"You have to let go of your grips to progress.
If you don't let go, you stay stuck.

Jiu-jitsu is about progress.

This isn't just about Jiu-jitsu.

It's life."

Boundaries with friends and family can be really challenging during. Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It's the most wonderful time of the year but coordinating and planning gatherings and events can be really stressful.

Especially in marriage and new relationships family traditions and the way we've always done things can clash.

Here's some phrases to try on to say no, set limits, collaborate and coordinate with your loved ones.

"She's here. And I am here.

But we are not here together.

For many years the sofa has served mostly as a place for the draping of lighty soiled garments.

Though I've been sleeping on it for six months.

The sofa makes a fine bed if you're looking to ponder your profound disregrets while herniating a disc.

I bought a weighted blanket, thinking this would help, because sleeplessness is always more fun when you feel like you're  trapped under rubble.

Will I ever again share a soft bed with my wife?"

Tired of disconnected top down leadership, life-sucking micromanagement, inefficient bureaucracy policy and systems?

Check out this book, book of the month in 's Read To Lead Community

Sadly I'm missing the live book club featuring the authors today!
But it's an inspiring and thought provoking read.
Especially coming out of the pandemic and the new realities of remote work and fluid and rapidly changing teams and technology.

This week I interviewed on her exploration of Oregon's Black Exclusion Act and the story of Jacob Vanderpool the only man to be expelled from the state for being Black.
It brought her on a surprising journey back through her own family tree and their connection to Vanderpool.

I think her book is courageous and compassionate.
I learned a lot and it makes me hopeful for the healing and reconciliation that is happening and still needs to happen.

This podcast episode went all over the place, in a good way!
I enjoy talking with authentic people who have been through stuff and are willing to share their experiences and the lessons that they've learned. Even if it's been the hard way.
Maybe especially because of that.

Thanks

My guest this week on The Courage, Coaching & Counseling Podcast is Jake Anderson.
We had a wide-ranging conversation about the challenges he's been through that I know a lot of guys and gals in their 20's and 30's experience.
We hadn't talked in a while so there was a lot of life to catch up on.
A little bit about Jake:
"I’m a singer-songwriter, DJ, and fitness fanatic based out of Redding, CA. I’ve spent the latter part of my 20’s and early 30’s working on emotional health and stabilizing my life. I like to tell my story through the songs I write and I enjoy seeing people connect with them. In my free time, I enjoy movies, reading, and hanging with my friends."

One of my favorite things about being a therapist is helping struggling adults become more childlike, on one hand, and helping children/young adults mature into adults, on the other.

It is both freeing and a lot of fun!

We often hear the phrase "You are a human being, not a human doing."

Fact is, a lot of people could improve their lives by being empowered, equipped and encouraged to do more.
On whatever difference in the world God is calling them to make.

(This is also a Jiu-Jitsu post. Come train with me! 😀)

The latest episode is a tool to use to have a conversation with your spouse or partner about distractions that are affecting your relationship.
And ways to practice self-care, set healthy limits, support and encourage each other.
I used this at two Connect Together events for couples at Imago Dei Central and Eastside Imago Dei Community recently.
We’re planning on doing another event at Central May 19th, 2023.

After a four-week pause, The Courage, Coaching & Counseling Podcast is back tonight at 8pm PST.

Aaron J. Smith is my guest for episode 55 of The Courage, Coaching and Counseling Podcast.

We talk about him growing up Christian in Utah, living with undiagnosed bipolar disorder II, experiencing church hurt, and how he made the decision to get help.
We discuss how starting therapy can bring up grief, his writing about mental illness since 2007, emotional health impacts spiritual health, marriage and family, being a part of an Anglican church, and his thoughts on a spirituality of being human and suffering as part of the human condition.

Aaron J. Smith is a father, writer, nerd, and coffee drinker. He hates writing about himself. It’s the worst. Aaron is deeply drawn to theology and liturgy, believing that a spirituality of being human is what religion should strive for. He also likes cookies. Aaron lives just outside of Portland, OR with his wife, two boys, dog, and cat. He has been featured on several prominent websites and published anthologies.

We had some mic issues on this interview (especially between 21:00 and 27:20) but we resolved it.
