Our latest edition features two beloved Newberrians...

Meet Eddie and Cindy Long, a lovely family whose journey to being approachable, kind, compassionate business owners embodies the essence of making a difference in our local community.

Their story began on the stage of the Ritz Theater in 2005, where they portrayed a married couple in the play "You Can't Take it with You." Little did they know that their on-stage roles would manifest into a real-life partnership. Cindy states, “God was probably laughing and saying…little do you know...you will be married soon! And sure enough, our acting role became our real-life role 1 year and 2 months after those first words were spoken. We married May 13, 2006 so are celebrating 18 years together.” Today, their pursuit of each other is unmatched. A rare bond beautifully woven together.

With backgrounds in media arts and business administration, Eddie and Cindy seamlessly blended their skills and passions, embarking on a journey of service together. From their early years working in the ministry of Young Life to their pivotal encounter with the End It Movement, which opened their eyes to the prevalence of modern-day slavery, the Longs have been on a mission to make a difference. “After learning that many of the products we consume on a daily basis actually contribute to modern-day slavery, we felt called to do more to “End It.” God began teaching us about Fair Trade, a system that seeks to ensure there is no slave labor in supply chains while paying fair wages to farmers and reinvesting in their communities and the environment,” continued Eddie, “along with some friends, we began dreaming about a fair trade business that educates our community about modern-day slavery and enables them to combat it with their purchases. In 2018 we opened up our first business together in downtown Newberry entitled Genesis Hub.” Now in 2024, Genesis is planning to open a second location in Whitmire!

For leisure, one of their favorite activities is going to the beach with an umbrella and a good book. They relax by reading most of the day and then playing some Bocce on the beach. Eddie enjoys playing Disc Golf with friends and has been playing for over 20 years. Eddie mountain bikes in Lynches Woods!

Highly educated as you’d expect, Cindy Graduated from Newberry College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Eddie Graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor in Media Arts. Through Genesis Hub, they not only educate their community about the realities of modern-day slavery but also empower individuals to combat it through conscious consumerism.

Their commitment to fair trade principles ensures that every purchase made supports ethical practices, fair wages, and community development. “It's been awesome to see God use this business to educate people and use this little town to make a big global impact,” said Eddie.

Beyond their business endeavors, Eddie and Cindy are deeply involved in the community. Whether it's participating in local events like Oktoberfest and Community Movie Nights or supporting initiatives for public service workers and veterans, the Longs exemplify the spirit of giving back.

Their family extends beyond human connections to their cherished fur babies, Sophie and Sadie, who bring joy and laughter into their lives.

Sophie is 9 years old and is a Maltese and Westie White Terrier Mix. She was adopted from Canine Rescue at 8 weeks old (rescued from a puppy mill) in North Augusta.

As a true Southerner, Sophie has a couple of different names. Cindy calls her “Sophie Sue,” and Eddie gave her the name “Sophie the Warrior Princess.” They laugh and say she must have misunderstood and thought it was Sophie the Worrier Princess - because she worries and is afraid of so many things. “If you change something in a room, for example - turn on a projector light, she worries. Thunder, lighting, children, other dogs (besides her sister), and beeping noises make her very nervous. But then, things she should be scared of, like moving cars - she is not afraid! Sophie is a Daddy's girl,” explained Cindy.

Sadie is 8 years old and is a Maltese. She was also adopted as a puppy from Canine Rescue in North Augusta. Cindy calls her “Sadie Mae,” and Eddie gave her the name “Sadie the Spirit Warrior.” Sadie is a Mommy's girl and is the opposite of Sophie when it comes to worrying over changes or something new. Sadie is more relaxed and wants to have fun and play with her squeaky toys - no matter if it's thundering outside or not.... (as long as her Mommy is around, that is… Sadie also communicates with her eyes, letting you know (and staring you down) until you understand what she is trying to say.

They are very passionate about their faith. They agree, “Social media and news media often portray America as very divided and politically polarized. We don't have to follow that trajectory. Jesus shows us how to love our neighbor well, and he defines our neighbor as EVERYONE, even our enemies. We live in a small town that outsiders find very friendly and inviting. Keep loving each other in that radical way as we move into a divisive political season. We can be a city on a hill that brings light and love to all who visit!”

As they navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and community engagement, Eddie and Cindy find solace in simple pleasures like walking their dogs, playing games, and spending quality time with family.

Where kindness and compassion are invaluable currencies, Eddie and Cindy Long constantly push for better, reminding us all that kindness, generosity, and ethical living can truly change the world, one community at a time.

It's Not Silly... Glossy Magazines are Effective for Local Ads

1. Targeted Audience

Glossy magazines often have a well-defined readership. Local magazines, in particular, cater to specific demographics within a community or region, ensuring that advertisements reach a relevant audience. This targeted approach is appealing to local businesses looking to maximize the impact of their advertising budget.

2. High-Quality Presentation

The high production values of glossy magazines, with their vivid colors and sharp images, lend an air of sophistication and quality to advertisements. This quality presentation can enhance the perceived value of the products or services being advertised, which is particularly beneficial for luxury or premium brands.

3. Local Content and Engagement

Local glossy magazines typically focus on community news, events, and stories that are of direct interest to the local population. This local focus means that readers are more engaged and spend more time reading the magazine, increasing the likelihood that they will notice and respond to advertisements.

4. Long Shelf Life

Unlike many other forms of media, magazines often have a long shelf life. Readers might keep them on coffee tables, in waiting rooms, or in their homes for weeks or months, allowing for repeated exposure to advertisements. This extended exposure can significantly enhance brand recall and recognition.

5. Credibility and Trust

Magazines, especially those that are well-regarded within a community, often carry a level of credibility and trust. Ads placed within such magazines can benefit from this trust, as readers may view the advertised businesses as reputable and trustworthy by association.

6. Tangible Experience

The physical nature of magazines provides a tangible experience that digital ads cannot replicate. The act of flipping through a magazine can create a more memorable interaction with advertisements, making the marketing message more impactful.

7. Local Networking Opportunities

Local magazines often collaborate with local businesses, providing opportunities for cross-promotion and community involvement. Advertisers can benefit from participating in events, sponsoring content, or being featured in articles, further increasing their visibility and engagement within the local community.

8. Complimentary to Digital Marketing

While digital marketing is crucial, combining it with print advertising in local glossy magazines can create a comprehensive marketing strategy. Print ads can drive traffic to a business’s website or social media pages, creating a synergy that enhances overall marketing efforts.

9. Exclusive Local Offers

Local businesses can use glossy magazines to offer exclusive promotions or coupons, driving immediate traffic to their stores or websites. This can be especially effective for businesses aiming to attract a local customer base.

Originally known as Decoration Day, this holiday originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. And some records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried there.

Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor the dead on separate days until after World War I.

Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date General Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

The Newberry Museum proudly announces the creation of its Botanical Garden which will be dedicated on May 21st. Developed in partnership with the Nosegay Garden Club of Newberry. this installation was designed to expand the current temporary exhibit entitled “The Toll of War” by showcasing medicinal plants whose properties were utilized during the mid-1800’s.

“The Toll of War” is a traveling exhibit from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland. The exhibit explores both the physical and emotional effects of the war on those who lived through it. The motto of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine is “divided by conflict, united by compassion,” in reference to how doctors, both Northern and Southern, struggled to aid the wounded, and often shared information across the battle lines to help aid the injured.

The Newberry Museum has supplemented the traveling exhibit with our local story. The Museum’s portion includes direct connections to Newberry County and Newberry College through the lives of local surgeons and the medical advances made by Dr. J. Julian Chisolm, whose service included time at Newberry College when the College was a hospital during the final days of the War. Artifacts, including surgical instruments, and a reconstructed field hospital visually illustrate conditions vastly different from today’s sterile operating room.

New outdoor furnishings and a fountain complete the garden and have transformed the Courtyard space into a welcoming public space which will serve as an outdoor classroom and venue for expanded educational programming. The Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers of The Newberry Museum are grateful to the Garden Club and to the generous benefactor and supports who have all served to make this expansion possible. The seed was planted, and the vision grew.

The Newberry Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that serves to protect, preserve, present, and promote the ongoing history and heritage of Newberry County and College.
