The African and the Mexican ❤️ ***nga

For the past couple of months, I’ve shared with you all my trip to Yanga, Veracruz, Mexico, the first Black settlement of the Americas. I’ve been assisting in the promotion of the town and its rich African history. The fight between the enslaved Africans (Gaspar Yanga and his crew) and the Spaniards was a successful slave uprising! As a result of the Spaniards losing, the town of Yanga was founded Oct 3, 1631 (Oct 3rd is my birthday.) I don’t think I’ve had one conversation with anyone and haven’t mention what I’ve learned. I’ve been on this journey to learn more about myself through the journeys of my ancestors. I’m very interested in interviewing and visiting individuals of African descent in other countries. Mexico has 3 states that have people of African descent: Gurrerro, Oaxaca, and Veracruz. I’ve gotten to 2. There are over 2.5 Million Mexicans that identify as Afro Mexican. A lot of Mexicans weren’t taught about their African heritage. Mexico’s 2nd President Vicente Guerrero was Black. The colonizers did a number on Mexicans as well. I’ve also visited Cartagena, Colombia where they look just like us but speak Spanish. Brazil has the 2nd largest population of people of African descent (Afro Brazilian) outside of Nigeria.
