“Before the break, I wrote a Beacon opinion article informing our university about the progress made thus far in the effort to add gender identity to the nondiscrimination policy. To recap, ASUP passed a resolution formally recommending that the administration provide institutional protections by explicitly adding gender identity to the university’s anti-discrimination statement. However, after more than a year of advocacy, student leaders were not provided with clear steps forward, and there was no plan to implement this addition. In response, ASUP and GSP began organizing plans for a demonstration, as discussed in the previous article. Now, after further discussions with President Kelly, I am happy to provide an update on our progress.”

““I like all kinds of music — as long as it’s not country.”

I would say this every time someone asked me what kind of music I liked to listen to. Truthfully, I never even gave country a chance. With the genre having a majority white artist demographic, the lack of representation made it unappealing to me.

However, I think 2024 was a defining year, one that indicates a potential shift in country’s demographics. The current No. 1 slot for Billboard’s Hot Country Songs has been held by Black country singer Shaboozey. His song “A Bar Song (Tipsey)” has held the slot for 22 consecutive weeks.”

“Young people are disillusioned with the current political system in the U.S. I voted in my first federal election this past November, a rite of passage that should be filled with excitement.

Yet, I didn’t do so enthusiastically, and I’m not alone.

Across the country, young people are exhausted by business-as-usual politics. Underwhelming candidates don’t speak to the issues we care most about. We are frustrated with the influence money has on American politics and feel alienated from the messages politicians share.”

“What is the point of soccer? Is it to hold possession of the ball? Is it to not let the other team score? Is it to play fancy one-touch tiki-taka all the time?

No, I believe it is to score goals. Goals come from everywhere on the pitch. Defenders can score goals, wingers can score goals and midfielders can score goals, but no one scores more goals than a traditional striker.“

“This year, Beacon reporters talked to students about how their identity impacts their experience on campus, witnessed protests, documented the effects of institutional changes and highlighted students’ accomplishments. At the forefront of UP history are those who have the opportunity to witness it firsthand. We have the privilege of being among those select few as student journalists.

The Beacon’s Editorial Board reflected on the work of staff, both past and present, and selected the articles we think made the most impact on campus this year.”

“Wellness is a big topic online. When I open up TikTok — all the time, without shame — I’m inundated with videos of women in Set Active apparel, wielding ice face rollers and pilates memberships, pedaling a better life. From the clean-girl aesthetic to the million-step everything shower to the right’s fascination with raw milk, these trends, however different from each other they may seem, all make it into the “wellness” venn diagram.

I’ve admittedly fallen for the hype, too. At any given time, you can catch me walking around campus wearing my Oura ring with my hair slicked back, talking about my new protein powder that tastes like lemonade. But these trademark trends of online wellness culture, though seemingly innocent, are all troubling in their own way, necessitating a return to the basics that actually make a difference.”

“The way you view yourself can have a direct impact on your confidence and self esteem. I fully believe in the importance of having a positive image of yourself. As a photographer I have seen how a good photo can influence a person’s view of themself.

These days, almost everyone has a camera in their pocket at all times. We are seeing photos of ourselves more often than we ever have before. Most of these photos are quick 0.5mm forehead shots or candid moments with friends. “

“In a society driven by capitalism, where validation often hinges on achieving milestones, climbing career ladders and adhering to expected life paths, it can initially feel demoralizing when your journey doesn’t align with these predetermined norms. What society does not tell you is that life isn’t a linear trajectory — there’s no singular path to success or fulfillment.

As high-achieving students, we’re conditioned to excel academically and receive external validation for our efforts, whether through familial praise, social acknowledgment or letter grades. You prove your worth, reap the rewards and repeat the cycle in a structured system that offers clear expectations.“

“I don’t often divulge where my parents come from. But when I do tell people where my parents are from, and specifically my mom, many people don’t react, though not because my mom’s hometown is unknown — in fact, it is extremely well known within Mexico.”
