In June, LA28 announced its plans to stage all canoe slalom events in Oklahoma City during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Oklahoma City must become the home of the best canoe slalom fans in the world. The next ten days of canoe slalom coverage from the Paris Olympics provide our training opportunity!

So what is canoe slalom?

Canoe slalom is a sport encompassing six gold medals at the Paris Olympics.

In Paris, there are 82 athletes competing. Events occur for ten straight days, beginning today and ending Monday, August 5th.

Canoe slalom debuted at the Munich Olympics in 1972 and became permanent in 1992. The kayak cross events within canoe slalom are making their debut this year in Paris.

The six events of canoe slalom are below. Note that the last date listed for each event is the day the finals will be contested and medals will be awarded. I have listed the events in order of their start date. All events have multiple rounds.

Women’s Kayak Single: This event involves a kayak, where a competitor is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle. Single female competitors race individually down a whitewater course. Fastest time wins. They must pass through about two dozen gates in order. Competitors go downstream through green gates and must come back around and paddle upstream through red gates. Touching a gate adds a two-second penalty, and that happens often. Missing a gate entirely would be a 50-second penalty. This event is being contested July 27 and 28.

Men’s Canoe Single: This event involves a canoe, where a competitor is on their knees and uses a single-blade paddle. Single male competitors race individually down a whitewater course. Fastest time wins. They must pass through about two dozen gates in order. Competitors go downstream through green gates and must come back around and paddle upstream through red gates. Touching a gate adds a two-second penalty, and that happens often. Missing a gate entirely would be a 50-second penalty. This event is being contested July 27 and 29.

They drop from a ramp and pass through gates along the course, but they can touch a gate without penalty. Competitors complete one 360-degree kayak roll during the race. Winners are determined by order of finish. This event is being contested August 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Women’s Kayak Cross: This event involves a kayak, where a competitor is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle. In this event, four female single paddlers race against each other simultaneously. They drop from a ramp and pass through gates along the course, but they can touch a gate without penalty. Competitors complete one 360-degree kayak roll during the race. Winners are determined by order of finish. This event is being contested August 2, 3, 4 and 5.
