Today is the very last stage shoot that will take place at Garman Productions (at least in its current iteration, under our name). It's fitting that it's with some great old friends and clients. Our family did our best to get everything ready, although I'm sure we forgot many things that Steve always did. Emily put out the signs to block the driveway and salted the icy sidewalk. Lynn and Carrie cleaned the building, got the dressing room ready for talent and makeup, and made sure the stage was lit, ready and warm on this 19 degree February day. The only thing we can't figure out is the coffee maker, because Steve was the only coffee drinker around here.

I think Steve would be really proud of us, getting his place looking top-notch, and doing whatever we can to make sure clients feel at home and have what they need. Just like he always did.

We are so sad to have to announce that Steve Garman died suddenly of a heart attack on February 3, 2021. He and his wife, Lynn, opened Garman Productions in 1981 and our company has been serving the Oklahoma City community and beyond since then.

Over that 40-year period we’ve produced thousands of radio and TV commercials, industrial & training videos, and a myriad of other audio and video-related projects. We’ve made it possible for families to see and hear treasured home movies and slides, converted from obsolete formats. We’ve been part of the careers of dozens of employees, some of whom became like family. It has been a pleasure and honor to serve the businesses of Oklahoma City, and be part of the advertising community here. We know Steve touched so many lives, and appreciate the love and kindness of those who have already reached out with their condolences.

However you knew Steve—from Northwest Classen High School, OU radio days, AdClub, or Producer’s Sound Studio, Producer’s Audio/Video, Garman Audio/Video or Garman Productions—you were lucky. He was unfailingly kind, had impeccable integrity and professionalism, and always did whatever was necessary to do the right thing for a client. Generous with his time and advice, he could often be found sharing ideas with wet-behind-the-ears interns and veterans of the industry alike. He and Lynn were just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary, and he simply adored her, never neglecting to acknowledge the critical role she played in the enduring success of their business.

We will be holding an open house celebration of Steve’s life on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at our offices at 2828 NW 58th Street in Oklahoma City, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please drop by during that time to share a story or memory of Steve. We’ll have a camera running on stage and a notebook if you’d prefer to write. We’ll also be showing some old video tours of our past locations and personnel, and of Steve throughout his career. We’d love to see you and reminisce; masks are required.

** With Steve’s passing, Garman Productions will not continue operations. We aren’t sure what the future holds right now, but we are not accepting any sessions, work or projects, effective immediately. If you have questions about an existing project, invoice or need help, contact us at [email protected] and we’ll help you as soon as we can.

Sincerely,

The Garman Family

Our guest in the audio suite for most of the day today was Cedric Pendleton, a talented actor who is in town working on a new movie "For The Love of Money." He was at our studio doing radio and TV voice over for Church's Chicken and promotions for their new white meat Texas Tenders combined with butterfly shrimp. Sounds good, doesn't it! Well, don't look for it quite yet, but soon! We are glad to have Cedric here in our state for both the new movie and the Texas Tenders!

We were thrilled yesterday to have Kristin Chenoweth, an Oklahoma and National Treasure, on our stage for a green screen project and a second shoot against our black curtain, shot by videographer extraordinaire, David Callahan.

Kristin was accompanied by her boyfriend, Jason Bryant, on guitar. They are delightful people to work with and we were sharing everything with individuals across the country who sat in on the two projects, virtually, via Zoom. What a treat to have this Talented Oklahoman working in Oklahoma and at Garman Productions!

Here's the way we're doing movie transfers today to insure they will have a long future for your families memories. We capture them digitally, trimming off any unwanted stuff from the heads and tails of whatever format you bring us. Then we output them as digital files in the .mp4 format. No generation loss because they went directly to digital as they were captured. Then we put the .mp4 files on a thumb drive. In this case (client's name removed) there were 24 movies, in different formats, but they all are digital .MP4's now and all are on the thumb drive. We put the drive in a labeled plastic case so you can keep track of it easily. The movies will play on any Mac, or any Windows computer, and on most TV and DVD players that have a USB port. This is how you should be saving your precious memories. We'll help you do that at Garman Productions, LLC Call us 405-254-2500. Don't delay!

Although it's a little less than a year from it's official opening in Oklahoma City, The First American Museum is preparing full speed ahead. David Tester, of 1755 Productions, was in our facility last Saturday shooting and directing a group of singers and dancers who were performing Native American songs for a video that will be played in the museum.

We've been told we have the nicest green screen stage in town. All you need to bring is your camera. The lights, boom mic, and 4k monitor are already here and set up. And we have really reasonable rates for 3 hr. and full day shoots. Lynn is working hard getting it all ready for your next shoot. Give us a call. We're easy to find and to get to from almost anywhere.

TBT. We're all watching a lot more TV these days thanks to Covid19. Unfortunately we are heading into the summer season with very few new episodes available. Two suggestions for re-watching a couple of our favorites. The West Wing. Super drama and all 7 seasons are available for free. We binged on that last summer. This summer we just finished all 34 episodes of Smash. Well produced and worthy of executive producer Steven Spielberg. Lynn and I love musicals, especially with great singing, dancing and staging. Smash has them all in spades, and again, all episodes are free for the watching. Enjoy!

I've been receiving many fake invoices in my email lately. You're always curious when someone sends you an invoice and it's natural to want to investigate and see what it's all about...but don't. The latest ones look really good and say they are password protected, but that's just a way to get you to respond. If you type in the supposed password, you're in essence saying, "Come on in. Do whatever you want here on my computer." You've just given them an open invitation for ransomware.
Before you even open this so called invoice, look at the email address of who sent it. You don't have to open it to see the email address from the sender. If you don't recognize the sender's email as someone you've done business with, don't go any further with it. Just delete it and go on about your day. One little peek at the fake invoice may mean that everything on your computer will now be frozen and they will want you to pay big bucks to get it back. Don't ever do that, BTW. They will haunt you forever and just do it again. Please! Don't be curious about any emails or invoices you don't know. Just delete them!

TBT. Who has the least hair? When actor Ed Harris was here, it was he who suggested a picture of us together but he wanted to put on his hat. I said, "Hey, you've got more hair than I do and I'm not wearing a hat." He agreed and didn't wear his hat.

Ed was here at Garman Productions doing Home Depot commercial voice overs for the Richards Group in Dallas.

Ed isn't from Oklahoma but he did spend a year here at the University of Oklahoma Drama School. His favorite professor got fired at the end of the year and so Ed decided to leave, too.

Does anybody remember Camelot at the Jewel Box Theater here with Ed Harris starring as King Arthur? It happened, according to Ed.

Update; Ed has taken over the roll of Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, from Jeff Daniels who opened the Aaron Sorkin adaptation of the play last year. Richard Thomas will play Atticus in the national touring company which launches next year.

Keeping up with the latest software is one of the fun parts of my work. I started with this audio software back in the 80's when it was called Sound Tools and ran on a Mac Quadra 950. Boy, that computer was a horse!. Then it became Pro Tools and even though the current version is labeled "Ultimate" I doubt that it is through growing and improving. It's just something you have to stay up with and using it in sessions for real people with real projects is how you do that.

I've been doing that for over three decades now and will continue to upgrade and learn as I help people solve their audio and video communications problems. If you're not one of them, I hope you will be soon.

Armed with simple tools like an electrostatic camel hair brush, an electric air blower and photoshop software, Lynn has become an expert at preserving slides, photos and even scrapbook memories for many of our clients. "It's one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your children and grandchildren," Lynn says. And with the holidays coming, it's the perfect time to drag those old photos and slides out of the closet and get them to Lynn before they deteriorate any further.

She can remove fingerprints and those strange dark things hovering in what would otherwise be a beautiful blue sky. Even slides or pictures that have faded or discolored with age can be restored to the beautiful colors they once were so they can be treasured by generations to come.

Several clients have even used our light box here at the studio to do some advance screening of their precious slides to cull out those they don't need to have restored. These could be duplicates or four or five different angles of the same subject that you really don't need or want in your restored final collection. There's no charge for you to do that. Just call and make sure we have a space for you to work. That's also a good time for Lynn to give you a quick demonstration of the magic she can perform on these old keepsakes.

Don't dally! You're not getting any younger and neither are your slides and photos; so get it done now. Your younger relatives will be thankful and you'll be remembered fondly!

We were pleased to have Dr. John Schumann, President of O.U. Tulsa in our studio this week. He was conducting an interview with Dr. Jennifer Gunter in California via Skype. She is a gynecologist/obstetrician, best selling author and a specialist in women's pain medicine. She corrects misconceptions about women's health through her books, newspaper column and online interviews.

Dr, Schumann is featuring her on an upcoming "Medical Monday" on KWGS, the NPR station in Tulsa at 89.5 FM. He has been here before when he was the subject of an NPR interview.

Podcasts are a great way to spread the word about your company both to potential clients and even for your own company members to get to know each other better. We've been doing that lately with Jennifer Eve Fish who is marketing director for Check Six, based out of Oklahoma. We've had guests from all over the world participate via Skype for Business as well as here in our audio studios. In the Photo, Jennifer is interviewing Brian "Bru" Brurud, founder and CEO of Check Six. You can check out any of the dozen or so podcasts we've helped them produce at Check-6 Unplugged.

I've had my new mixer for 2 months now and am perfectly at home with it, especially since I wired it all in. It's a Soundcraft GB-4, named for its designer, Graham Blyth, (he's British, you know) and his new 20-input board is exceeding my expectations. We are busy recording podcasts, doing ADR sessions and connecting with other studios via ISDN, Source Connect and Skype for Business. I've been using this technology for years but it just keeps getting better and better. I love it!

Excited about the Sooners' first home football game this Sunday! I embed the closed captioning and quality check this show before I send it on to channel 9 for air. I'm starting my third season for helping on this weekly sports show. In the late fall and early spring the subject changes to the OKC Thunder. Lots of fun!

We loved meeting and having an ADR session with actress Betsy Sodaro, who is in our state making a new movie called "Golden Arm." The story, now filming in Oklahoma, focuses on a tough lady trucker who trains her girly best friend to compete in the National Ladies Arm Wrestling Championship.
Luckily for us, she used her day off yesterday to come in and do ADR for her featured role of "Patty" in an upcoming episode of Bob's Burgers. She told me she absolutely loves Oklahoma City and is having a ball here. Let's all keep super people like Betsy coming back to our fair City!

Enjoyed having Oklahoma actor Ryan Merriman in last Friday for ADR work on his latest movie, "Christmas Movie Christmas." It's all about people who obsessively watch
Christmas movies at Christmas time.

Not sure when it will be released, but with this much of a head start, it could certainly be by this Christmas. I worked with Ryan when he was a teenager and now he has an 11 month old kiddo himself. Glad to see him getting a lot of work and hope that continues; he's one of the good guys!

When you see something really meaningful, you want to tell your friends about it. That's the case for "Children of Hope," a locally produced documentary about Oklahoma children whose parents are incarcerated. The 48-minute video was produced by Norman veterinarian John Otto and Oscar winner Gray Frederickson. It is heart wrenching to watch, but gives kids with parents in prison a platform to share their long-term pain and the repercussions of having a mom or dad behind bars. It's honest and genuine and you need to see it. OETA will air the documentary at 7pm on Thursday and 8 pm on Saturday. Garman Productions played a small part in the production by doing the closed captioning for the program.

LA Talent Josh Casaubon was booked in for three days last week doing national spots for Dodge-Chrysler via Source Connect. Josh has had the Chrysler account for 7 years now. He also is the narrator for a series called "Homicide Hunter" and did a session here for that series as well. Josh is showing Lynn the castle like home he and his wife Stephanie just bought in France. They'll be moving there with their two young girls this summer. We'll miss seeing him but we're glad his VO career has been rewarding enough to make this move possible.

What a fun Holiday we just had. I finally completed a complete conversion of our audio/Video production facility to LED lights. I had done the outside lights and the inside downlights and tiny MR16 spots and floods a year ago. All I had left were the flourescent troffers throughout the offices, workshop, engineering and the stage. I pulled out 78 Ballasts (I hope they will recycle) and put in 156 LED, 4ft tubes that I direct wired, because they don't need any ballasts-the AC goes directly to the bulb sockets or tombstones as they are called. So, on each bulb I've gone from 32 watts to 12 watts, plus the heat (ballasts) is gone needed to produce that 32 watts for the old tubes. I'm hoping to see a big difference in my electric bill over time.

It's the first day of a two-day photo shoot for Toni Brattin and her marvelous wigs at Garman Productions. Every area of concern is covered by Toni and her husband Tom Casso. Ace photographer Simon Hurst manages the setup for success and literally thousands of photos are snapped then evaluated on the spot for Toni's marketing efforts in the coming season. It may seem like a three-ring circus at times but everyone involved has a fabulous time.
