 2 years our main focus in life has been Shady Pines Radio. Brian and Callie have been building it, training DJ's, throwing live events, developing the app, fundraising, building the website, making zines, designing merch, getting the word out, and more. It's been a labor of love in the truest sense. All that work, along with the support of our friends, has resulted in Shady Pines Radio being NOMINATED for BEST RADIO STATION in Willamette Week's Best of Portland 2022 Reader's Poll. We have some sad news…. We recently learned is closing down permanently this week. This marks the end of our monthly Cruzin’ in the Pines live showcase & broadcast, and we have to cancel the planned May 14 show. 😞 Shady Pines Media has grown so much with Cruzroom Annex over the past few years. We’ve hosted countless events there, and they’ve always been huge supporters of what we’re doing, offering us their wonderful space to showcase local talent. Our biweekly Cruzroom Open Mic was thriving for 2 whole years before the pandemic shutdown in March 2020. As soon as things started opening up again last summer, they invited to host a new monthly event there, Cruzin’ in the Pines, which has been an absolute blast. We’re really sad to say goodbye.

Tomorrow’s their last day before they shut their doors forever. We’ll be there enjoying the final and enjoying one last hoorah in this very special place. Feel free to join us if you‘d like to raise a glass to the Cruzroom. Wishing all the best to the Cruzroom team on their next adventures. Thank you for your years of support, helping Shady Pines thrive over the past few years, and providing such a great space for local creative folks. ❤️

2021 has been quite a year for Shady Pines Radio. We surpassed 80 shows on our schedule, with over 100 DJ’s involved. We grew our listenership a lot. We raised over $6K during our first ever February Fun Raiser. We created a bunch of new swag with art by some incredibly talented illustrators like Chad Eaton, uyo66, Mr. Squeeksy, Ramin Nazer, Storie Grubb and Taylor Rushing (stay tuned for that one). We made a zine. We got sponsorships & support from some incredibly cool local companies like Sticker Ninja, Groove Family Records, and Fire on the Mountain—who released a freakin’ Shady Pines Radio IPA! We hosted our first in-person events at venues like Cruzroom Annex, Kenton Club, and Big Legrowlski. We got a bunch of new support on Patreon (THANK YOU!) We got some great press from Vortex Magazine, Radio dot co, Brewpublic, and The Oregonian. We built a street team of SPR enthusiasts in Portland and beyond (THANK YOU!) We started a phone hotline: 220-SPRADIO. We blew right past our goal of 3K followers on Instagram. We developed a HUGE update to our mobile app (keep your eyes peeled in January!) We had on air appearances by some big names like Pete Bernhard (The Devil Makes Three), Claude Coleman Jr. & Dean Ween (Wee), Steve Coomes & Janet Weiss (Quasi), Courtney Taylor-Taylor (The Dandy Warhols), Chris Ballew (The Presidents of the USA), Neil Hamburger, Olivia Hack (“Hey Arnold,” “Avatar: The Last Airbender”), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Phil Everum (The Microphones & Mount Eerie).

We are humbled and thrilled by all of your support this year, and it will be our fuel going into 2022. We have big plans, and we’re looking forward to some good-ass times, filled with some good-ass music. Happy New Year, y’all! See ya next year. ❤️💥📻🎶

An atmospheric river has been raining down on the west coast. That reminded me about this video we shot last year for a little ditty I wrote called "River in the Sky."
